qb for 2008

I know im not the only one who is concerned with the qb situation this year but I think richie will be able to use some smoke and mirrors to cover up the lack of talent at the position.

I dont really hear anyone talking seriously about the possibility of Justin Feagin starting some time this year or maybe starting the year off at qb if he picks up the system fast enough.  Hes got great insticts and can run so why not let him have a chance? hes the BEST FIT. He can run, thats the main thing in my opinion.  im not saying hes going to be pat white at all, its just that i think rich rods offense works best when the qb is more of a run first option and it would be more of a seamless transiton than having threet back there this year then newsome or whoever the next.

your Thoughts.

Well the last time Michigan started a Freshmen QB they won the Big Ten! Of course there was that whole Braylon Edwards being awesome thing....so...no Braylon this year...could be trouble.

No question, Jim.

I'd love to see Feagin get some playing time and perform well, but I think he'll at best share snaps with Threet. I think a platoon qb scenario (maybe a poor man's Leak/Tebow... well, a very poor man's Leak/Tebow) will be our best option (no pun intended).

I'm glad you brought this issue up because I was going to post something along these lines. I seem to be in the minority who think Feagin has a real shot at winning the starting job. I'm sorry, but I wanted to throw up after watching the spring game. Threet looked terrible to me. Feagin will be raw, but hes quick and he can run. I think RR will give him a long look next month and I would be surprised if he didn't get ANY playing time in the fall. I'm looking forward to seeing how RR will utilize him b/c I think a fast, talented kid like Justin should see the field in some way.

I miss Keith Jackson.

from my friend (he works with the team) that David Cone has actually been pretty good in practice. He says Rich Rod is trying to keep that under wraps so he can surprise people with Cone when the season starts.

I hate to say it, but we may just have to play Tressel Ball to survive this year. A QB to just manage the game, strong running game, good defense, and excellent special teams. All Threet needs to do is manage the game while the team adapts to a new style of offense. This is what I expect throughout this year.

I find it curious that people have completely written Steven Threet off. He was a 4-star, Elite 11 QB, who ran a spread in high school. He's not a slouch. I'm not saying he's amazing, but a poor performance in a rainstorm in a spring game isn't an automatic indictment of his skills. It's inevitable that Feagin gets PT (they've given him a package of plays to know when he steps on campus), but this automatic dismissal of Threet, to the point that we're positive that Newsome or Beaver is our starter next year strikes me as odd.

That's how bad Threet was in 38 degree driving rain against his own defense after three weeks of practice in a brand new offense! TERRIBLE!

Actually, I did throw up a little bit in my mouth--it just didn't transfer to the ground. I hope the David Cone thing was a joke. If Threet could be the real deal (4 star, elite 11 camp, etc.) then why are a couple of walk-ons pressing him for time. I'm looking forward to seeing what Feagin can do.

Nate, Back off of the Feagin as starter idea. He will get playing time, but there is no way that he will be the starter barring a UCLA style rash of QB injuries. Threet is a skilled quarterback. If it wasn't for Mallet having signed on, he probably would have been our QB recruit that season. And why is it the automatic assumption that because RR used a very run oriented offense with Pat White, he is only able really able to use a run oriented offense? He never had a QB in the fold as talented a passer coming out of high school as Threet. From everything that RR has said, not the MSM, RR intends on adapting the offense to utilize the skills of his players. Regarding the walk-ons pressing for time, that is likely to be a motivational tactic for everyone on the team. If you are a new coach, you need to let everyone know that there are no favorites and that every position is up for grabs. That competition will push everyone further along. And guess what, if Cone or Sheridan steps up and demonstrates that they are the best QB in camp, let them play. Remeber that national championship team in 1997? The QB that year was a walk-on when he first arrived in AA.

Dex, BGH, Musket, Huss, and anyone else, avert your eyes for fear of boredom: RR has had extremely varied offenses. At Tulane, as OC, Shaun King threw for 3000+ plus yards and ran for 8+. As OC at Clemson, he had Woody Dantzler become the first QB to run for over 1000 and throw for over 2000. He threw for more yards than Chad Henne did in any single season. AT WVU, he has run more, primarily because Pat White is incapable of throwing. Remember, he had Chris Henry go for 1000+ yards averaging 20+ yards per catch. He will adapt. Really. Threet won't run too many options.

Thank you for posting that. I get so angry with the media for always assuming that we MUST be installing an offense that is a clone of the Pat White offense at WVU. RR has NEVER said that. He has only said he will install the spread and that it is a very adaptable offense. Its all of the jack-wads at ESPN and various other online sources that have implied that were are a strict spread option team and that we will force a Navarre-esque QB to run 40 times a game. Frankly, the offense that I want to see is the Capital One Bowl offense. Spread the field with fast guys and a QB that can chuck it and let it rip. (Not that Threet will be able to replicate Henne's greatest performance, but that is the direction I'd like to go.)

