When Haylie Wagner was a freshman Brian and I met for a softball game and discussed how we're going to make an indie football preview book. At the time he said the problem with softball is the pitchers are so dominant that games end 1-0, and Exhibit A was this freshman pitcher before us, one of two such luxuries (Driesenga) on that team, mowing down overmatched hitters with her nasty lefty stuff.

Tonight, in a year hitting came back like it was 1920, facing the Babe Ruth of softball, Michigan plated its first batter and Haylie pitched seven shutout innings to put Michigan one win away from a national championship.

And you can't have one without the other…

See you tomorrow at 8.

I'll be honest, I couldn't bear to watch that game! I had to settle to flipping back to it every now and again. It was tense, a 1-0 affair - how could that stand up against these Lady Gators? - and it turned out to be enough. Grats, Wolverines, GO BLUE!!!

I love the fact that Wagner calls her own pitches.  She sets the pace and attacks the batter.  I find that much more interesting and intelligent. Watching Florida's all-american pitcher was boring. She's a senior who is not trusted with her own pitch calling.  Advantage. Michigan!

and I don't use that word lightly.  These two teams are miles ahead of the rest of the teams in the country. It's not even close.  They are playing a series for the ages.  I just hope that the game tomorrow is as good as the last 2 have been.  It's been a pleasure to watch this.

I'm sensing a good game from Michigan tomorrow night and a win.  I think their bats look a little better than Florida's and they could really assert tomorrow.  Won't be easy but now I like the odds.

Softball is not boring!  I love their enthusiasm and it starts at the t-ball level.  I've coached for about 30 years, mostly boys,  My daughter's years in softball were the best. Girls have a number of fun cheers and really enjoy the game.  Plus, they are easier to coach since they listen and apply what they are taught.
