Just wondering what everyone thinks about what might happen between tate and Devin a few years down the road? Tate seems like he is going to be a pretty soild qb for us but Devin is looking real strong right now.I wonder if the thought is to redshirt Devin or take the chance have having a new qb for the 3rd straight season.
Tate and Devin
They were that band in the early '80s that sang "Whip it" you know they wore the upside down looking planters for hats.
A: We are Devo.
also a pornstar, FWIW. look it up.
i had to
Call me crazy but I think he means Devin. Just a thought though.
If Denard does happen to turn into a Pat White, maybe Tate and Devin will be fighting for back-up QB.
Who knows...but it will be fun to watch.
I think a lot will depend on how Forcier plays this season. If he looks really good, I would hope that DG redshirts. If Forcier (and Robinson) looks overmatched, then the competition should be wide open.
Pretty much this, except I think Devin competes for the job regardless because that's just how RichRod runs the program.
While there is something to be said for loyalty, I have no doubt in my mind that RichRod is going to play the QB he thinks gives us the best chance of winning. If that means Tate goes to the bench after a productive first year...so be it.
I trust RR, and i have no doubt that he's going to be looking out for both the long and short term interests of the program
P.S. please ammend the title/text of this post as not to offend those who follow recruiting extreamely closley.
I know what your were going for, but sometimes people on these boards can get a little "firey" when it comes to spelling, grammar, and knowing your stuff.
I agree with what Brian said a while ago--the plan is Forcier for four years, while Devin redshirts and sits for two more years, percolating, learning, and growing. I can't imagine Devin unseating Forcier as a true Freshman if Forcier has had a full year plus a semester in the system, and I don't think RR would waste a year for Gardner. Of course, that leaves Denard out of the equation entirely. He could change the whole schedule, especially if he takes significant time away from Tate this year, so neither one has a full season of experience playing.
This is only tangentially related, but I was thinking the other day that if DG redshirts, his senior season won't be until 2014! I can't plan lunch tomorrow, but we know who our QB will most likely be 5 years in the future. Crazy.
Try to be a little bit realistic.
There's no way DG sticks around for a 5th year after his Heisman.
sorry about the devon not devin lol. I agree with Rich Rod going with the best player whoever it is. I just wonder if Denard will be willing to move to wr if he is past up. He is too talented to keep off the field.
No, who was that poster a while back that always said "lol" after like everything he said? He had the Seastrunk sig...the future... You sound like him.
I think both Tate and DG can be great but don't overlook Denard just yet. Everything i've read and heard about him seems to be very positive. He's not just a running QB, the kid can throw the ball too.
On what you mean by a "few years".
You seem to imply that RR might even put DG in as a freshman next year?
Usually, playing a freshman QB more or less = death (in case you haven't noticed)
Tate will probably start this fall ONLY because he was such a polished QB coming out of high school (and QBForce school) and enrolled early. It's still not 100% he will start.
I would expect to see DG redshirt, THEN COMPETE for the job the next year.
RR has said time and time again he plays no favorites, and wants 2-3 guys he can win with.
That next year DG would be competing with Tate, Denard, Jones, and whatever hot new freshman QBs have arrived.
Nothing is certain.
I wholly agree. None of the quarterbacks mentioned has played a single D-1 snap (though admittedly Tate looked impressive against our 2nd/3rd stringers). Everyone is awesome coming out of HS, but who really knows how 18-year olds will react in a college environment. At this time last year, we were all drooling over TRob dream shake and no one was even mentioning Roundtree. Post-spring game, this has already changed dramatically (not to say this can't change again).
Having 2-3 (good) QBs is critical. This offense is demanding on the QB and they take more hits with the rushing attempts.
Look at Oregon and WVU-- two teams with National Championship hopes lost with a QB injury. Michigan is doing well to have a stocked depth chart... we won't be rebuilding, we'll be reloading.
My expectation is that they all see significant playing time if they rise to the occasion. Opposing D's have to plan for two or three options at QB-- this is an option offense in more ways than one.
I'd agree with what others have said here, RS his freshman year and then probably junk playing time combined with the possibility of a few trick plays here and there during his sophomore year. After that he may have a chance to beat out the others, but its unlikely before then.
Are they loose?
All 3 will be starting & take every snap together. It's gonna be f'd up like a soup sandwich out there for the Defenses to cover.
Speaking of sandwiches, check out my e-blog!
Remember too, any one of them could go down with a big injury in this offense. That would open the door for other guys to start. A lot could happen in 3-4 years time, and most coaches admit you need three QBs that can start in this system. RR had one while he was at WestVa, and he missed a National Championship game by one game. Imagine having three, with a 4th/last resort option in a few years of Cornelius. It's very promising.
"Remember too, any one of them could go down with a big injury in this offense."
Didn't you know? It's a proven fact that spread QB's get hurt more than pocket passers. IIRC, Henne was NEVER injured. Not even once.
Pocket passers still get injured, but since they are supposed to be kept away from defenders, I would bet that they can play more injured than a running QB. I have no idea how Henne played some of the games in 2007, but I would be even more shocked to see Pat White running right into traffic with an arm that's been stapled on.
I will display my special powers of clairvoyance regarding what will happen with Tate, Devin, & Denard only after the topic is discussed 100 times. Thus, only three more threads to go and you will all know the future.
I think it's very possible that Tate gets beat out by Gardner at some point and ends up transferring. Remember, both of his brothers transferred as well.
Ideal situation: Successful Forcier era followed by two killer years of DG.
I've thought of that possibility too. I sure hope he wouldn't leave if that were to happen. I hope his professed love for Michigan would keep him in Ann Arbor. It's unfortunate that their is less loyalty (in both directions)than there was in the "old days."
... the player that gives us the best chance of winning will be the player who plays. Shocking, I know.
it will open up Coach Rod's play book. It will allow each of them to polish their specfic roles for that certain play. This will most certainly give each player a chance showcase their skills as well as give opposing defenses a nightmare to deal with. When players compete, it brings out their best and with the likes of Denard,Devin and Tate the stage is being set for an exciting time for Michigan Fans.
play one fucking game before we speculate? Nah.
Devon rooolz, Tate is da suxxoor lol!
There is no room for logic, moron.
NO, what is going to happen is that there won't every be a running back in the backfield. Just 2 or 3 QB's. They are all mobile and would be servicable running backs. Tate woudl be the "main" QB. I am willing to put money on both Tate and Denard being in the backfield together at least once this season. Throw in gallon and it's a package. I'll put 5 bucks on them running it against Western at the start of the third quater if it with 7 points.
Assuming Tate, Denard, and Gardner all blossom into the terrors they're destined to be, why not run two QB or even three QB sets as a standard part of the offense? I'm imagining Denard set up as a RB or slot, DG as a freaking TE even, but through devious trickeration they take pitches, double pitches, drop bombs and hasten the Rapture. I'm sure this is a bad idea for some reason, but what that reason is sucks.
Edit: should have read that last post. I'll take my lumps for that.
Robinson is then used as as special package QB. He still would see a bunch of playing time just not as much as Forcier. Gardner comes in and redshirts. He starts after Forcier leaves giving him 2-3 years as a starter himself.
