Not pleased with the way they played, but happy with the win. All three phases of the game had letdowns. "As quiet a winning locker room as you'll ever see."

"I can promise our guys will look at the film, coaches will look at the film, I'll watch everything on all three phases." "Defensively we thought they would pressure us a little bit" so Denard couldn't run. Has to talk to D coaches to see if UMass did surprising stuff. "They're pretty good up front."

Nobody was injured outside of Banks, and his injury isn't serious.

Take what they give us. Stonum made plays, Shaw stepped up. Not worried about starters being tired because they only played 56 snaps.

3-4, 4-3 shift "We saw the same thing last week." Switch just about every other snap. "That's kinda part for the course. Our guys have seen that." UMass adjusted at the second half. UMass played a lot of cover-0, gave up lots of 1-on-1 opportunities. Maybe Michigan should have taken even more deep shots. Wanted to run to give the D a break.

"[Denard] was pretty sharp with his eyes and his decisions." Ball-handling was the problem. Denard not as sharp as he was first couple weeks. "Amost like a first-game feel." Execution wasn't clean. Denard made some great throws, a few good runs. "We didn't run him as much. We didn't want to." Shaw stepped up.

Offense is QB-centered, he has to run sometimes. More designed RB runs today to give him some relief. Shaw - "runs hard, got great speed, used his vision well today." Team's biggest homerun threat.

Lewan - "we should have played Ricky Barnum too some." They'll decide if a few more guys should have gotten onto the field. "If we'd have payed better, we could have played more guys. Didn't happen, so we've gotta play we've we've got to to win the game."

"We have some warts, that's still out there. Let's not pretend that we're the 1985 Chicago Bears." Have to play with passion, intensity, and intelligence in all 3 phases, but especially on D. Didn't get better today, but the guys know without being told that they need to work hard this week.

Some of D struggles lack of execution - missed tackles, losing contain, "there's a lot of things that we've gotta clean up, and everybody knows that." Going against a different scheme this week, made some mistakes. Has to watch film to compare where the breakdowns were. Losing contain to our left was bad, because they knew it would happen coming in. Lost contain 5-6 times at least.

Kovacs strip - scored quickly, then got the turnover for 2 quick scores. Momentum with the ball in third quarter. Didn't happen to shut them down and put the game out of reach. "They played well." Went into the UMass locker room to tell them that.

Special teams - The return game was OK, a couple times Darryl almost broke one. Missed only field goal, kick coverage needs to improve. Kickers make them in practice. Will just dropped the snap on the block.

Thought Seth Broekhuizen kicked better for kickoffs. Placekicking - "We had a student body tryout. Any student out there... we'll have another tryout for you.

Darryl Stonum

"You never know" how many points you'll need to win. UMass is a good team. "They gave us a run for our money." The D carried the offense last week, so in the team concept, it's time to pay it back a bit. "They'll make some corrections, and so will we."

Came out slow, but for the most part did a good job executing. Offense knew they were shooting themselves in the foot early, just started executing better.

"On that play, I'm usually a backside outlet" on the long TD reception. Omameh and Grady did a good job blocking to open the hole.

Last time he scored 2 TDs back-to-back like in the second quarter was in high school. Personal breakthrough game? "With all the talent we have at receiver, you never know who's gonna be the hot hand for the week." Just his job to show the coaches he's capable of making plays. He and Roy joking about who would be the guy this week.

On his long (non-TD) reception "Denard fakes the sprintout, and we knew that the whole defense is gona key to his running." Just had to run past the cornerback.

Denard throwing: "His accuracy and his... total quartebrack, just being a pocket passer." His accuracy has improved. Puts the ball where the receivers can run away from the defender after the catch.

Michael Shaw

"[Denard] told me on the sideline, mid second quarter, that he was gonna start giving up the ball a lot more." Denard's been getting yards because Ds are keying Shaw instead of Denard. Today was different. Other guys need to step up so the offense can click without Denard having to do it all. "We have playmakers, but now we're coming into our own as an offense."

There's no way to tell from film who the end is keying on. Had an idea they'd try to contain Denard (like ND, which didn't work out for them).

He was trying to hit the hole fast early in the game, but the DL was 2-gapping the OL, so he tried to hesitate on his long TD run to make sure he had the right read.

