SI's Thayer Evans is reporting that Michigan will hire Boston College defensive coordinator Don Brown in the same capacity at Michigan:

Sam Webb has an unconfirmed report that Brown told BC's players he would depart today.

This is the first that Brown's name has come up in connection with the Michigan job, which goes to show how much this was on lockdown. I was momentarily disappointed and then I remembered spending much of the year mad at BC for having the audacity to  be above Michigan in the rankings.

This is not because they beat up on Howard and Maine. S&P ignores that stuff. Meanwhile let's play spot the outlier in Dalvin Cook's season:

image

15 for 54 is BC. everyone else got nuked except Georgia Tech, which managed the 17 for 82 above.

BC's defense finished the year third in S&P+ behind only FSU and Michigan despite having nowhere near the talent either of those two teams had *and* having the kind of crippling dysfunction on the other side of the ball that usually leads to late landslide victories. You know, the kind of offense that can do this:

Wake Forest 3, Boston College 0: It's okay to hate something you love sometimes

Football Study Hall's Ian Boyd wrote a feature on Brown's defense not five days ago. Read the whole thing but here's the nutshell version:

With a quick LB corps, safeties that can play multiple roles, and effective DL anchored by highly skilled tackles all of the schematics and skill sets on the Eagles' defense were able to pull together to form a dominant unit. They were hard to move the ball against on normal downs and then pure murder on 3rd and long. Too bad about that offense.

Brown doesn't fit Harbaugh's profile in that he's 60 and presumably not looking to move up, but as far as results go he's a very impressive hire. And he's a college guy, so thumbs up for that.

Seems like you have a lot of well thought out reasons there to downgrade the hire. One question though? Have you watched tape on his defenses through the years you referenced? It seems the people on the east coast that have watched his defenses love them. What about injury issues? Talent deficiencies? Also, if he wasn't a great hire, wouldn't harbaugh have asked Mattison to do it for a year until he could find "THE" guy? His style was so similar to durkin's it would be almost seamless. Basically, I understand where you are coming from, but your being very nervous with not much reason to be at this point. If Jimmy wants him, hes probably pretty good.

And you don't see it. Are you completely oblivious to the fact that this hire has been universally considered great or even a grand slam? If you can't see it, maybe you're not real talented in this area and you should maybe consider deferring to virtually everyone else who do see it. I don't think you get it, you are an extreme outlier and that might speak to your insufficiency in judgement. You are entitled to your opinion, have stated it repeatedly and I just don't get the persistence? We get it, you're not crazy about the hire.

I thought of BC'S DC when the search began. I looked him up and figured he was never going to move. Harbaugh worked some serious majic!!!!

Espn saying confirmed on twitter. Cant embed tweet though BTW love this hire. Seems he will run multiple fronts, and I think you need that capability today. Too much variation with the different types of spreads out there. With our dearth of linebackers, why not experiment with some 5-2 angle? Didn't Bo run that for years against option offenses? And you can always back the end linebacker into coverage if not a run. It would be like this year's scheme, but use out depth on the dlin to hide out deficiencies at lb.

We all had our favorites for the next DC. We have no idea where this guy Brown sat in Harbaugh's own preference list. I hope it was near the top of said list. Regardless, there comes a point when Coach has to select the best of what he is likely to get (I think the Rolling Stones had a song a long time ago to that effect). In Harbaugh I trust. Let's blitz the hell out of the competition next year. GO BLUE!!!

He is a great hire. I have seen him close up at UMass and BC. Durkin was aggressive and energetic, but he will take a back seat to Brown. His 4 years at UMass were just fantastic. That defense played at a very high level and carried the team to the national championship game. I know his players loved him. I had a could of them in my class and they could not stop talking about how much it is to play for him.

While not young and ambitious, he fits JH's credo for finding guys addicted to coaching (interim baseball coach). Finding a strong leader with HC experience will also allow JH to focus more on O and ST as Brown can take some admin responsibilities in addition to DC.

What can Brown do for me?

Build a fucking wall and destroy opposing offenses.

Welcome, coach Brown to the Michigan family. Go Blue!

People underwhelmed with the hire = stereotypical Michigan arrogance that our rivals love to call us out on. How dare we settle for a DC from Boston College! Come on. Don Brown is gonna rock and is gonna make us better.

So it seems he does a great job stopping the run and isn't quite as good against the pass.  Fortunately he is coaching in the Big10 and not the Big12 and doesn't face many great QBs.  I'd much rather force an Meyer team to beat you through the air than on the ground.

I trust that Harbaugh made a good hire. I am encouraged by the success he had at BC, even if he had a couple years that weren't as good as this past year. He will have some great recruits to work with - far superior to the fellows he was working with at BC. I'm also glad that he ostensibly won't be trying to climb the ladder and will stick around for a while. I'm already stoked for next year, and we haven't even beaten Florida yet. Go Blue!

He doesn't have a lot of reason to jump ship. Harbaugh is a loyal
Guy and will reward his efforts I'm sure if he's up to standards. He is getting fast tracked under harbaugh. Last year he was a high school coach and he is now right under one of the best coaches in college football. I'm sure he is soaking it up quite a bit.

he also runs a defensive scheme that will make for a very minimal transition from Durkin for the current players. In addition to that the D-line needs to be able to stunt and slant which was one of the biggest strengths of our players this year. The Safeties need to be able to cover deep with their speed which we can check off with Thomas, Peppers, and Kinnel and the CB's need to be capable of getting their hands on the ball which Jeremy Clark and Jourdan Lewis are good at. This is an excellent fit. He is going to do a great job. I don't get the people who are whining about this. Trust Harbaugh and watch the magic happen.

I think recruiting will obviously become easier for Don now that he's at UM. He must have had some decent defensive classes at BC. I think what we should understand too is he will be in meeting rooms with a lot of other very good coaches who will IMO all feed off each other in game planning, recruiting and everything else. I think DB will become even better than he is now, now that he's at UM.

Sell their tickets for the big game. This guy hasn't even coached a play and your selling out. I'm sure I didn't see you at the past 2 Ohio games because you sell out when you don't feel good. Great "fans".
