Recruiting Pet Peeve

Feel free to chime in with your own pet peeves, but on a slow day I had to get this off my chest. The C. Pace commit summoned the quick hit analysis from everyone on the young man and just like every other single recruit the following sentence phrase was uttered all over the web. "Needs to fill out and get stronger." Well uh Duh!! Every lineman needs to get stronger. I'm pretty sure Barwis has never looked at a recruit and said damn son you are too strong let's just work on cardio. I have to say my top recruiting worthless mumbo jumbo analysis are:

1. A lineman that needs to "get stronger"-95% redshirt for a reason.
2. A lineman that needs to work on "staying lower"-Everyone wants their lineman lower and most have just overpowered their opponents their whole life.
3. A cornerback who has to work on their "technique".

A QB needs to work on his footwork, RB's need to run lower, Wr's need to work on their route running blah blah blah. Tell me something I don't know or note that he is the rare exception and is strong enough to start right away, they could save themselves 500 words of drivel.

AT the university of michigan in ann arbor we should only accept recruits who are perfect in each and every way. How else are we going to win consecutive NC's, Heismans and Fulmer Cups?

I try to stay away from analysis like this for the exact reasons that you stated. All high school players need to get stronger, improve their technique, etc. However, I try to list strengths and weaknesses. If a kid is already a good knee bender, then I'll try to say that; at the same time, if he's not, then that needs to improve.

That being said, I think it's easier for people to say "he needs to get stronger" because then you don't have to pinpoint more precise flaws. That is another reason I pay no attention to GBMW's "scouting reports" on each potential recruit, because they make approximately two comments and one is always about getting stronger.

The OP was saying (I think) that he's tired of reading stuff like "This offensive lineman needs to get stronger" because EVERY offensive lineman needs to get stronger.

Hearing/reading "Devin Gardner needs to improve his throwing motion" is not the same type of thing, because he clearly has a flaw that many other top-notch QBs don't. If that's a pet peeve of yours, then you're just SOL.

Sorry if I misinterpreted.

I have no problem with saying..."Gardner is a tremendous physical prospect, but his mechanics are so awkward that there is some worry about his development at the next level". His mechanics are so bad they are an outlier, something worth mentioning, not some general BS like you would hear with a review on Tate. Obviously Tate could use help in his mechanics just like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning continue to work on their mechanics, but his motion is generic like tons of other Qb's who you can just toss that line in on and it means nothing.

Mike Martin-DT An elite prospect that is rare in that he may be able to play right away in the interior of a BCS conference defense. He is quick at the point of attack and his wrestling background gives him great leverage. His weighlifting numbers indicate he has the neccesary strength to compete right away.

I know that he needs to get quicker, stronger and his techinique needs to be refined.

Vincent Smith-RB Unbelievable quickness and great moves make him a great fit for the offense, but his top end speed is not elite. Runs much stronger inside than his size indicates.

I know at 5' 6" 160lbs he needs to get stronger and learn to read his blocks better blah blah blah

I know it is hard to leave a lot of that stuff out, I'm just saying it is so boiler plate it has become unneccesary. I say if you have nothing worthwhile to say say nothing.

I was just watching a great comedian Jim Jeffries and his take on the "No Smoking" sign was great. "You can't smoke inside anywhere anymore, everyone knows this why do I need to look at the sign everywhere I look?? There is no sign saying "don't molest little kids". We know it already.

....they've got to write something. Those subscriptions to Rivals and Scout can be canceled by the subscriber if they don't say anything about the guy at all. So, if they can't say anything, or don't know what to say, they still need to say something, so we get boilerplate stuff....

Devin Gardner was 8 feet tall so his sidearm throw was not criticized. People were too distracted because he was a half beast/half man.

I agree with the criticism of the GBMV review of every prosepect that they need to get stronger and PAD LEVEL no SUGARCOAT, but mentioning Gardner's mechanics is legit and differentiates him from other top level qb prospects. It is THE flaw in his game, and thus can limit his upside.

I think what you really want is exactly what Brian does. He looks at measurables, upsides, ceilings, and potentially comparable players for a more comprehensive review which no SUGARCOAT, but als which gives a more in depth analysis.

I also did like Magnus' analysis of Pace at touchthebanner which was NO SUGARCOAT but very comprehensive.