According to some quotes from Lloyd Carr after the Cap. One Bowl,  ( and no, I don't have the article anymore) the offense that we ran was NOT the spread that we are accustomed to seeing in college football, but, an offense very similar that which the Indianapolis Colts run. Apparently, Mike Debord had spent some time with Tom Moore learning his offense over the last couple of offseasons and was working on installing elements of it at Michigan. From what I can remember hearing on the radio, RR and Magee have spent time studying Missouri's offense under Gary Pinkel to get more ideas on how to better utilize the tight end position in their version of the spread. In that respect, I 'd say you're correct in that we will probably see more passing out of our qb than they did with Pat White at WVU, but, I still expect to see quite a bit of running out of our qb once Newsome/Beaver/Forcier arrive.

Falco is practicing with M! They are trying to get his head right after his Orange Bowl debacle! His arm is still strong from scrubbing boats! Seriously though... Cone is about as agile as his name. I say they should take a good look at T Rob at QB (dream shake anyone!). Might work? He was a QB in HS and was area MVP over one of the top rated RB's in the country. Anyone else notice in Feagin and T Rob videos the lack of passes either of them threw? Might be a cause for concern! I think Threet will start, Feagin will get PT, and they should take a look at T Rob! Just saying, how many slot receivers can you play at once and Rich Rod has to try all options at QB since that is the weakest spot on the team! Bad QB = Loosing record = non-bowl = loosing the title of having the longest streak of bowl appearances (thanks Nebraska and Bill Calahan)!

I would like to see one of two things happen. First, I love Carlos Brown as a runner, and I know that he was a quarterback in high school. Why not give him a chance in camp, especially given the talented backs that we have coming in. The other option that I like is Junior Hemingway, who also has experience at the position. If Toney Clemons has truly vaulted him on the depth chart, I think that they ought to strongly consider this. Rich Rod has to get his best athletes on the field when he can, and I think that it would be exciting to have a three wide set with Minor and one of our speedy freshman at RB and Carlos Brown at QB. What a headache that would be to stop! Having played QB at the DIII level (before earning my masters at Michigan), and having spent a training camp with the Ravens, I really believe that one has to be aggressive in everything that they do on the football field. I loved the spread attack against Florida, and a running QB would make us even tougher to play against. I would hope that we would gain a better appreciation for how to stop the spread on defense given that we will see it everyday in practice (As much as I liked Ron English, he could not solve this riddle). Further, I would like to see the team go to the 3-4 zone blitz scheme of the Pittsburgh Steelers, because I always found this the toughest to go against as a QB.

Oh how I hate Ohio State!

I had heard Lloyd refer to that offense as non-spread, and maybe I shouldn't second guess the description. But to my untrained eyes and what I understand certain elements of the spread to represent, we appeared to utilize multiple formations with 3-4 WRs, empty back fields at times, and less reliance on two TEs and two RBs -- applying pressure all over the field and "spreading" out the defense. that may not have technically been the spread offense in Lloyd's view, but I would classify it as a passing spread. And if DeBord was such a fan of the Colts attack, why did we only get to see it in the Cap 1 bowl and when we were losing by large sums of points?

Does anyone else remember early in the horror that we ran several shotgun spread formations? Maybe my memory doesn't serve me right, but I remember being in shock before such formations disappeared until the bowl.

For today, goodbye. For tomorrow, good luck. And forever, Go Blue.

I went to the Spring Coaching Clinic in April, and I didn't think Threet looked all that bad. I was actually fairly impressed watching the way the spread operated with him at the helm (that is until scrimmaging and full-contact started and the offensive line collectively played sieve). But I'm not sold that he's a complete dud for the offense.

And fwiw, I've heard the same things about Cone fro my cousin who played on the '97 team. He said it's gonna take everyone by surprise, but that Cone is slated to start, and has actually shown some good vision on running plays.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and risk all of my e-credibility with this e-prediction - but Threet will be better than Navarre 2001 edition.

Navarre 2001 edition was as bad as it gets. He single handedly made Tressel a hero is C-Bus. Even with as bad as he played, we are a Marquis Walker dropped TD from winning. I remember walking away from the stadium, loathing my ride back to Chicago, just thinking how the hell did that happen? I had not heard the cone rumors, but I'm relatively optimistic about Threet. A smart kid who apparently has picked up the offense quickly. Good arm. My thoughts on the way our QB future will turn out are Threet is the starter for at least three years, with situational substitutions from Feagins and Brown, Newsome (assuming he remains committed) redshirts and is the sit sub for a year before taking 40% - 60% of the snaps in Threet's senior season. I just don't see RR and Magee going to a purely running QB when we have the ability to attract the type of WRs we can and not spread the field vertically as well as horizontally. Ninja, I just hope the little monster in the picture takes an interest in football. He already loves tackling his older brother, so I'm taking that as a good sign.
