Postgame Presser Notes: Ohio State Comment Count

Rich Rodriguez

"I felt good first quarter, first half. Really we moved the football, just didn't finish drives. Poor execution at critical times when we needed to. They made some plays, and to win a game like this you have to finish more drives." Worst game of the year finishing.

Denard - "I don't know what play it was, but he dislocated a couple fingers on his left hand." Third and fourth fingers. He likes to grip it with his left hand when he runs, so loss of feeling was a problem. Denard lobbied to go back in initially. He went in one drive, then realized he couldn't play like he wanted to.

"We had some drops, which hurt us." Denard was pretty sharp, but the window is smaller against very good coverage. Guys have to make some difficult catches. WR corps was a little thin today without Hemingway, and with Stokes going out. "You have to make those kind of plays to beat a good football team."

Tate's experienced enough to make plays. Ohio State's defense is good: "They're athletic defensively." They made plays in the passing game, breaking up passes "I mean some bang-bang stuff." In the first half, it was M shooting themselves in the foot. "Some of that was them, but a lot of that was us too."

Hagerup - "He violated a team rule, so he didn't make the trip."

Early in the game, the D was hitting the right gaps, tackling well. That faded later in the game. "That's just my view from the sidelines."

Kickoff return touchdown: "Yeah, it was awful." Didn't get the kick they wanted (maybe because of wind), and the coverage wasn't there.

Postgame speech: "I don't know if I need to share it with everybody. We talked about some things. I don't need to share everything with y'all."

"I'm ticked. What you want me to go jump out there and hold hands with all the Buckeye fans and sing kumbaya? I wish we'd played better." Will be mad for a while, then move on to the next one. "This will sting for a little bit, which it should. We'll think about it a little bit, which we should. But you can't replay it, unfortunately."

Has the defense improved over the course of the season? "Some. Not as much as I'd like." It's not at a Michigan level. He can't chew out freshmen, because they're going to make the mistakes. Need them to play like 3rd-4th year guys. "They are what they are, and they'll grow from this."

Job security: "I'm going to work tomorrow as always." No outside chatter will change how they work. "I took this job to make us the best program in America. And sometimes it takes a little longer to mold the program the way you wanted to mold it. Sometimes you get more obstacles in your way," but he's not deterred from the goal. "I think the worst is behind us. I know it is." People are entitled to their own opinions, but the coaches, players, and people in the program feel confident it will happen. "It's been a lot slower than our fans wanted, I don't blame them for that."

On outside perspective of the program's progress: "Sometimes people see what they want to see... I know what I see, and I'm in the middle of it. Maybe some people don't want me to have success. I would think most people that follow Michigan and love Michigan do, because they love our school and love our program."

Progress is being made. Rich sees it in practice, and can see the positive attitude. Likes how recruiting has gone last 2 years and is going this year.

Rich and his coaches aren't used to this either: "We're used to playing in Championships and BCS bowls, and all that, too. It's been frustrating as heck. But I'm not deterred, because I know where I'm at, I know what we're doing, I know what we have in the program, and I know what we need to do to fix it." He will evaluate everything with the program to improve it whenever he can.

Will have to watch film to see why turnovers have gotten worse over the course of the year. The team isn't at the point where they can overcome that.

"A couple personal fouls. The stuff after a play is silly. There's no need for extracurricular stuff after the play. there's enough intensity during the whistle." They haven't had many pre-snap penalties this year, but had an important today taking back a 20-yard gain because a true freshman was lined up wrong.

Team meeting Monday, talking about bowl preparation. The guys have their finals in a couple weeks. They'll lift a bit to stay in shape. Rich has a preliminary bowl practice schedule in mind, but won't finalize it until they know date and location of bowl game.

OSU is a good team, Michigan needed to take advantage of opportunities if they wanted to win, and it didn't happen.

On his interception: Knew a shot to the goal line was coming. "I just broke on the ball. I thought I might have a chance to return it, but didn't make it far enough."

Do they worry about Rodriguez's job security? "Not at all. We play for each other."

Ryan Van Bergen

"It obviously hurts a little more when it's Ohio State." They wanted to send the seniors out with a win. "You gotta take personal responsibility, everybody has to be accountable. Nobody played their best game for us today." Disappointing for today, but promising for the future and sending the seniors out with a bowl game.

Doesn't know why they didn't play well. Mentality and game pan were good. Mental mistakes "kinda plagued us a little bit in the second half of the season, and that definitely was evident today."

"Focus on controlling what we can control," try to execute, not worry about their coach's job status.

Used more of a 4-man front to get some size up against their line. Gave the OSU OL some problems, "I think we made some plays in the front 7 to stop that run... For the most part, we were pretty stout in the run game."

It went pretty much according to script.  We needed to have a lot of things break in our favor to be competitive, and none of them did.

It hurts like hell to go through these past three years, but it there really wasn't any way to avoid it.  Young players gained a lot of experience at least, and will be better next year.

On to the bowl and 2011, and Go Blue!

Thanks, I like RR and I love this team even though the D SUCKS!! They will be better next year.

