Steven Threet to Transfer Comment Count

Brian

Hi. I'm back, and tired, and it's 3:30 AM but I've already slept seven hours today so, like, hi.

The Daily has confirmed the rampant internet rumor that Steven Threet was planning on a transfer:

"I have decided to transfer from the University of Michigan," Threet wrote in the statement. "I have requested and received my release. I do not yet know where I will continue my collegiate career, and have no further comment until that decision is made."

This is obviously not good for anything except my prediction that Tate Forcier would be the opening-day starter. For all Threet's faults he looked competent at times last year and could have been passable as a sophomore; Michigan is basically down to the two freshmen and then it's time to close your eyes, pick a walk-on, and pray.

So, yeah. Hooray for good news immediately upon returning.

The loss of depth at a critical position is huge. The only experienced QB UM has now is Sheridan and I don't think any of us really want to see him on the field. Considering how much pounding a QB can take in this offense, and the fact that Forcier isn't that big, it wouldn't be that surprising to me that he might miss time this year due to injury (whether that's a few series in a game, a good amount of a game or a complete game(s) I don't know). Not to mention, should Forcier struggle early there is no experienced back up to put in. RR would be forced to put in another unproven, inexperienced freshmen in Robinson.

...that Threet saw the writing on the wall in early workouts? Maybe Tate intimidated him out of A2. I hope so. That being said, I'd take 4 years with Forcier/Robinson over 3 with Threet. Other successful UM QBs who played their freshman years at least had flashes of promise during those years (see Henson, Navarre, Henne). I would not lump Threet into that group.

Navarre did well against two miserable teams (Miami and Rice), then preceded to go: 8/28 for 111 yards (if memory serves, he didn't complete a 2nd half pass) against UCLA 4/11 for 31 yards vs. Illinoi before being replaced by Henson. Drew Henson freshman AND sophomore years were worse than Threet's last year.

Can that be right that Henson's FR & SO yrs were worse than Threet's? I thought Brian reviewed all past QB's and found that Henson was (surprisingly) the best of the bunch statistically in terms of QB rating, TD/INT, long pass completions, etc even though he had limited playing time. I doubt one good year could overcome two bad ones for that to be true.

got slammed behind the O line, slammed by fans, media and commentators, slammed by RR after each play. Whether he stays or goes he gets slammed. I've never seen a QB b#tched at by a head coach as much as Threet after each 4 and out. He's probably getting ignored now, as Tate reports he spends 2-3 hours a day with QB coach studying play book or running plays.

Which is important to note because it shows you can win with a less than average QB if you have a great supporting cast. Heres hoping the supporting cast makes great strides in the offseason.

and I had football as my #1 priority, then I would've transferred too. It's certainly not good news, but I don't think it's bad news either. It's just...news, and it really should not surprise anyone. Face it, Michigan's spread is not the right fit for him. And the sooner we shed the pieces that don't fit, the sooner we're going to figure the puzzle out and gel as a team.

Maybe I'm not recalling the timing correctly, but didn't Threet come in to essentially ride the pine and back up Ryan Mallet for 3-4 years? If so, he wasn't coming to Michigan to be a 4-year starter, that opportunity kind of fell into his lap. More likely he was planning a possible 1-year starting gig in his 5th season. Guess he's had a pretty serious change in mindset. Of course, the new offense and terrible O-line probably helped change that mindset, but still... this is a departure from the expectations when he came in.

that he thought that he could beat out Mallet, potentially and if not, start for his 5th year, or if Mallet was really good, start when he went to the NFL after his junior year. Since he's from nearby, he may have even knew that Mallet wasn't a good fit at M and was having problems, and decided that Loeffler could teach him to be the next Tom Brady. He probably feels like he has no shot with RR and his spread O.

Right - so if he thought that he could beat Mallett, why would he be inherently afraid of a significantly less-heralded QB in Forcier? Either because: a) family reasons we're unaware of b) he doesn't want to run the spread c) he doesn't like the coaches

what's going to happen if D-Rob *does* beat out Forcier for the starting job? I know this entire time that Tate has been a consummate team player in interviews, but there has to be some concern if he can't beat out Robinson for the job. This sets a dangerous precedent. McGuffie, Threet, Mallett, etc. transferring because something's not right. I mean, judging by how it looks, I think we might have a 4-year QB battle on our hands, D-Rob and Tate battling it out in the spring each year. This entire time, Tate has sort of been the Golden Boy. I'm just concerned that he's not going to feel as loved if he's beaten out.
