Here's my suggestion. Do not allow people to create diaries. Everything goes to the board. If the board post is of a certain quality or value as deemed by Brian or some panel of approved users, the board post gets promoted to a Diary.
Given that the Diaries rotate out of the box on the main page less frequently and the box is closer to the top of the page than the MGoBoard box, the items listed there should be of higher quality.