RR handling of the Hagerup situation, reveals a guy not worried about his job security and willing to do the right thing, even on eve of The Game. Kudos to RR. Bobby Bowden was willing to do the opposite on the eve of his MNC game, in regards to his kicker Sebastian Janikowski. I will take RR and his actions every time.

One or two mistakes is all it took for the game to break open, unfortunately. OSU will be young and Michigan will have all their tools back next season, not to mention the game will be in Ann Arbor. You have to give RR one more shot under those circumstances.

Spielman can say any goddamned thing he wants to.  It was really freaking brilliant for him to deduce that Michigan's defense is bad, and a big reason that it is so bad is that they are completely lacking in d-back bodies.  Yes, they are playing guys who could and would be freshman redshirts under any other circumstances, on any other Michigan team.

But Spielman called out Jordan Kovacs, virtually by name.  And Jordan Kovacs stepped up.

So yeah; go fuck yourself and you can fuck Mr. Spielman too while you're at it.

This is like when Chris Spielman said that, other than Mike Martin, our defense would make nice subs at Indiana, and irate posters were all over the message board saying "nuh-uh, Mouton, Van Bergeren and Demens could start for Indiana!"  As though showing that we have four or five guys that could start at Indiana refutes his point about the lack of talent on our defense.

Spielman said that, while he admires Kovacs and that the kid plays tough, Michigan's defense should not have former walk-ons of Kovacs' ability playing starting roles, and we will not get where we want to be until we have more talented athletes on the defense.  As much as we may like Kovacs, or any of the other defenders who have heart but lack natural ability, this is indisputably correct.  So Kovacs had an interception today, on a day when we got slaughtered by 30.  Great.  This doesn't refute Spielman's point one iota, but grab for victories where you can find them, I guess.

Not knocking the kid cause he's working his ass off but on Herron's 89 yd run when Vinopal bounced off of Herron and didn't even slow Herron I thought of Speilman.  You need someone out there who makes the tackle and holds it to a 6-8 yd gain.  Instead UM has a 5'10" 185 lb guy who doesn't even slow Herron down.

on pointing out the obvious facts.

At this point it is clear that youth is the weakness.  The intensity was there in the beginning, the formations and the coach play decisions were good, the execution of freshman and sophomores against seniors was what it was.

This season more than any has convinced me of the edge that recruiting talent and having an experienced two deep brings.

I'm all in for giving RR one more year, though think it will be more beneficial if that comes with a new defensive staff.  This game hurt, but one game does not a season make when you're dealing with something as huge as a coaching change.  If they keep suckin' it up next year, then it's probably time to part ways with RR.  If that happens I hope the new coach brings in a spread offensive coordinator and staff, which I believe will make not only the transition much smoother, but allow us to keep most of our recruits/players, on top of being my personal preference for offensive style.

I think most reasonable people expected 7-5. Offense turned out to be much better than expected, defense turned out Much worse. Expectations for future: win bowl game 2011--9 wins ideally. 8 acceptable if a game is literally stolen by some freak occurrence. . Must beat MSU or OSU. Is that reasonable?

jatlasb

November 27th, 2010 at 7:41 PM ^

Okay...when did an 8 win season become a bad thing? Considering the team is still in what could only be described as "rebuilding mode" after pretty much every good player not named "Graham" left in 2008... I'm not saying that wouldn't be a disappointment, I'm saying if they get a game completely robbed from them by some weird circumstances, like a surefire td being denied or whatever. If something that is clearly outside the teams control (entire first string offense struck by lightning) costs them a win I wouldn't hold it against them. But oh, I forgot, every season that isn't 13-0 and a national championship is UNACCEPTABLE regardless of context.

November 27th, 2010 at 7:51 PM ^

Why is it when someone says 8-4 is unacceptable, the common response is something along the lines of "But oh, I forgot, every season that isn't 13-0 and a national championship is unnacceptable...."

There are alternatives to 8-4 and 13-0.  Perhaps 9-3, or 10-2, or maybe even 11-1.  Those would all be reasonable, don't you think?

jatlasb

November 27th, 2010 at 8:05 PM ^

I do, in fact. A 9-3 season or a 10-2 would be awesome. The reason for the hyperbole is that I was trying to counter the snide "are you high" comment with counter-snide of my own. I was hoping that the two snide comments would undergo the fabled snide/counter snide interactions, annihilating each other and converting their masses to awesome.

There's NO way a one game improvement doesn't result in cleaning house. Frankly, after nothing for 3 years, I think 9 would be a big disappointment. But yeah, I don't think want a time that never existed where we go 13-0 every year to return. They just want a world where 7-8 wins suck and is a huge disappointment to return. Rather than it being something to hope for.

I expected 7-5 and a bowl game this season, which has been met, and like you said some great progress with the Offense.  All the other areas of the team are pretty much a joke, however (except of course Hagerup has come on and been very good).  I love the heart of the players on D, but  we for sure need to recruit some more talented players, and also it just seems like something is off with the coaching.  Despite the reasonable points about how much youth is playing, I still think a better D staff could get much more out of the same players (just my thoughts).