Offensive pressure opposite that D? "We added pressure to ourselves." Held each other up each of the past two weeks. Denard kept the team poised when they were down 17-7.

Special team struggles? "I don't really expect our kicking game to miss kicks. We all have faith in all of our teammates." Offense's job is to score TDs and not have to rely on those guys as much. "Those 40-yard kicks can turn into 2-yard extra points."

Jordan Kovacs

UMass held onto the ball well. Defense didn't do their job to get them off the field. "You've gotta give them a lot of credit they're a very good team. Maybe they caught us off guard." "They've got some big offensive linemen, I know it's nothing like we'll see in the Big Ten."

"We're happy that we didn't lose, but we're not satisfied with the way that we played defensively." Defensive play overall: "Clearly it's disappointing." Better to have that happen in a game that they still win, instead of have them cause a loss.

On his strip and recovery: "At that point in the game, they had a lot of momentum." Knew his team needed a big play, noticed the guy was carrying the ball low.

Losing contain - "Tough to see defensively. I'll admit that it happened to me a couple times." Need to get back to fundamentals and responsibilities. Would have been a different story if everyone executed well.

Mike Martin

"We never underestimate a team. We're not good enough to just walk in and get a victory." The team just has to play hard. "I think a focus that we needed" was lacking. Had a good week of practice. Need to get back to fundamentals this week in practice. "Michigan came out with a victory, and that's all we can ask for."

UMass offensive line - "They had a good line. They were smart and they did a good job with positioning their bodies a certain way." Called some plays to keep UMass unbalanced, disguise some things. They did a god job reacting.

Fighting through doubles. "It feels good as a nose guard because you don't get a lot of chances to be free." If you hit a rock over and over and it breaks after 100th hit, it's not the 100th hit that breaks the rock, it was the 99 before that.

Fewer sacks - "We've just gotta keep playing hard." Last year, it took BG 4 games to get a sack, there's still a lot of football to play.

Cam Gordon int/fumble "That's tough. I think it's just one of those freak things." The way it happened, they didn't complain and just went to go play the next play.

The team has done a good job not getting worried, pointing finger. "That's what we did in the past and we've done a better job this year in that aspect." Just do your job to win.

Coach went over a few things on the drawing board, and the halftime message was to go out and play as hard as they can for the final 30 minutes.

Make sure guys buckle down and get ready for Bowling Green.

Denard Robinson

UMass is a good team on both sides of the ball. "We watched film and knew they was pretty good." The team just came out sluggish. Can't come out sluggish and expect to win. That was the lesson they learned today. Have to re-focus to make sure this doesn't happen next week.

"We just had to focus and everybody had to play as one, play as a team, play smart" when they were down 10. Team started slow, and everyone needed to whole team to play.

"They really didn't contain me, I guess. That's why Shaw had a great game." UMass made that decision, not Denard. "It was great to have [Shaw] running the ball like that." All the running backs are threats, they just needed a D to give them a chance to break out.

"I'm all in for Michigan. Whatever it takes to win. We winning for Michigam, we're not just winning for me." Doesn't care about his stats if they win. "If we get a W, that's good." Nobody's perfect. He knew he wasn't going to go a whole season without throwing a pick. "We're gonna face adversity the whole season."

He thought he would play the whole game, until the coaches tell him otherwise.

On the long Stonum touchdown, "It was designed, he read the blocks perfectly, he made one guy miss, and got going." It was a big shift in momentum before the half. The offense just had to make the plays happen. Everybody knew they had to step it up.

"We've moved from that Notre Dame game, that was last week. And will move on from UMass after we watch film tomorrow to Bowling Green."

Look around the country. Virginia Tech won today but was teetering again in the first half against a perceived lesser opponent. Oklahoma is the darling of many pundits and they looked pretty average in 2 of 3 home games.  Almost lost to two unranked teams.

Florida looks like a pretty blah version too. I'll even bet the Alabama fans are poking holes in the Duke game today. Everybody has issues and cause for concern.

College football is as competitive as it's ever been.

We got a lot out of this game today that will help us. Big Ten teams will overload against Denard and dare him with man coverage on the perimeter. They also will pound our ends on defense to set up the play action.

