Actual News

Injuries:

  • "Floyd won't play as much this spring because he's coming off surgery."
  • "Woolfolk is getting better, but at the same time it wouldn't be very intelligent of us to have him doing a whole lot out there."
  • "Kenny Demens will be a little bit limited because of the shoulder surgery he had."
  • "Teric Jones is out for sure. Mike Shaw broke his hand the other day, falling on the turf and trying to catch himself. So he'll be limited on Saturday for sure," but will play with a cast after that. Teric Jones's injury is a "significant" one to his knee. It's too early to say whether he'll be out or limited in the fall.

Position changes: Will Campbell will play 3-tech. He's bounced back and forth, but has done a good job with conditioning this spring. "It would be too early for us to make any [other] changes, because we don't know what they can do anyway, to be honest with you."

There will be no update on Devin Gardner's redshirt status until his fourth year. (So stop asking about it).

MSU and OSU countdown clocks: "Those are pretty important games. And we want to think about those important games every day." Some outside his office, some down by the locker room "That's it for now, I think."

Scholarship numbers: "We should be at 84, I believe."

General Spring Notes

Spring game - "Wait until we get there and see. We'd like to play a true, competitive 'seniors draft the teams' Spring Game." Not sure if there's enough depth to do that.

Spring success: "It won't ever be a success," because here's always something that they can do better. Need to improve on field, in classroom, in community. Installation of offense, etc.

There will be a few practices open to the media this spring, but none have been determined yet.

Excited to get started. Only seen guys in conditioning and the weight room so far. Still won't see them with pads until after Monday - that's when they'll know what they have. 3 non-padded practices, including first 2 and the day of the coaches' clinic.

"We're gonna hit a lot. And then we'll see where we're at as a team." Have to get a look at the team, and at the players. If guys prove themselves, they might not hit as much to avoid injury.

"Spring is always important because I think it gives you an ability to have competition. The one thing you'll find out is this is competition on a daily basis." Even the guys who have already played need to continue to compete because other guys will step up.

First things to evaluate: attitude, effort, toughness, accountability. Everything starts with mentality and toughness. A lot of unknowns "Try and create an environment that's going to have toughness with it and effort with it and a mentality of how you play." Need to develop guys from a fundamental and technique standpoint.

Will go back to what he's done at last two stops when coming in. "It all starts there. And it's worked." Players need to learn how the practice runs, etc.

Strength and conditioning is not only to develop physically, but also develop an attitude: "No one's going to beat us. And it's an earned attitude."

The Team (The Team, The Team)

Hasn't watched a lot of film on past performances. Doesn't want preconceived notions of how guys play. You don't know how they've been coached, so you don't want a bad impression in case the coaching wasn't up to par.

Denard - "He's a kid who loves to play the game, he's hungry to play the game. There's some things at that position, because of the offense, he's going to have to get comfortable in." Mostly under center, not exclusively. Both QBs have done a good job learning the intricacies of the new O, but they still have a lot to learn. "Taking a snap from center, I know they've worked on that little bit out their on their own." Borges has enough experience to properly manage what the QBs do.

RBs - "I think right now, we've gotta see who can run the power play. Get downhill and do the things we want them to do as an offensive player." Haven't used TEs and fullbacks as much, need to develop them as well.

OL - Molk has played a lot of football, is a good player. He'll start on the first play of the spring, along with most of the guys who have played a lot. If they don't play with toughness and effort "they can always move down." Funk will find top 7-8 guys.

Some positions have guys who have played a lot of football, such as Mike Martin at DT. Need to continue improving his game even though he's played.

Hoke will coach a lot of special teams with Coach Ferrigno. Will also coach the Sam 'backer during some parts of practice. Wants to be hands-on, and can also offer something there.

Woolfolk position - "I can't answer that position question] for sure. Until we get to really watch him run around and what he can do." Right now, likely stays at corner. "Safeties, we're not bad. Corners, not as good" depth-wise.

FG kicking - "Part of it is a confidence level that guys have or don't have." Getting more reps with the expectation of doing it perfectly will help.

Etc.

Chris Barnett's relationship with Baron Flenory - "I'm not going to get into a kid's personal life. If he wants to talk about it, he can talk about it." He was mature about how he visited and went through the recruiting process.

Future recruiting: "We're making progress. We've had quite a few kids on unofficials, and will continue through the spring."

Helmet stickers - hasn't given it any further thought.

Not worried about finalizing his contract.

Relationships with players - "I think it's always evolving." It's been positive, and he has very good communication with them.

Oversigning: "I think the Big Ten's policy is probably one that everyone should be able to live with." Can't speak for other coaches, or claim they mislead kids.

The current scoreboards will be fully taken down within the next week or so, and the Athletic Department will announce around that time which company has been awarded the contract for the new scoreboards. Once they make that announcement, artist's renderings will be available. The scoreboards will be completed in August.

Because that's how it works. Michigan send documentation to the Big Ten now, and when it's time to determine whether or not he'll get a fifth year of eligibility, the conference turns over that documentation to the NCAA and they determine whether he's granted the 5th year.

That's just how it works.

I love this time of year We are back in NCAA tournament. college footballl is back. I cant wait to see or hear the updates at spring practice....I have a feeling Hopkins Tousant(i may have spelled it wrong) will become the feature back just because there big and have a big 10 running style.

Stickers belong on helmets that get stickers. They do not belong on helmets that don't have them.

