Site Update Comment Count

Brian

Hi. We're putting the site back online after putting in further checks that we hope should shut off intrusions. Now only God (root) can modify the js and css files that were the attack vector; we've done some other things for lickety-split notification, changed passwords, done all that.

As always, only time will tell. Sorry for any trouble caused or withdrawal symptoms experienced. Warning: we are keeping a close eye on things and if we see a recurrence we will take the site down again.

a bigger problem for some of us Cavemenn err...MGo users who are not very computer savy.  I just read this on  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic354181.html you mayor may not be as safe as you would like to believe.

I say better safe than sorry.

FWIW, My Tin foil hat is telling me that it may not be the ads.  I really believe these "attacks" aimed directly at MGOBLOG to hurt Brian and it's users.

As one of our resident troll hunters, there is some evidence in support of your Tin foil sense. Since Coach Hoke's recruiting blitz took off, there have been some notable troll takedowns on the Board, some of which I have been a participant. Not long after these takedowns (12-36 hours), there would be a spike in malware or less-sophisticated-troll activity.

and just thankful you're back up and running. Everything considered, you do a hell of a job with this blog. I am eternally grateful. Thank you!

a bot with human support.  Say a human operator uses a program with stock connecting phrases and picks key words out of the post it replies to (Michigan Football, Hoke, 57.5%) and uses those to build replies at random.  There were several occasions where Chet and other trolls like him would give nonsense replies to users for no apparent reason, while it was engaged in strategy debate on another thread.  It doesn't make any sense.

The human operator is there to enter CAPTCHAs as needed and to pick when or where to respond, or maybe the program picks a random post.  Who knows how these people get their jollies.

I think a certain someone might be mad about all this talk of the Shotgun:

Photobucket That's right it's Brody Hake; he is Hoke's stereotypical alter ego who only runs jumbo Maryland I sets.

I'm surprised brian didn't take the site down earlier this week when people were first reporting the malware infections. it would have been nice to nip this in the bud earlier and might have saved a headache for many people.

Yes that would have been the responsible thing to do! To prevent us from reading about football? Are you kidding me? I'd rather have a virus and read MGo and Play an integral part.

You mean, "Woops!  Sorry, I wrecked your laptop!"  Jesus, fuck man.  I am so pissed off.

The only thing cooler than this site getting viruses all the time was when Rod was getting fired and Hoke was getting hired, and the site was down because it couldn't handle the traffic.  Arguably the most important time for a Michigan sports site to be up-and-running, and you couldn't handle it.

"Legitimacy" is a world away for MGoBlog.

Bye.

I never said Windows users are idiots. That's you putting words in my text bubble.
<br>It's no big secret that Windows are highly vulnerable to cyber attacks and always have been. I got burned with Windows a couple times myself. So I spent the money any bought a Mac book pro... Problem solved.

Perhaps my tone was a bit snarky.
<br>I would disagree that one could buy a similar machine for 1/3 the cost though. My Mac was $1300, a comparable PC runs about $900 on sale. Add on year after year of anti virus protection and it about equals out in the end. I downloaded pretty good anti virus software from apple for free.

First of all, I got mine on a sale.  If you check slickdeals.net, they post crazy deals.  Also, one of the nice things about a PC is that you can build one (or have someone you know build one) for a fraction of the cost of a pre-built system.

Apple is definitely aiming at the higher end of the laptop market. If you compare the price of a Macbook to a competitor's high-end laptop, you'll find that you're paying a premium but not *that* much of one. In the example above, both the graphics card and the processor are different. For instance, the AMD chip looks like it goes for about $106 on Newegg, and while I couldn't find a price on the Intel chip in the Mac Intel recommends $195. For a similar chip (the i5-2300), Intel recommends $177 and Newegg has it going for $185. So it's not an apples-to-apples comparison.

I am certainly not saying that you can't build a cheaper PC if you buy your own components. I've done that repeatedly, and I wouldn't do it any other way without a very good reason. Nor am I saying that you can't build a PC with cheaper components and get good performance, or that some of the cheaper components aren't at least sometimes better values. You definitely pay a premium for a Mac. I am saying that if you compare a Mac (pr preferably a Macbook) to a model that has nearly identical components, the premium is not *that* much. Frankly, I've had much better luck with Apple hardware in terms of quality than with Lenovo, HP and particularly Dell, too.

Building your own laptop isn't as easy, though.

i truly hope you're trolling and not being serious right now, because if you're being serious you've just exposed to everyone how ignorant you are. You clearly have no idea how much work Brian has put into the technical side of this site, let alone all the of work he does with the content. Do you know how expensive it is to maintain the hardware necessary to support the traffic this site gets? Do you know how many lines of coding are in this site that he probably has to sift through on a normal basis to try to avoid issues like this? In my line of work, teams of web devs are the norm to support a site of this size, yet Brian handles basically all of it for our pleasure and doesnt make us pay a dime. All the money he gets from it is a little revenue from commission links and PPC ads and maybe a little here and there from donations. After hearing your little tantrum, I for one do not feel sorry you at all for having your computer infected because its clear how little your respect what Brian does. Go f*** yourself on some other site.

But let's not act like this is Brian's hobby, and he's making some spare pocket change off of this. It's his job, and one that pays well enough for him to not work another regular job. Which is why he treats it as his job and got on it right away and got things operational as fast as possible, in a professional manner. But he's not running a charity here. He's executing a new business model successfully.

Blue HOV: I think I speak for many in the MGoCommunity when I say please impale yourself, you self-righteous douche. Guess what? My computer (work) was down for a day because of MGoBlog, too! Oh noes! It turns out, it was my fault because I hadn't installed the antivirus! in violation of company policy! Oh SHIT. My home computer? Fine.  Just like, in this case, you not installing an antivirus on whatever computer you got infected was dumb. Blaming Brian Cook, or the internet, makes you a pollyanna and, at the same time, a) possessing an inflated sense of  your own importance, b.) possessing an inflated sense of your fucking computer's importance (unless you are an options trader or something similar, if so, see d.), c.) somehow possessing (if a. and b. aren't correct) the idea that you're alone in this experience (because otherwise, you wouldn't feel like the "special snowflake" with the super-important computer and/or life) and/or d.) an idiot who used a computer by which he derives income to visit a personal site without installing a proper antivirus and then blamed the personal site instead of your own contributory negligence for your "affliction."

As the comment was over the top, but keep in mind many of us have no choice what Internet browsers and antivirus is installed- our IT departments regulate that. In fact, when I got it, I couldn't even reboot in safe mode. Luckily I could fix it booted normally.
<br>
<br>Do you really think people with work laptops A) never visit the site at work and B) buy a second laptop for reading news?
