Spring Practice Tidbits
I’ve talked to a few people about spring practice and some of the early enrollees' progress. There’s nothing earth shattering, since we’re basically only 5 practices in, but here’s what I’ve been hearing so far.
- Stephen Hopkins has actually lost 15 pounds; he’s at about 228 now.
- Christian Pace has already gained 15 pounds.
- Jerald Robinson has gained somewhere between 10-15 pounds, and has been mentioned quite a bit. A lot of buzz around him, and the catches he’s made.
- Anthony LaLota is up around 260 pounds now. Unfortunately, he has an elbow injury.
- Cameron Gordon is the most surprising for everyone. His name keeps coming up. I’ve heard that he tackles well and has really good coverage skills. The people I’ve talked to say he’s just a natural ball hawk. Good decision to move him to safety.
- The offense looks more in sync than last year, despite Molk being out. It’s practice, though, so everyone looks good. It feels like there’s a lot of competition out there.
- A lot of the early enrollees have a chip on their shoulder. They want to play early.
- Pat Omameh has impressed everybody. Everyone has described him as “huge.”
- Justin Turner is progressing as well as everyone has hoped. There is no reason for concern
with him. I think everyone had high expectations for him, and he seems to be meeting those.
- Jeremy Gallon has been practicing really well. The person I spoke with about him said he’s really fast, and coming along nicely.
- JT Floyd has been working really hard to see the field. He’s a case where he has more confidence this year, which will help. He understands more of what he’s doing this year.

I'll second the motion for competition. Nothing like fighting for spots to bring out the best in everybody. The worst team with which I was ever affiliated had a tradition of seniors always getting to play. It demotivated everybody. I love that virtually every spot is to some extent up for grabs.
thanks Tom, good work as usual.
I'd like to see J.T. Floyd do well. He's still young and seems like he has pretty good coverage skills. I think last year he played too conservative as a product of being forced into action due to depth issues. If Floyd pulls it together we could possibly move Troy Woolfolk back to Safety or just have better depth at corner.
I remain cautiously optomistic about the defense until I see a reason to think otherwise.
OT: Is the Spring Game going to be an actual game-style scrimmage this season?
Interesting news about Gallon. In the practice video from a few days ago, he looked even quicker off the line than Odoms. Our slot position is going to be electric this year.

Ohh thank God.
Just another random thought. How much would you guys give to be able to spend a summer with Barwis as your personal trainer?
They should do some sort of contest where the winner gets a summer with the man. Or maybe it should be a reality TV show like boot camp or biggest loser.
Ehhhh.
I think I'd rather spend my summer throwing up on an actual beach due to alcoholism rather than puking all over Barwis Beach after a session of ab work.
O-H-I-O: Because the "YMCA" wasn't gay enough.
How about:
Spend the majority of the summer getting cut as hell on Barwis Beach, then go to actual beach and commence with the womens and the alcohols.

Good work as always, Tom.
Glad to hear about Turner, and Gallon. I'm really curious to see him in action, as both a slot and potential punt returner.
Christ in me arise and dispel all the darkness.
For those of us unable to attend the game (I live in Tampa), will the Spring Game be aired on TV? I recall seeing somewhere it would be on the BTN...Can anyone confirm this?
For those unable to watch the BTN because their cable company are ****suckers? . . .
T
Last year, you could watch the whole spring game on the UofM athletic web site, Mgoblue.com a day or two after the game...
I still can't believe they copied their web page name after this site.... lol..

I feel like this post should be prefaced by Professor Farnsworth. "Good News Everyone!"
I realize that looking for bad news out of spring practice is silly, but I usually feel like when players are mentioned by name, like Cam Gordon and Justin Turner, it's because they really are looking good.

At the risk of sounding like a heretic re: UofM fandom, I think this is even better news than anything Tom reported.
New Futurama episodes == 100% pure Colombian AWESOME!
We ARE Michigan....COME GET SOME!!!
Love the news on Cam Gordon.
So then, if we could entertain the possibility that this one single post changes the entire forecast for the secondary, who then do you (plural) see starting in the defensive backfield??
PS. Anyone else lose the ability to post a title to your comments? Weird... TOO WEIRD!!!
Yes. Seems like the four-five posters above have too.
I've seen certain front-paged posts that did not offer the ability to post a title. Off the top of my head I recall one or two quick-hit posts regarding Brian on WTKA for which you weren't able to make a title.
Edit: FA's latest baseball post does not allow you to make a title for your comment.

Love to hear the good news. Anybody hear about players that are struggling? I don't like to hear players are struggling, but it does give a better idea of how the lineup is going to shake out.
How about some of the other young safeties like Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon?
I know from experience dude. If you know what I mean.
God Damnit TomVH! You are the fuckin' man. Why is it that TomVH's posts seem to always fill me with extreme optimism? JT Turner looking as good as everyone hoped?? I've got some pretty high hopes for that guy so if this is true than I'm stoked for September.
Excuse me while I change my britches.
Great news. Optimism flows like a river of gold!
I really like that Cameron Gordon and Justin Turner are looking good. The secondary should hopefully be improved with a lot of these young talented guys coming in.
So since Justin Turner is progressing well, what's the possibility that Woolfolk moves back to Free Safety full time and either Floyd, Dorsey, or Christian takes the other CB position. Cam Gordon, Emilien, Kovacs, Robinson should be more that good enough to handle that box safety position.
I see Dorsey starting either way, either at CB if he has the coverage skills, or at Free Safety because of his speed.
People keep making this suggestion, but Dorsey is not going to start at deep safety, I don't care how fast he is. It takes a lot more than being fast to play well at that position. In high school you can play FS and get away with being nothing more than really fast because the guys you were playing against weren't all D1 athletes. As fast as Demar is, he will go up against receivers and running backs close to, if not as fast, as he is. A wrong step or two and that speed does you no good, or maybe it was enough to turn a touchdown into a mere 50 yard gain with first and goal.
CB is a position that a super-athletic true frosh can play well, deep safety is not. Too much going on mentally for a guy who will be on campus for a couple months before we play UConn.
I think Cam Gordon is competing for deep saftey, which would allow Woolfolk to stay at corner. We wouldn't need any freshman to start in the secondary, which would be a great thing.
Cameron Gordon and Justin Turner are redshirt freshmen, and Dorsey has a chance to start at corner. We're not out of the freshman woods yet...
In finance news, the Dow closed marginally up today, the S&P 500 closed slightly down while the mgoblog.com confidence index posted its largest increase since national signing day.

I think the increase in competition is really going to be huge. Just getting used to competing every down for something that really matters (wins or playing time) is a huge skill to have. Any word on Big Will?
