Proudest I have ever been of a michigan sports team

Today watching our basketball team I have never been prouder of a season of sports by a Michigan team and yes that includes the football national championship. these guys had Absolutely no expectations going into the year with the 10-22 record which is the equivalent of 3-9 in football in mathematical percentage and what did they do they got to the tournament for the first time in 10 years. This has been a great season and it gives me hope and optimism for not only future basketball teams so that we can get back to national prominence but also for our football team to see if they can do the same thing as our basketball program. Maybe it is just the excitement of the tournament bid but right now i am happier to call myself a Michigan fan than any other time in my life. Also does the athletic department sell tickets to the public for the game or would they only do that if you were part of the victors club?

We've always had a reputation of amassing great players in football only to field generally disappointing teams. Hopefully, we see a similar shift in football with a new regime. But this is really the first time in recent memory any Michigan team has actually exceeded expectations. It's nice being on the other end for once.

So you were the guy that had Michigan 11-0 heading into the OSU game in 06 coming off the 7-5 debacle and of course everyone had their Rose Bowl tickets in 04 when we trotted out a true freshman at qb. Michigan never meets expectations.

The'04 team was established at virtually every position except QB. Henne didn't have to do much that year. I do agree that they exceeded expectations that year, but it's not like it was some great accomplishment. The '06 team lost badly to USC in the Rose Bowl. You have to look at the season as a whole. '06 was totally wiped out by the deflating USC loss (you can't count ND as a good win that year; they didn't beat anyone), along with the Ohio St. loss. The '06 team was like the economy in '06. Everyone thought it was growing when in fact there was a huge, unsustainable bubble. The first game of '07 we lost to App. St. and that was the beginning of the end for Lloyd Carr.

Granted, Michigan was clearly the underdog against Vince Young's team and they gave them a great game. But still, with football, to call a season overachieving, I would have to say there must be at least one win in the ND/OSU/Bowl game slate of games.

michigan football is ALWAYS expected to at least COMPETE for the big 10 championship. the 7-5 season was a huge dissappointment and WELL below expectations. furthermore, we finished the season 11-2, which is pretty mediocre if you're Ohio State, Florida, or LSU.

So i guess YOU'RE the guy who was content to lose 5 games every other season as long as we started the next one 6-0.

dont' even compare M going to the tourney this year to M going to the rose bowl and getting THUMPED in 2006.

B) As the folks at the LAW always proclaim, "opinions should have some basis in fact".

C) Just making the NCAA tourney is a great achievement for this M Bball team, but the OP said "Proudest I have ever been...". That is simply hyperbole (IMO).

D) Or perhaps the OP has a different definition of proud than what I do.

It really is great to see us clinch the tourney bid on the back of DeShawn Sims. Think of what he's gone through here. He had been on campus only a couple of months when his younger brother was shot to death. Then he rode the pine as a freshman behind some underachieving upperclassmen. This was followed by another agonizing near-miss of the NCAA tournament, followed in turn by the firing of Tommy Amaker, who had recruited Sims for years, followed by the hiring of a complete stranger (Beilein). Then in Beilein's first season, the team went 10-22, capped off by the unexpected transfer of its starting center (Udoh). Despite all that, Sims kept a level head, bought into Beilein's system, and he's now being rewarded for it.