All in all with our schedule next season I think 9+ wins with a much less sloppy team overall is needed in order for us to keep RR.  Honestly I really hope it works out with him as I'd like to see him vindicated against all the haters.  But, I won't be heart broken if we look exactly the same next year and decide a change is in order.  And again, I'd really like to see a defensive minded proven HC with a proven spread offensive staff.  Hopefully, though, we won't have to worry about that.

Exactly.   I don't agree about MSU and Iowa, those games were closer than score indicated, IMO.

We were crushed by WI and OSU.  Wasn't competitive.  That's the biggest worry.  We're not just not winning these games, we're really obviously lacking the talent to hang with OSU and Wisconsin.

jatlasb

November 28th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^

From the standpoint of my fandom, no, its never acceptable to lose to MSU or OSU. but you have to distance yourself from your raging inner fanboy and look at the real world. I mean, of course it isnt okay to be 0-4 against OSU, but hell, we're *already* 0-4 against osu. The last time we beset the buckeyes was what, 2003? I'm not talking about what my "inner fan" wants. I'm talking about what are *reasonable* minimum expectations of progress that RR has to make to keep his job for 2012, (assuming he has it in 2011). .

This was as ugly as it gets and hurts just as much. I was pretty damn confident that RR would be coming back next year, before this one, now Im just nervous for the program. We'll see what DB does in Jan. until then, it looks like thats pretty much all we'll have to talk about over the next month. Im sure thats not going to get old. Hey, maybe we'll get a "Hello" or two to ease the pain.

victors2000

The team is 7-5; they team played hard all season, they never gave up. Three of those losses came to teams with a combined record that is soon to be 33-3. The coach has never wondered if he has lost control of the team. And, for the umpteenth time, it is a young team. It is frustrating, but this is nowhere near as ugly as it gets.

mwburner26

November 28th, 2010 at 2:36 AM ^

Yeah I was definitely referring to the game, not the season as a whole. I've been in support of this Team (and yes that includes RR) all year and will continue doing so as long as there is someone running out that tunnel with the winged helmet on. But I say that game was as ugly as it gets because we simply played poorly against a very good team and in doing so looked much worse than the score would indicate, not to mention how it hurts RR case to stick around. Again going into the game I figured RR was safe for another year and that it would take a serious beating before DB would feel any type of real pressure from the school, alum, etc. to get rid of him. Well that looked like a serious beating to anyone who wants RR gone. I just hope this team can regroup and figure things out because if this happens in the bowl game he really might be done.

Like he said...do some haters really think the guy doesn't care how the program is viewed currently?? Dude was one game away from a MNC chance and he lost to Pitt. The amount of people that think he doesn't know what he is doing is absolutely hilarious.

Lets just be honest...does anyone ever pay attention to the starting lineups on TV...besides the front 6 and even then you can see soph and RS soph on it...this team is full of 18 yr old kids lining up against 22 yr old men who have been through the wars for the last 4 yrs. There is a reason they get wore down late in games. Case in point Vinopal in the open field on the 89 yd run..had Herron wrapped up and he just powered through a young kid who was tackling 175 lb high schoolers a year ago.

While I know the buck stops at the heach coach the reality is the guy has been snakebit when it comes to the secondary. If we lived in a perfect world your starting secondary this year is:

CB: Warren/Cissoko

Safeties: Woolfolk and Kovacs/Turner

That improves this team by leaps and bounds on the D side of the ball. Fact is stuff happened and it just didn't work that way. You can say RR did not recruit to our biggest weakness under Carr and that was the secondary.

The LB corp is well we will see next year with Jones, Bell, MRob and company how those RR guys pan out.

I say give him one more year with the guys he brought in on D and see what happens. I mean you never know what could happen with a secondary starting the same guys from one year ago.

The key to our failure happened during/after the 2009 season.  At the start of 2009, we had the potential to return Warren, Cissoko, Witty, Turner, Emilien, Woolfolk, Floyd and Williams (8 guys) to the 2010 team.  Our DB roster should/could have looked like this: 2 Sr, 2 Jr, 4 So and 1 RFr (8 guys + whatever frosh we added).  Of those 8 potential returning players, 1 played in 2010 (Floyd saw I think 5 or 6 games).  RR did his job and recruited 7 freshmen in the offseason but how could anyone foresee losing 7 potential returning players in a little over a year and a half (Feb of 09 – Aug 10).  Could RR have done something to prevent some of this from happening?

A few things.

Kenny Demens.  He is going to be a solid player, I am impressed with his tackling and instincts.

Where was the creativity on the offense today?  It's the biggest game of the year and we come out doing the same predictable plays we've done all year.  In a game like this where you need to score as many times as possible, why not throw a flea flicker or reverse.  And for the love, WHY OH WHY is Stonum not returning kicks and punts anymore?  He was clearly our best returner.

Blue in Yarmouth

November 28th, 2010 at 10:52 AM ^

I'll give you that, but he was not nearly the problem on offense. What game were you watching? I have never seen so many well to perfectly thrown balls dropped by players of this calibre. I think Stonum and Roundtree forgot their contact lenses.

Seriously, other than the fumble where on earth did Denard fall short of your expectations in this game?
