SEARCHBITS XXXI: Assistant Time Comment Count

dj-durkin-florida-gators-defensive-coordinator[1]

no jerkin' Durkin around

DURKIN SEEMS IN. 247 reports that Durkin has turned down an offer to be UNC's DC and will almost certainly be announced at Michigan in the near future. This is not really news—Durkin's name has been rumored for two weeks now—but it seems likely he's announced ASAP here and starts pounding the recruiting trail. There are reports he's already talking to recruits about coming up to Ann Arbor.

We'll have to wait a few days for it to be official since Durkin is Florida's interim head coach and the Birmingham Bowl is on January 3rd. But that appears to be done-done-done.

MARROW DEFINITELY IN PLAY. Depending on who you listen to, Kentucky TE coach Vince Marrow is either not about to leave Mark Stoops…

…or very much open to the idea of moving.

One of the first assistant dominoes may fall within the next 24 to 48 hours, as Kentucky tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow has been contacted by Michigan and would take a job with the staff if offered one.

Either way it seems likely that chatter about Michigan going after him is accurate.

MICHIGAN MEN OR HARBAUGH HOMBRES? FWIW, soon-to-recommit TE Chris Clark:

That's good news for current 49ers, less so for Erik Campbell and Jeff Hecklinski. Exactly who these guys might be is still murky—Harbaugh has a lot of affiliates after his days at San Francisco and Stanford.

INCOMING GOOD IDEAS. The Sacramento Bee threw out a couple of new names:

Several of his long-time allies, including 49ers receivers coach John Morton and Tim Drevno, a former 49ers offensive line coach who last season was at USC, are believed to be joining him in Ann Arbor.

John Morton is currently the Niners WR coach; before that he had a number of roles with USC. He started as a WR coach, added "passing game coordinator" for a couple years, became the bonafide OC when Steve Sarkisian took the Washington job, and then went back to position coaching when Lane Kiffin came in. He was a WR coach a few places before that. He's a Michigan native who went to Western.

123113-drevno-hdr[1]

remember mapquest you guys

Tim Drevno is USC's OL coach. Drevno is a longtime Har-pal, having coached under him at San Diego, Stanford, and with the 49ers. Drevno was the OL coach for Stanford's two excellent Harbaugh offenses, forging the ass-kicking OL that Stanford came to be known for over the past half-dozen years. At San Francisco, 2012 saw all five(!) 49ers OL selected for the Pro Bowl. His line at USC last year featured three true freshmen and zero seniors; while they did give up a butt-ton of sacks USC's main back hit almost 1500 yards this year at 5.4 a pop.

Drevno was awarded the title of running game coordinator at USC, part of his reason for moving on and  may require a similar title at Michigan. If Michigan is offering the same title that might close the door on Ty Wheatley some since it's been reported he wants to move up in the ranks if he's going to come back to Michigan.

A final cherry on top of this potential hire is that Drevno called USC his dream job less than twelve months ago.

WHEATLEY? The Bills are ominously "evaluating" all their assistants. If Wheatley gets pushed out of there you might as well put him in pen in Ann Arbor.

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR? Henson says Greg Roman, his current OC with the 49ers. That would make sense. Guy needs a job, knows Harbaugh well, etc. Not sure if that's happening-happening or just a guy who looks like a likely fit. Roman has been exclusively an NFL guy save for a single year in HS and two years with Stanford as the TE/OT coach, also during Stanford's nascent ass-kicking phase.

Roman is in contention for the Bucs' OC job and there's been chatter that he actually prefers the NFL, unlike Harbaugh. His coaching history suggests that. One thing that's not happening: sticking around the 49ers.

WHAT IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE

A guess at the moment:

OFFENSE Coach confidence DEFENSE Coach confidence
OC Greg Roman low DC DJ Durkin lock
QB Harbaugh lock DL Durkin lock
RB Ty Wheatley maybe LB Greg Mattison probable
WR John Morton probable DE/OLB Roy Manning low
OL Tim Drevno maybe DB Greg Jackson none
TE Vince Marrow maybe Spec. Teams N/A none

OTHERS IN PLAY: Erik Campbell (WR), Jerry Montgomery(DL), Andy Moeller(OL), Fred Jackson(RB), Mike Hart(RB).