Everyone all scared of Iowa now?  We played them to a standstill last year on their homefield.  Wisky? They got outplayed today by an unranked team. Penn State? 24 points with a freshman quarterback against a MAC team. And don't give me Michigan State.

We can beat anybody on our schedule or lose to anyone.  We are very very good in one of the three phases. I'll bet there aren't many teams on our schedule left who can correctly say that.

Michigan is 3-0, reasonably healthy, and now bloodied up a little. We don't have Woodley, Graham or Woodson running around out there but we'll be better and more prepared the next time. And you'll see better effort.  I'd say were batting 1000 in a lot of ways.

If the players had to earn their wings before the season, can they lose them for disgusting performances during the season? If so, then most of the defense should be starting against BG with plain blue helmets. I can understand being beaten by superior talent, stradegy; but today was not such a day. Time for Rich Rod to remind the boys who is boss, where they play, and why such crap will not be tolerated in the future.

...our defense's potential is suspect at best, I'll take exactly what they've given us with open arms.  No, it wasn't pretty.  Downright ugly at times.  BUT, if I had to pick a game where they'd completely fall apart, it would without a doubt be agains UMass.  Just think what this kind of performance would have done to us against UConn or ND.  I'm not pleased with this, and the coach in me doesn't care how many stars my players had when they were being recruited/not recruited at all:  I still let them know that this was unacceptable.  But the realist in me knows that a crew like this is BOUND to break down at some point.  The way I look at it, I'm incredibly grateful for the first two defensive performances- they were completely unexpected gifts from an overachieving group who played as hard as they could.  I see this last performance as what I would have expected before any downs had been played this year.

Simply put, if you're a UM player right now, you cannot allow this to happen again.

If you're a UM fan, count your blessings and be thankful our D has given us as much as they have- it could have been MUCH worse than it's been.

We're 3-0 and I have to say...I LOVE our team's attitude this year.  I see growth and maturity.  We're light years ahead of where we were last year and the year before.  You can see it in Mike Martins comment about them no longer looking for someone to blame.

I'll say it again- count your blessings and hope that our D can keep overachieving or squeaking them by.

ALL IN FOR MICHIGAN!!!

GO BLUE!!!

Glad to see our team step up and acknowledge the fact that they played like crap.  Really good to see Denard keeping the team composed when down 17-7.  We had a lot of breaks that didn't go our way today.  Glad RR is going to watch the entire 3 phases of the tape.  Maybe he can see something that Gerg isn't seeing.

I was certain that Notre Dame managed to find the most boastful, self-congratulatory, overweening douche of a coach during the fat-man Weiss era.

Ahhh, but I was wrong.  Brian Kelly has filled the void of self-importance so well on the ND sideline that it has one longing for the humility of one Front Butt Weiss.  That smug grin and patronizing roll of the eyes everytime his quarterback errs, ensures fans and foes alike that success is his birthright.  His haughty demeanor reinforces the inevitability of a 90 yard ND touchdown on every subsequent snap, if only his idiot players could comply and execute on his brilliant schemes.  An interception or unsuccessful drive is never on Kelly, as player development is not a responsibility of such a genius.  Instead, accountable for all the misteps and losses are the faulty cogs in the perfection that is his flawless, entitled football machine.  Here's to you Brian Kelly....May you keep that annoyed glare in your eyes and cussing mouth towards your freshmen QBs to time's end.  You are indeed a worthy heir to the thrown of bombastic Golden Douchery.

The defense was pretty pathetic. The thing that had me screaming in the stands was the lack of adjustment on defense. In the first half they ran a play action QB waggle several times and I think almost every one was successful. Our D comes out in the second half and does nothing to stop it all second half. That's embarassing and that's on the coaches. If you do not adjust to the opposing teams' plays that are gashing you for yards, they will go to the well often.

I have been up and down on GERG since he showed up. I really want to believe that he's a good coach for this team. I also know that it's more about "Jimmy's and Joe's than X's and O's" --- but GERG's defenses are terrible.  We sit back and let other teams dictate what will happen, and hope for them to shoot themselves in the foot. I think we need to get really aggressive, because we can't cover anybody right now.

