Softball's Bree Evans Seriously Hurt

By Brian — October 1st, 2009 at 9:59 PM — 50 comments

AnnArbor.com:

Michigan softball center fielder Bree Evans is in serious condition at University of Michigan Hospital after a head-on collision at home plate during an exhibition game with Michigan State on Thursday evening.

Evans, 19, was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to the hospital by ambulance, according to Michigan sports information director Leah Howard.

Best wishes to her and her family.

Update: Paul's got a tweet with slightly encouraging news:

Glimmer of good news. As they were moving Bree Evans onto the gurney she was able to move her toes. Game called in the bottom of the 4th.

Also, a report from the scene relayed by Craig Ross:

Michigan scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up, 3 - 0, but then Bree Evans tried to score from third and slid head first into the MSU catcher, probably hitting her head on the bottom of the catcher's shin guards, something just about the top of the shoe, you could hear the impact. Evans appeared to be knocked out cold, and she lay there, face straight down, for a good 20 minutes, not moving at all. at long last, an ambulance arrived and drove right onto the field, they rolled Evans over, stabilized her neck, put her on a back board, and took her away to the hospital.

Stunning that it took so long for serious help to get there. It would have been the better part of 45 minutes between incident and getting her off loaded at the hospital. Surprised that no emergency vehicle was present near the field, as there is with other sports. The stadium went instantly silent when Evans went down and stayed hushed throughout the rest of the time, until she was taken away. The game was canceled at that point. It was hard to tell whether Evans was out for the entire time, someone in front of us said that the people from the ambulance asked what hurt, and she said neck and back. I certainly didn't hear anything. There seemed to be no bleeding, but there also was absolutely no motion from her for the entire time. Looked like a bad one, but I guess we wait and see.

A potentially serious injury almost happened in the bottom half of the previous inning when the State third baseman hit the fence and flipped over it while chasing a pop up. She was a little shaken up, but nothing like the Evans collision.

Scary

Just about the scariest thing I've ever seen, since it was such a routine thing that went so wrong... she was sliding into home plate headfirst, her head hit the catcher's leg... she didn't move after that, but apparently has mobility back now. I couldn't tell if it was force of impact, funny angle, or some combination. It was almost surreal... you would never expect a softball player to almost break their neck... leg injuries sure, but not something like that.

The thing I don't understand is why they didn't have an ambulance on scene at the game, you would think there would be at least paramedics at every sporting event just in case. It took awhile for the ambulance to get there once called.

My guess on why there was no ambulance

Although I believe it is required for all games in-season, this was an exhibition and likely did not require the presence of emergency personnel. I would be willing to bet, though, that UM will change that policy going forward.

Makes sense, but really,

Makes sense, but really, there should be an ambulance on the athletic campus at all times during the early morning and during late afternoon/early evening, since teams are almost always practicing. They should have one stationed out of the Yost parking lot.

My brother is a pretty big M

My brother is a pretty big M softball fan (he has season tix) and went to this game as well. His seats are pretty good (ok basically all seats at Alumni Field are good, but I digress) and are right behind home plate about 4-5 rows up. So he had a very good view of this play and was able to describe it to me in excellent detail.

Needless to say, it was hard to listen to as he described the play and the aftermath - I can only imagine what it felt like to witness it in person. My brother is not an emotional person in the least and I could tell he was very shaken up about this as he was talking to me.

I will be saying a prayer for Bree tonite.

Can you describe what happened?

It sounds like you have a detailed description of the event, but perhaps you have your reasons for choosing not to delve into it. My thoughts are with the girl and her family. She is in capable hands at Michigan Hospital. I hope everyone keeps her in their prayers.

Ambulance

It must have taken close to 30 minutes from the time of the injury until they had her loaded into the ambulance. Having an ambulance stationed at the game would have reduced this time substantially.

Thoughts and prayers to her

Thoughts and prayers to her and her family. Softball is way more dangerous than anyone gives it credit for.

When I first heard this I thought for sure a metal bat had something to do with it. Someone in college baseball is going to get killed because of one of those someday.

Thoughts and prayers to her and her family...

Also, I am really glad they canceled the game immediately after this point. I am wondering if they would have had it been a "real" game. To play after such a traumatic event would be excruciatingly hard.

Bree is able to walk

According to the facebook of a teammate, Bree walked today. I met her a couple times through mutual friends and she is really nice and a cool person. Definitely keep her in your prayers

Sad/scary/encouraging

Thoughts and prayers for Bree and her family.

Who is the complete and utter failure at life/humanity who has been going through this thread and negging people who are offering prayers and support for this young woman and her family? Whoever you are, you're disgusting.

Similar Story

I am not trying to make this about me but it sounds like something similar that happened to me in college (basketball). I collided with someone in practice and spent a couple hours in pain and unable to move anything. Long story short, I played three weeks later against Grand Valley and suffer no effects from the injury today. Everytime I see these injuries occur I get a sick feeling in my stomach, but there is hope. Here's to hoping Bree sees the same outcome I did! It sounds like things are headed down the right path.

Chilling...

There's nothing quite like a serious injury (including Tebow last week) that reminds us all that sports, as much as they impact our Saturdays and beyond, are so insignificant next to the well being of the players involved. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family Bree - get well soon!

Story updated

The Ann Arbor News story has been updated - she's still in the hospital, but listed at fair condition rather than serious. Not good still, but hopefully that means we can count on full recovery.

Keep the prayers coming, everyone.

So happy to hear she's on the mend!

I've thought of little else all day. I met Bree last year at the Regionals and she was about the sweetest person you could ever meet. I know the softball team is very close, so I'm praying for all of them along with Bree and her family. I hope this story has a happy ending.

Bree's sister: Thank you for stopping by and, if you could, please keep us updated!

Bree.

Bree wants to thank everyone for their thoughts. She is doing a lot better. Almost herself completely smiling and laughing. She walked today which is good news but she has to use a walker. All test are coming back as good. From my family, we would like too thank you for your thoughts. I will keep you posted throughout the week.

Good to hear she is getting better

Hope she makes a full recovery and quickly.

When I read the original story it sounded like she might have done something more permanent.