One problem with this alignment: it only has four defensive coaches. There are five on offense plus Harbaugh. If both Morton and Drevno do come I think that might mean Marrow is staying at Kentucky.

When I discovered Coach Harbaugh wanted to lower his salary to pay his coaching staff -- This is a man who will do anything it takes to help the team win.

I can't wait for January 5... That week should be very exciting as Coach assembles his staff and fills out the recruiting class. Buckle Up!

Are these "good problems"? I can't tell...it's been so long since we had "good options" and "good problems"...I just can't remember what they look, smell and feel like.  Oh god, it feels so good to have good problems.

Get Jim Harbaugh

Let me first say that I am in no way advocating that Mike Hart should be the RB coach at this time. I am asking, however, for the reason that Harbaugh and Hart allegedly don't like each other.

Speaking of Hart, I heard from some MSU and OSU fans that they would think it would be hilarious if Hart were the RB coach. Why? I have no idea. First of all, MSU has absolutely nothing to say about Hart because he never lost to them, but second of all, Hart was a GREAT RB for Michigan and he is a good coach from what I have heard and read. I think he has a bright future in coaching and would make a good RB coach for any team.

First, I don't think we know that Harbaugh and Hart don't like each other.  They may have a great relationship, a chilly relationship, or no relationship.  It was a long time ago, and a lot of us were miffed at JH for ripping on his alma mater.  Some of us were especially miffed because there was a whiff of uncomfortable truth to some of JH's criticisms.  I'm guessing most of us have worked through any residual anger, and are glad to have Harbaugh at the helm (I sure as heck am).

That stated, it stems from THIS.  Hart laid into Harbaugh pretty hard at the time, but it's important to remember that Hart was very young at the time, and defending his school from what he thought was an unfair attack:

“That’s a guy I have no respect for. When you graduate from the University of Michigan and you’re going to talk about your school like that, a great institution like that we have, to say we’re not true student athletes. It’s coming from a guy who, I don’t know, maybe wants to coach here, and is mad he didn’t get a job here. A guy like that I have no respect for. It’s funny to me, because we don’t let great student-athletes in, but he just accepted one of our transfers [Jason Forcier]. What kind of sense does that make? He obviously wants guys like us at his school and he’s mad he can’t get them. It’s nothing against Stanford. I just have no respect for that guy. I don’t know how you can say that. He’s not a Michigan man. I obviously wish he never played here before.”

Hart really had a big mouth when he was playing.  I cringe everytime I see the "little brother" clip.  The quote above is pretty damn bad.  I don't see how JH looks past that unless Hart calls him personally and begs for forgivenss.  Of course, JH has been known to run his mouth from time to time, so maybe he'll feel a connection with Hart ...

Jim took the high road at his press conference when asked about his earlier comments. I think if he feels that Mike Hart is the best RB coach available, they'll talk it out and he'll be hired. Is he the best RB coach available? I have no idea, but if he can coach our RBs to HOLD ONTO THE DAMN BALL!!! like he did, I'll have no problem with this hypothetical hire.

People like Hart are why ball gags were invented. He needed one before the "Little Bro" crack. He never fumbled till we played against Fl. but I can kind of see that, it's hard carrying a football while doing the Gator chop. He definately needed one before going ape shit on Harbaugh. I can cut him a little slack on that because to think Harbaugh was not a Michigan man explains how little he knew.

For some reason I swore that when I was looking up Roman, he was a co-OC at Stanford as well, but now I cannot find any mention of it. If his only stint at OCing was at San Fran, I like his hire less. We'll see what happens.

Considering Hart said Harbaugh was a guy he had "no respect for" and, "He's not a Michigan man. I wish he'd never played here." (in 2007 after Harbaugh's academic comments on U-M) it's hard to imagine him being on this staff.