There is a lot of talk about our ends blowing contain over and over. Well, UMass had two TE at the point of attack, and out numbered our D line 2 to 1 on many plays. I really don't like the 3-3-5 as it relates to who we have to work with on that side of the ball. You can call it "bad fundamentals," and I won't argue that there were many mistakes in technique. I also think that our strategy on D is lacking. They were really succesful at sealing off our ends and blowing into the second level like we were a highschool team.

You get the impression that GERG is a realist and believes that our secondary is just so vulnerable that they cannot commit against the run.  This virtually ensures that the other team will score 28 points, but makes it hard for them to get 40.  Perhaps that is an equation our coaches will take, believing that we will ordinarily score enough to win.  And if they are right, the W's speak for themselves (as they do right now).  But if we refuse to commit against the run, it's going to be hard to watch the MSU or UW game without pulling our hair out.

I'm happy for the win, was great to spend a day in AA and first time at the new Big House with my old man. It's been a while since we went to a game together. At any rate, I truly hope we can come up with a scheme and lineup that will enable us to be gap solid and maintain contain. Against ND Allen gave us fits breaking contain and the formations and schemes you saw from UMass look a lot what the Spartans are deploying successfully tonight vs. ND. We have to get better in time for that game and unfortunately neither BGSU or Indiana run offenses that offer that opportunity. And by the way, good lord, can we get someone who can field punts please? When I saw Gallon jump awkwardly at that ball and kick it all over the fieldI really lost my shit. There has to be someone who can do better that than on the two deep. Last point - it is great to see Taylor Lewan get in there and lay the wood. I'm in agreement with the Long comparisons, let's hope he keeps progressing.

Umass had the perfect offensive strategy for their ability throughout the ballgame. 1st down:  run...gain of 3.  2nd down:  run...gain of 3.  3rd and manageable:  play action, roll the QB out (avoid Michigan's pressure), and convert over and over.

I give the coaching staff of Umass even more credit in the 4th quarter.    The minutemen trailed by multiple possesions.  However, they never went away from their gameplan. They continued to pound the ball and convert on 3rd and manageable to slowly creep back in the game.  Conventional wisdom would have said to take shots down the field and to speed up the game.  Nevertheless, Umass continued to be a thorn in the Michigan defense.

Before the UCONN game, I just wanted wins and I didn't care how they came.  After the game today, I was pissed!  However, Michigan is 3-0 and I would have given my left testicle for that at the beginning of the season!

I will go to sleep tonight knowing that Michigan will be in a New Years Day bowl!  Go Blue!

A top 1-AA/FCS team is a lot better than a lower tier FBS team.  Like Appy State back in the day, there are a lot of FBS teams they would beat.

This game was a legit challenge for Michigan and will help them down the road.  It should not be expected that we would just walk over them, especially on D

I actually think that BG will be the "easy" game this year, not UMass.  But I still don't think that the 3rd and 4th quarters are reserved for Tate and Devin.

Football teams improve when they get their backup players some playing time.  It really doesn't look like there will be many opportunities during this season for the Maize and Blue to give their second and third string players much playing time except in games they could get blown out in.  Alabama 63, Duke 16.  I suspect the Crimson Tide put an awful lot of 3-4 and 5 team players on the field in that game.

I can't stand people only blaming Greg Robinson (and some even blame Lloyd Carr - ARE YOU KIDDING!) for the bad defense. You got to hold Rich Rodriguez accountable for that, because he hired him, along with Scott Shafer. GERG better earn his paycheck this week and coach his ass off.

Tony Gibson, coaching defensive backs AND special teams needs to be getting some heat too. Maybe the guy is so over his head with the lack of playmakers in the secondary that our special teams isn't getting the coaching and practice it so badly needs.

you complain at all about this win.  Geez.  Its a win and wins are always good.  This team went thru two very tuff games the weeks before and so no one should be surprized they were a little flat coming in.  And the D, well, no one thought they would be world beaters coming in.  Just play good enuf to win, that is all they need to do and they did it.

Now is not the time to get greedy.  Enjoy the win. Know they will get better and quit being such asshats.

This was a good scare for Michigan.  We don't need them thumping their chests going into the State game.  Or next week for that matter.   This was the first game that this group played where they were expected to win.  The experience will be good for them.   Defense and special teams remain a big concern.  Offense will need to continue to be dynamite to compensate.

To me the MOST disturbing part of yesterday's game was RR complete ignorace of what got us back into the game and gave us a very comfotable lead late into the 3rd quarter.