It's easy enough to tell which schools fall into which categories. School in Columbus = OK. Michigan = not OK.

Also, not just for wins. We know the team's record. Award them for big plays or whatever. But again, not at Michigan.

i'm all for anything that helps motivate our players to play better.... If they want stickers so they can have competition between each other with sticker's than so be it... if the count down clock reminds them what they are working for than so be it... if hoke wants girls jumping on trampolines in the locker room after a big win than so be it.

I love the good news about Big Will. We really need him to step it up this year and contribute. I am getting pumped for Spring Practice to start and then finally the Spring Game.

I don't know how much I agree with this.  I clearly have no coaching credentials, but how could there be no value in seeing how players perform in games vs competition?  I get that you can't judge a player b/c of the coaching before him, but you could identify some bad habits, or really diagnose what went wrong on each play and throughout the season.

Also, they'll eventually have to start studying film of the opposition, right?

If you didn't know who was talking could you tell the difference between Rich and Hoke in that interview?   Same stuff every year.  It's not good or bad, but I wish the coaches were allowed to show some personality.  I know why they don't, because a Vince Lombardi joke turns into national news.  Oh well.

Does anyone know what really the rules are for contact and what really happens?  2 items stand out.

1. Hoke has only seen the kids working out.-  I thought the coaches could not watch them work out in the offseason.

2. Hoke said the QB's have done a good job of learning the offense-  Again how does he know if they have limited contact?

I think coaches can watch, but there are limitations on contact. I think the last staff was reviewing attendance rosters or something like that.

I'm also unclear on whether or not a player can "seek out a coach" for help and advice while "independently" doing drills with teammates.

"Safeties, we're not bad. Corners, not as good" depth-wise.

I wonder who he has penciled into the free safety position other than Vinopal and Carter. Carvin and Marvin?

IIRC, Van Slyke was 2nd string behind Emilien in the early Fall.  Vlad was injured for a short time, Van Slyke stepped in but broke his clavicle, and Cam Gordon moved up and impressed.  Vinopal was probably pushing 2nd string before Vlad even very early in the season, leading to the transfer.  But Van Slyke offers non-DOOM depth if nothing else.

Looking forward to the spring game.  It will be interesting to see who emerges at the starting RB since it sounds like the focus is more on "big" runners.  I would hope that Smith gets a chance because I still think he is the most complete back on the team, but I'm guessing Hopkins winds up getting a fair number of carries if he shows the expected maturation.

I am not sure that Smith is the most complete back.  He is definitely the best blocker of the bunch.  He is also surprisingly good as a receiving threat (although less so when receiving in the backfield).

My biggest issue with Smith is that, while he can run through open holes, he really lacks the ability to move the pile, create openings, make people miss or really do the whole "running" part of being a running back.  Don't get me wrong - I really like his heart and his toughness (and Hoke may, as well), but I don't think that a guy who is neither big or fast can be considered a complete back, unless we are talking about someone with a Mike Hart ability to consistently grind out yards.

I find it funny how excited I am about seeing this content, despite the complete lack of news.  The only take-aways from this are:

1.  RBs - Hoke is looking primarily for a downhill runner.  Nothing new, but " we've gotta see who can run the power play" is the clearest statement on the issue yet.  This is obviously not good for V. Smith, and with Shaw looking likely to be limited in Spring ball, not good for him, either.  If I were a betting man - and I am - I would have my $$ on Hopkins and Cox.  I didn't include Fitz because I have no proof that he actually exists.  Some think that Rawls has a shot, but with Hopkins ahead of him, why not give the kid a year to redshirt and get even bigger.

2.  Denard - again, nice to have some firm statements.  Happy to hear that they will mix in some gun.  I still think that Denard - once he gets the hang of it - is going to be nasty from under center.  His ISQBDs - if deployed properly - will be deadly.  And, he will be forced to scramble more - something that he often avoided - making him even harder to contain.  It was this lack of scramble that hurt him late in the season, as it would have made gameplanning for him tougher.

3.  Special teams - Hoke will be personally involved, along with Lou Ferigno.  What more can I say.

RBs - "I think right now, we've gotta see who can run the power play. Get downhill and do the things we want them to do as an offensive player."

Mike Cox will start at RB in the Fall.

You might be rights on that.  As I said in my post (right above your post), I think that the Power Run will really put smith and shaw a few steps behind, so it is either Cox or Hopkins.  Cox was always a player that I thought could emerge as a stud, but he seemed to be permanently in RR's dog house.  Maybe a coaching change will do him good.

Tim

March 15th, 2011 at 4:20 PM ^

No he won't. Read last week's post. Fred Jackson essentially says that Cox is unwilling or unable to do the "little things" (learning the offense, picking up blitzers) that will allow him to see the field.

Maybe the light will flip on, but it certainly doesn't sound like Fred thinks it will happen by this fall.

WolvinLA2

March 15th, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^

Yeah, that explains a lot then.

I still think Rawls will get some solid PT.  That guys is big, tough and fast.  I bet he ends up being one of the biggest steals we've had in recruiting in a while.  Having a backfield consisting of something like Hopkins, Toussaint and Rawls will be a lot like what Wisconsin had last fall.  And they didn't have any Dilithium at QB.

The OSU and MSU countdown clocks are the first things you see when you go into Schembechler Hall after the lobby area.  The other set is right outside of Coach Hoke's office.  The clocks are countdowns to the exact second.

The count by the locker room is a day count, the number of days its been since Michigan has beat OSU.