Harbaugh has pretty much said he made a mistake in making those comments in public. At the same time, I never had a problem with what he said, and it can be taken as a desire to see Michigan be at it's best.

Hart did what he should have done - Defended his school.

This situation seems like an easy opportunity to make amends.

No way you want Hart within 100 miles of Ann Arbor? The guy had a great 4 year career for Michigan and any smack talk he leveled at MSU was justified by his teams 4 and 0 record against State.

His comments about Harbaugh were over the top, but  I don't understand how you are bashing a guy for defending his school. Harbaugh admitted he shouldn't have made those comments, and if he deems Hart good enough to be on the staff I would love to have him back.

Hart was also on the team that lost to App State, and was 0-4 vs OSU. So yeah, like I said, he needed to shut his fucking mouth. No way would I want him on that staff. IMO, he was a major contributor to the decline of Michigan Football.

Mike Hart played a lot of great football for Michigan, he lost to App State and never beat Ohio State, and I could be wrong, but I don't remember him talking much trash about them. He beat MSU consistently and subsequently talked about it, his record otherwise, to me at least, is largely irrelevant to his talking trash about MSU.

If you don't like players running their mouth at all, that is fine, we can agree to disagree. I personally have no problem with talking a little trash between rivals, and I don't think anything Hart said about MSU was ever out of line.

I also have no idea how how you put Michigans last seven years of wandering through the woods with two straight poor coaching decisions on Mike Hart. How exactly was he a major contributor in the decline of Michigan football? Because he called MSU little brother?

I agree that he did play a lot of great football at Michigan.  He was rock solid and protected the ball and played his ass off.  I have no issue with players talking trash on the field, but I'd prefer they keep it out of the media.  To me, he doesn't have the right to talk shit about MSU if he can't beat OSU or get his team prepared to handle App St. (He was a Senior when they lost that game).  What was the end result of his MSU trash talk?  That clip gets played in the second half of 6 out of the last 7 games that were dominated by Sparty.  Thanks but no thanks.

You may be right, perhaps I am placing too much blame on Hart for the last seven years.  That turret should be pointed squarely at Lloyd Carr for:

1.Allowing said trash talking about MSU and Harbs.

2. App St.

3. His well documented lack of support for the next coach.

Here's to the new era of Michigan Football and putting the past seven years behind us.

This is the guy (after Derkin and Mattison) I really want to see most.

I don't know that Wheatley has done anything to get anyone too excited about beyond a 'lateral move' to RB coach (which he seems unlikely to take).  Ditto for Moeller.

It does seem unlikely that we'll be able to get all these NFL guys and USC coaches to take the same jobs at UofM but if Harbaugh harbaughs than Harbaughs be harbaughing so Harbaughs for all!

I think you are talking about raises and new titles to get some of these guys, but it seems doable.  If Roman isn't coming, I could easily see giving Drevno an OC title (in addition to OL coach and run game coordinator, which is his title at USC).  Morton comes in as WR coach and passing game coordinator (pretty much the title/role he's had at USC in the past).  Harbaugh handles QB.  And the guy from Kentucky gets a raise and recruiting guru title alone with handling TE.  Add a RB coach and you're good to go on that side of the ball.  Then some combo of Durkin, Mattison, and a few others on D.

I don't think you're going to get the 49ers OC, Bills RB, Trojans OL, and 49ers WR coach to all take the equivalent job at Michigan.  I think you'll have to balance giving some guys promotions and then fill remaining positions with younger up-and-comers (e.g., Hart).  The "if Roman isn't coming" scenario makes sense, but if Roman is coming, those other options won't all be there as well.

Is there any chance of Mattison staying on as DC? He's done a pretty good job, although I admit I don't know a whole lot about recruiting and if someone of his age can still connect with the younger generation

I may have overlooked a thread directed to this topic. It seems to me that we need to upgrade our strength and conditioning. Any projections for a new s&c guru/overlord? Jane Fonda or Mike Tyson?
