Reports: Bryan Mone Breaks Ankle, Possibly Out For Season Comment Count

Ace

[Bryan Fuller]

Rumors that sophomore DT Bryan Mone had suffered a serious injury in Tuesday's practice first hit The Fort yesterday, and unfortunately they've been corroborated by multiple sources, including a Scout writer based out of Mone's home state of Utah:

Michigan isn't commenting on the matter, which comes as little surprise.

This would be a major blow to depth on the interior of the defensive line. Ryan Glasgow, Willie Henry, and Maurice Hurst are going to have to play a lot of snaps, and Mone's absence likely means larger roles than expected for Matt Godin and Brady Pallante, as well. Chris Wormley should also be able to fold inside on occasion, though that will in turn test Michigan's already lacking depth at end.

With Mone looking poised for a breakthrough season, there's no question this is a significant loss, even at a position of relative strength for the program. Here's hoping for a speedy and full recovery.

I would think taking a medical redshirt would be in the best interest for him and the team at this point.  The only scenario that I can see where we'd play him this season, if he does recover in time, would be if the DT position gets hit especially hard by the injury hating gods.

Please don't let that happen.

Everybody is back from last year and Mone didn't get THAT many snaps as a backup.  Hurst may step into Mone's backup role, or more likely, it'll be a combination of guys including Godin (who was going to play anyway), plus more snaps for Henry, Glasgow, etc.

The loss is more about Mone's potential to be elite. He hasn't proven he actually is yet.  The other aspect to consider is schematic -- the possibility that the 3-4 alignment rumors might hinge on a jumbo-sized true NT that is no longer available.

Big loss for sure, but it remains to be seen if any one guy (i.e., Hurst) will be relied upon heavily or not.

Wish all the best to Mone in a quick and full recovery from this injury.

This especially sucks because he won't have the opportunity to play in his home town of Salt Lake City.

I've had both, grade three ankle sprains and broken ankles.  I'll take another broken ankle any day.  First, the pain isn't as great, at least it wasn't for me.  2nd, I was out of my cast in six weeks and walking 18 holes just a couple of weeks later.  My ankle sprain, OTOH, prevented me from playing golf for almost a year because of stability problems.

It is the 1 position we could take a hit but still damn.   And when 300+ lb men go thru any serious injury I start to get worried about what they will be when they get back - see Fox and Pipkins recently (yes those were ACLs but still).

Well if it really is just a fibula fracture and it doesn't require any surgery or anything, prognosis should be very good; simple bone fractures knit very well. Just need to build up the atrophied muscle after being non-weight bearing, and should be good as new. Much different than Pipkins' and Fox's injuries.

From what I've heard, it's the fibula, but the distal fibula where it connects to the whole ankle joint. So they're saying 'ankle' for simplicity sake from what I can tell. But the fibula would be the actual bone. I broke my fibula playing football actually, although mine was proximal up right under the knee joint.

I've heard people say he was the 2nd best player on the entire defense. That, to me, is far fetched...but he was improving at the end of last year and with a big spring/summer, there is no question that he could've been dominant this year.

I was looking forward to him on the defense more than any other players not names Jabrill or Jourdan.

I'm glad he gets another year, but if he's as good as people were saying...he won't be around to see it.

I posted this in the other thread that got deleted, but I would imagine a broken ankle is a much much easier to come back from than a broken femur just by the size of the femur alone. A broken femur could potentially be a career ending injury right? Any mgodoctors want to weigh in on this?

I am no doctor, but depending on what "break" means the ankle joint is pretty complicated machinery. Could be worse than a single fractured leg bone?

My daughter, a volleyball player, had a broken ankle which required pinning. As I recall it was crutches and cast for like 6 -8 weeks, and, rehab after that for quite a while.

Let's wait and see how Harbaugh responds to being asked direct questions about this at a press event before making comparisons.  They also may be waiting on getting an actual prognosis before releasing anything.  This isn't like poisoning Funchess' reputation because they didn't want to talk about injuries.

??  i couldnt care less about what imjury information is realeased.

How can you call funchess's reputation poisoned?  What round did he go in?

What was his career total in drops?  How about drops on third down that would have extended the drive?  But those were clearly drops due to a coache choosing not to disclose injury information, right?

I thought you were making a comment about wanting the injury information released, along with making a meta comment on how people are responding to this vs. what they would do if this happened under Hoke.

As far as Funchess, finding out he was playing with a broken toe was a valuable piece of context that would have helped explain what was going on.  It doesn't excuse everything, but it would have been nice to at least be able to give him somewhat the benefit of the doubt.  Something we and, by extension, Funchess were denied because Hoke stopped talking about injuries.