It was obvious to EVERYONE that we were not going to stop UMass ... but it was EQUALLY obvious they couldn't stop Michigan's spread offense.  We scored 5 straight touchdowns in about 20 minutes of play.  But then inexplicable ... RR changes to the I-formation which gave us 3 and out and the blocked punt.  FIVE TOUCHDOWNS in a row and RR changes our offense ... WTF !   This is the SAME GENIUS move that cost us the Illnios game (and a bowl game) last year ... remember 1st and goal from the 1 and RR goes to the I-formation.  HEY RR  -  STAY in the SPREAD and let DR work in SPACE !!!

This is TERRIBLE GAME COACHING .... and RR just doesn't get it.  He builds this team to be small & quick ... yet tries to play power football.  This is a VERY disturbing part of RR's game coaching.  C'mon there are a lot of very knowledgable football people on this site ... doesn't anyone else recognize the big ISSUE here ?

in 20 minutes in the first place, no?

Every coach in the country is going to make some decisions that backfire . . . cause they have to make about a hundred of them a game.

Yes, I thought it was a mistake to try to run out the clock so early.  Turns out I was right.  But I also thought it was a mistake not to pound Cox or Hopkins into the line against ND for the final touchdown.  Turns out I was wrong.

Let's not be Buckeyes here, where we take a tiny little sample out of a hundred events to "prove" our point.

RR is not an idiot just because a few things backfire.

The point is .... you make the other team stop what you are doing successfully (this is the gane plan).  If your planning is successful ... then don't change it.  You change when the other team has you figured out and is stoppingyou.  Scoring TD's on 5 straight possesions means you are being successful and you don't need to change.

Plus ... we are NOT (yes caps) a power football team.  That is just a very simple fact.  RR's game coaching was questioned even at WV ... so I am not pulling a tiny sample (though the Illinois game is worth noting).  These are his coaching "characteristics" and it should be a concern for all U of M fans.   RR by changing a "winning strategy" did take his foot off the gas !

Whatever happened to the quality defense Michigan used to be noted for?  This defense doesn't look like it could stop a grade school team.  I seriously doubt that there are three players on this defensive team that would start for the Buckeyes.  No kicking game, no punting game, no punt return game and no defense.  As good as this offense is it surely can't be counted on to carry the rest of this team on it's back.  Michigan has to be the worst 3-0 team in the country and any record with less that five losses is going to be a surprise.

I couldnt agree more. I can only assume that RR was trying to save Denard from taking more hits?? There was way too much time left on the clock to go to a "prevent" offense. When we took over the ball with about 5 mins left, we should have stayed in the spread and ran until we either scored or ran the clock out. Denard gets about 7 yards per run. No one has proven to be able to stop Denard for less then 10 yards on 3 staright downs.  With the struggles we are having in our kicking game, we need to go for it more in these situations. At the end of the Notre Dame game, we stayed in the spread, and Denard scored the TD with the run.

What's amazing to me is how many boneheaded plays Gallon has made.   At what point do you stop sending him out there?  I can't even recall one punt return yet.   All I remember is letting 20 punts bounce without fielding them, a small handful of fair catches and two egregious errors where he shouldn't have been near the ball.

BGSU will not be a push over.  I watched there game vs Marshal, their offense had a great short passing game, which eats its way down field a little at a time (#19 has a ton of catches.) Think Toledo game a few years ago.  Lots of 8 -10 yard routs, and our DB's playing 15 yards off the ball.  Makes for a long day, if you don't play those routes tight.

This week will need to be about re-focusing on the little things.  Special teams practice should be first and foremost.  We all know the field goal kicking is awful, and needs to be worked out by practice.  The punt and kickoff return units lack any "pop", plus sloppy ball handling and poor decisions, will catch up with them.  Kickoff  unit was slow getting to the ball, and a fast returner in the big ten will make them pay.  D line need to pressure the QB, utilizing some stunts on obvious passing downs and an occasional blitz would be nice.  DB's are young, but need to lay the wood to some folks.  If you give up the catch, at least pop them so they know you were there.

I can't believe we won but looked so bad, as for UMASS, if they played in the MAC, they would be in the top 2 for sure.  Great effort from them.
