Tate and Devin

Just wondering what everyone thinks about what might happen between tate and Devin a few years down the road? Tate seems like he is going to be a pretty soild qb for us but Devin is looking real strong right now.I wonder if the thought is to redshirt Devin or take the chance have having a new qb for the 3rd straight season.

I agree with what Brian said a while ago--the plan is Forcier for four years, while Devin redshirts and sits for two more years, percolating, learning, and growing. I can't imagine Devin unseating Forcier as a true Freshman if Forcier has had a full year plus a semester in the system, and I don't think RR would waste a year for Gardner. Of course, that leaves Denard out of the equation entirely. He could change the whole schedule, especially if he takes significant time away from Tate this year, so neither one has a full season of experience playing.

This is only tangentially related, but I was thinking the other day that if DG redshirts, his senior season won't be until 2014! I can't plan lunch tomorrow, but we know who our QB will most likely be 5 years in the future. Crazy.

On what you mean by a "few years".
You seem to imply that RR might even put DG in as a freshman next year?
Highly doubtful.
Usually, playing a freshman QB more or less = death (in case you haven't noticed)
Tate will probably start this fall ONLY because he was such a polished QB coming out of high school (and QBForce school) and enrolled early. It's still not 100% he will start.

I would expect to see DG redshirt, THEN COMPETE for the job the next year.
RR has said time and time again he plays no favorites, and wants 2-3 guys he can win with.
That next year DG would be competing with Tate, Denard, Jones, and whatever hot new freshman QBs have arrived.
Nothing is certain.

I wholly agree. None of the quarterbacks mentioned has played a single D-1 snap (though admittedly Tate looked impressive against our 2nd/3rd stringers). Everyone is awesome coming out of HS, but who really knows how 18-year olds will react in a college environment. At this time last year, we were all drooling over TRob dream shake and no one was even mentioning Roundtree. Post-spring game, this has already changed dramatically (not to say this can't change again).

Look at Oregon and WVU-- two teams with National Championship hopes lost with a QB injury. Michigan is doing well to have a stocked depth chart... we won't be rebuilding, we'll be reloading.
My expectation is that they all see significant playing time if they rise to the occasion. Opposing D's have to plan for two or three options at QB-- this is an option offense in more ways than one.

Remember too, any one of them could go down with a big injury in this offense. That would open the door for other guys to start. A lot could happen in 3-4 years time, and most coaches admit you need three QBs that can start in this system. RR had one while he was at WestVa, and he missed a National Championship game by one game. Imagine having three, with a 4th/last resort option in a few years of Cornelius. It's very promising.

Didn't you know? It's a proven fact that spread QB's get hurt more than pocket passers. IIRC, Henne was NEVER injured. Not even once.

Pocket passers still get injured, but since they are supposed to be kept away from defenders, I would bet that they can play more injured than a running QB. I have no idea how Henne played some of the games in 2007, but I would be even more shocked to see Pat White running right into traffic with an arm that's been stapled on.

I think it's very possible that Tate gets beat out by Gardner at some point and ends up transferring. Remember, both of his brothers transferred as well.

Ideal situation: Successful Forcier era followed by two killer years of DG.

I've thought of that possibility too. I sure hope he wouldn't leave if that were to happen. I hope his professed love for Michigan would keep him in Ann Arbor. It's unfortunate that their is less loyalty (in both directions)than there was in the "old days."

it will open up Coach Rod's play book. It will allow each of them to polish their specfic roles for that certain play. This will most certainly give each player a chance showcase their skills as well as give opposing defenses a nightmare to deal with. When players compete, it brings out their best and with the likes of Denard,Devin and Tate the stage is being set for an exciting time for Michigan Fans.

NO, what is going to happen is that there won't every be a running back in the backfield. Just 2 or 3 QB's. They are all mobile and would be servicable running backs. Tate woudl be the "main" QB. I am willing to put money on both Tate and Denard being in the backfield together at least once this season. Throw in gallon and it's a package. I'll put 5 bucks on them running it against Western at the start of the third quater if it with 7 points.

Assuming Tate, Denard, and Gardner all blossom into the terrors they're destined to be, why not run two QB or even three QB sets as a standard part of the offense? I'm imagining Denard set up as a RB or slot, DG as a freaking TE even, but through devious trickeration they take pitches, double pitches, drop bombs and hasten the Rapture. I'm sure this is a bad idea for some reason, but what that reason is sucks.

Edit: should have read that last post. I'll take my lumps for that.

Robinson is then used as as special package QB. He still would see a bunch of playing time just not as much as Forcier. Gardner comes in and redshirts. He starts after Forcier leaves giving him 2-3 years as a starter himself.
