Spring Roster Tea Leaves Comment Count

The Spring 2011 football roster has been posted on the mother ship. I don't know how I missed this before, but it includes a 2009 walk-on RB named "Jihad" (joking about this can't possibly end well). He is for real. He is the Next Barry Sanders (HS video) He's from Detroit Southeastern, so we can guess walking on at M wasn't his HS coach's idea.

Other information to be gleaned from the roster isn't as entertaining, but might be useful. Some of it already seems outdated so I won't trouble you too long, but since the roster was down for a month and then reappeared with changes and Greg Brown listed, I figured it was legit enough to play with.

NOTE: I removed my section on player weights. Apparently the Athletic Dept. just posted a bunch of freshman weights instead of, you know, the actual size of our players. No: the football team didn't shrink. I am profoundly sorry.

Things of special note that could mean everything or nothing:

  • Mike Williams is on the roster.
  • Furman is a redshirt freshman (I thought I saw him in at some point but don't quote me on that). He's listed as a safety.
  • Other erstwhile SAMwise Spinners of SLBiness listed as safeties: both Gordons, Carvin J, M-Rob.
  • Gardner is listed as a true sophomore. Don't panic yet.
  • Slot receiver is still separate on roster from WR. Odoms, 'Tree, Grady, T-Rob, Dileo and Gallon listed there.
  • New walk-ons: QB Steve Wilson (Jr*), RB Jihad Rasheed (Fr*), OL Joey Burzynski (Fr*), TE Mike Kwiatkowski (Jr*), S Charlie Zeller (So*)
  • Greg Brown is listed as a cornerback (not a safety). He will wear #35
  • Steve Watson is listed as a DE still, and Will Campbell's still on there as an OL. Trust that this is outdated info.
  • Walk-on # changes: slot receiver Jordan Barpal from 10 to 35, DT Alex Schwab from 68 to 60
  • Tom Pomarico still exists, will be Long Snapper again. Isn't he 30 by now?
  • Ricardo Miller is a WR (not a TE) and wearing No. 80 instead of 82. Hey guys, remember when that other guy who wore 80 switched to…
  • 1 is open.

That name could be a poor iteration of the common Arabic name usually spelled Gehad or Jehad, which has nothing to do with a holy war.

If Steve Watson really is a TE now like it's being reported, he will be a BIG TE.  This roster lists him at 268, which also might be outdated.  He might not catch a pass all year, but having him in there on running downs will be like having another OL.  And a 2 TE set with him and Koger would be a lot of beef on the line.

Maybe Borges will run a little wing-T.

Sure, it was worthless.  And sure, we don't have any clue what to make of ANY of this.

But, it is football content, blessed content.

Can't wait until March 19 so that we can start getting REAL bs info about how everyone on the team looks huger, leaner, faster and stronger than ever and how [INSERT DECENTLY HYPED UNDER PERFORMER] looks like he is ready to take the leap forward.

Obviously the usual caveat that all this speculation is BS applies; however is it just me or does it seem like a lot of guys lost rather significant amounts of weight? Espcially guys that if anything need to gain weight.

With the changes in the strength and conditioning staff, it's entirely possible that we have somebody else weighing them. In turn this may mean that they do something slightly differently that changes the measured weights slightly. For instance, maybe the new staff is weighing them after practice when they're less hydrated, and the old staff weighed them before practice when they had more water weight.

Alternately, the new staff may have a different philosophy about stating weights (i.e., the new staff does not inflate reported player weights as much as the old staff did).

I dug into this with such excitement to see how much weight (newly minted 3-Tech) Big Will had lost. Wait... gained? I know it's not much, but I was hoping he and Ash would be the "biggest losers".

I'm actually happy to see Furman at safety. At 6'2 and around 210 with his speed he could be an intimidating beast back there in the secondary. It's a little scary to think about his coverage skills considering he was a LB in high school but I have faith the coaches will do their thing with him, he could be on monster in run support though.

Which is why I said could be in front of both of those words instead of will be. I agree I don't think we will see him a lot next year, I think he'll play but just in mop up duty. By his redshirt soph season I think he will be in the running for a starting postion. I just used those words because a safety with that size and speed has the potential to be an intimidating force. Beast and monster.

I was keeping an eye on the Furman redshirt through the year, and my recollection is that he did NOT play.  I don't know if anybody else has a 'sort of' recollection of his getting in a bit or playing a few downs.  That's not my recollection.  I think he is 100% legit RS.

Considering player's published  height/weight numbers rank up there with motorcycle specs (dry weight) for accuracy I wouldn't place much significance on the numbers either way. Besides, if you're the size of some of these guys your weight fluctuates significantly depending on whether you just pigged out or spent time in the throne room.

Especially when we're talking about guys this big their weights will fluctuate at least 5-10lbs a week. Depends on how hydrated they were at the weighing, etc.

I wouldn't put much (if any) stock in any weight changes over 3 months under about 15 lbs. maybe they had a big/small lunch and changed a pound or two...

A lot of guys on that list that I thought would get bigger have gotten smaller.  Much smaller, in some cases.  I thought we were supposed to be bigger and more manballish under Hoke?  If these are legit, Terry Talbott will not be playing DT any time soon.

This is an old roster (at least as far as height and weight). These are what these guys were all listed as before last season. So I wouldn't make too much of it.

and his weight or did I miss it?  I feel he is a very important player for us this year and for our depth at D-line.  Hopefully he is making big strides in strength and conditioning.

Once again....for people making tons of comments about who gained and lost weight, this is what players were listed at 1 year ago, not sure why they put the old info back up. I have a printout from a year ago and it's the same. For instance, Talbott was listed at 248 before the season, and 260 during the season. I have a feeling he will be 270+ when the updated info comes up.

Frankly, I think the best part of this is that #1 has been left open.  Hoke understands its mystique and history.  I don't remember which incoming freshman was given that under RR, but that was awful.
