Seantrel Henderson-probably not taking official visit to UM

"I know his five official visits. He will definitely visit Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida. Florida State is one that could change. He might decide to visit somewhere else besides Florida State. He could visit both the Florida schools or he might just take one to Florida." -His dad

The rest of the story is on ESPN recruiting.

I saw this article too but

I saw this article too but the way I took this was he was using his official visits to visit some of the schools that were farther away from home that he was interested in. I know Ohio State is not too far away but is further away than Michigan. He has already been to Michigan and I am not too worried about this. Maybe just me being optimistic.

Everything I've read

Everything I've read indicates the same thing. He's using his officials for the furthest destinations. Doesn't really mean Michigan is out of the running. There was an article somewhere speculating that right now he wants to stay close to home and that if Minnesota can show signs of life this season, it could lock him up. If Brewster continues to struggle, then it's a toss-up, but Michigan seems to be a strong contender.

"...what do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"

Grammar Police

Nit-picky, I know. But you meant "farthest destinations." Farther refers to distance, whereas further refers to degree.

For example: Magnus ran farther than Dex. Dex explained it well, but Magnus took it one step further.

The more you know.

You know, there's nothing

You know, there's nothing wrong with learning something. There was a time when I didn't know the distinction, so I would use the words incorrectly.

There are a lot of words that people use incorrectly, simply because they've never been taught the correct usage. I would hope that if I unknowingly use a word incorrectly, that someone would let me know so I can stop doing so. That's all I was trying to do.

I didn't make fun of the kid for saying "farther" I merely let him and anyone else on the board who was curious the proper usage. If you don't like advice, don't take it.

I appreciate

the knowledge you have shared with me. I did not know the difference between farther and further and now I do. Sometimes the way words are used can be tricky.

So I do not feel like you should be hanged for teaching a lesson on word usage. Some people just get too hung up on it.

I am sure your heart is in

I am sure your heart is in the right place, but consider thinking of it this way. Using a word correctly is using it in a way people understand it. There is no platonic English language, it is fluid. When the word nice was first used in the English language it meant "silly" or "stupid" before it morphed into meaning "pleasant" or "inoffensive". There are many many other examples of this sort. Trying to appeal to a word's "true" definition, then, is really silly indeed.

Most linguistic anthropolgists agree that when a word like farther and further blend together in common parlance that there is negligible to no loss in our ability to communicate. The slight difference in meaning of these words can almost always be picked up by paying attention to context. And if this were not the case and a significant level of confusion were to come about by the "misuse" of these words then for the purposes of communication we, the speakers of the English language, would make sure to keep the words distinct in common language.

You can hate on me all you want to, but what can you possibly say to somebody that looks like Rambo, pretty much, with his shirt off?

Totally gratuitous,

Totally gratuitous, but

Another, perhaps easier, way to think about it is that both actually do refer to distance, but farther involves literal distance (Only six miles to go) and further is used in contexts referring to figurative distance (I can't take this discussion any further)

But, the OED states "a large intermediate class of instances in which the choice between the two forms is arbitrary."

from Bill Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words - a great reference, never leaves my desk.

Sounds reasonable

Looks like he's using the opportunity to travel around and have some fun being the No. 1 recruit in the country. This isn't a kid who's been keeping things close, or someone whose officials are the first indications of where he's leaning.

If he takes all of these officials, though, I'm guessing they'll be doing a lot of negative recruiting to be sent our way, since nobody really has a playbook for dissing his other leader ("um, Tim Brewster sucks monkey balls.")

This team is under construction. We thank you for your patience.

You left out some info

He also said this, FWIW:

"I can give you about six to eight of the schools he is considering. You have to keep the Gophers in there in case he decides to stay home, but I'm not real sure where that stands. There is Minnesota, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, I know Notre Dame's been on his list and Ohio State."

There was also a rivals

There was also a rivals article released, in which he mentioned three schools he will for sure be using his official visits on. Michigan wasn't on that list. Another interesting note, apparently a lot of schools, including UCLA, UNC and Michigan, are saying that he would be able to walk on the basketball team also.

Welp

When you consider all those schools have been in the national title game within the past 5 years, and we're coming off a dreadful season in which we accomplished nothing to really impress recruits...even being in the running at this point is a testament to RichRod's crew.

And if he commits to us, it's like Derrick Williams to PSU x10000.

I said - not good enough.

agree in part

...but if we turn it around this year, even by the modest amount of 7 wins, most recruits will see that as proof that RR is turning the program around. I would think that the unique type of OL recruit we look for will play the biggest role.

I disagree with the 7 wins

I disagree with the 7 wins you chose for the barometer that HS kids will be using. A HS kid is going to see UM at 7-5 and think, wow, they still stink. I think 8-4, with a bowl win, is enough to convince them that there is progress, enough to the point where they would want to be a part of something great. Not that there is a big difference, but in the eyes of these HS kids, a two game swing could mean the difference between losing interest and gaining interest. Just my epinion.

DW reference

Team in the dumps after a few shittacular seasons, no real reason to attend the school in the face of other elite schools offering him(Williams was a Florida commit once upon a time. That's pretty much what I mean. And Williams was from Maryland, methinks.

This fall will go a long way

This fall will go a long way towards landing a LOT of recruits I feel. A big improvement would obviously be excellent for recruiting.

Uh, !!!.
And now I will proceed to talk myself down for the next 6 months.

You can hate on me all you want to, but what can you possibly say to somebody that looks like Rambo, pretty much, with his shirt off?

Great post

I'm still a little leery of "insider" posts like that ever since the janitor post about the players' progress last year, but this is probably more reliable, plus it's better written.

With recruiting, I try to place myself in the recruit's shoes and think back to when I was choosing college merely as a student. This sounds incredibly cheesy, but it's like falling in love; you just know when it's right. I just knew right away that I wanted to spend the next 4 years of my life in Ann Arbor, and so I figure that recruits must feel the same way when they commit to a school. For the kid's own sake, a recruit show not come to a school, be it Michigan or anywhere, if he doesn't feel like it's the right fit. For football recruits, the coaches and the program are part of the overall package.

If the info in that post you linked is true, then it really does sound like Michigan left that kind of lasting impression on Henderson, which would be great for us.

Ann Arbor is a classy broad.

fwiw

The "insider" from the scout board that the post was derived from originally posted all of that information in response to information coming out that USC was Seantrel's favorite.

I have not yet seen him post a response to the information surfacing that U of M is currently not included in Seantrel's five officials. He claims to know Seantrel's uncle and high school coaching staff.

Like our chances

Having the big guy, (Hutchinson), down the road clearing the way for All Day to score 15-20 TD's this year has to help our cause a little, agree?

John beilein

From Dylan of umhoops Twitter:

RT @freepwolverines : RT @davetelep : John beilein doing a favor for rich rodriguez and eyeballs seantrel henderson, no 1 fb (recruit) in usa

Seantrel is reprtedly a bigger bball fan than football fan but is just much much better at fball.
I don't know how realistic it would be for seantrel to play hoops at um but it can't hurt having jb do a little scouting on him. Who knows, maybe he would never play but maybe he could dress out with the team and practice with them.

It can only help having beilein check him out.
