LONG OVERDUE
Here's the interview:
Whatevs, yo.
When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing. -- Bo Schembechler

with his eyes closed? I guess at worst, he could be an insurance policy should things go horrible wrong...
You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four. ~Dan Birdwell
So I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there is no way he ends up at Michigan.
That was an outrageous waste of time in the form of an interview. I don't think I heard one thing that I didn't know prior to hearing that.
Also, my goodness is ESPN running with this. Their promo for the 6 o'clock Sportscenter had Linda Cohn asking, "Why does a Duke point guard want to be the starting quarterback at Michigan?" Wow. Just wow.

Yeah, it requires two leaps - one, that Paulus actually ends up at Michigan, which hasn't been decided. And two, that once he's at Michigan that he beats out Forcier, who already has several months of learning the playbook and actual on-field practice time running plays, plus the spring game, and looked pretty good doing it.
But that's not a flashy headline. ESPN will just make shit up if the truth isn't interesting enough for them - technically what they said isn't false, but it implies that Michigan is definitely going to give him the job, which is far from true, and in fact more likely to be not true.
Worst Interview Ever.
He's functionally retarded.
"I have been throwing." Good for you. I can throw a football 55 yards but I could never play quarterback for a college team and neither can you.
Please go away.
Signed,
Michigan
It was apparent the kid was nervous on PTI -- saying "uhh, or ummm" about every five words.
However, where it is good for the program to have competition at the QB position I surmise it is not good for the program to have the media running with this story like it is.
I do not know what RR thinks and I bet none of us do (other than the Knowledge), but I bet RR did not think that Paulus visiting MI would get this much national attention. I also doubt that RR thought Paulus would have waited on committing if he actually did offer a scholarship (why go through a Pryor saga with a guy who hasn't played for 4-5 years). Either way, RR is probably not too happy with the kid/media right now.
Paulus chose his words very wisely with the PTI guys and he did not actually say he was offered. I would not be surprised, as was discussed in Route66's post, if the media just ran with this before the story was actually true/ripe.
In any event, RR is our coach and I am behind the team. If he says jump, I will say yes. If Barwis says jump, I will ask how high. "I'm all in for Michigan 2009"
"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves."
SportsCenter just ran a story on it. For me, all the publicity is going to be negative towards UM. Joel Schad (probably spelled his name wrong) just went into the whole "I bet Tate Forcier isn't happy" thing and that, whether true or not, is not good for the program. I think this is going to blow up in RR's face.
Way to much coverage for a backup point guard who wants to come in and play one year of college football. Seems like a big PR move by the kid. I for one hope he goes elsewhere.
"Seems like a big PR move by the kid."
I didn't know flying to a school and watching a practice counted as a "big PR move."
If PTI called you up and wanted to interview you about your athletic endeavors (if you have any, I have no idea), would you turn them down? Probably not.
How is this a big PR move by the kid?
Maybe he just wants to play college football and he's a good athlete so he can do it if he wants. It's only "big PR" because the media - and you - choose to make it so.
I never understand why people think a kid choosing a school is always about PR.
"He's dragging his recruitment out for the publicity."
"He just wants to play football for the publicity."
Maybe he realized he's not very good at basketball and wants another chance at playing sports before he has to become an insurance salesman or run a sporting goods store.
Maybe I went overboard on the kid, I'm not sure, still I am tired of this ordeal already, and no I don't think I would have gone on PTI. I much prefer the low key style of Devin Gardner, to the side show that was Big Will.
Paulus did hold a press conference today, did he not? Wait until you have something definitive to say before holding a Presser, unless of course you desire a little attention.
Big Will wasn't a "sideshow" originally. He committed to Michigan and didn't say much about it. He didn't start "wavering" until his senior season, but he had been committed for several months by that point.
Devin Gardner held a press conference to announce his decision. He could have just as easily texted a guy from Scout or Rivals and given his decision.
Paulus did hold a press conference. Imagine if he hadn't, though. This board would be deafening with the whispers about it, whether he held a press conference or not. Rather than be asked the same questions billions of times, he just decided to get it over with in one shot.
If you hate the kid because he's a Dookie or because he flopped or because he's white or because he's Greg Paulus, that's fine.
But too many people are coming up with completely unrelated or hypocritical or illogical reasons for disliking the situation.
That is exactly what he did not do, it is not over by any stretch though I wish it were.
I do not know or hate Paulus, I was ambivelant about him coming here and for the most part still am. Just please go away until you have made a decision.
Big Will, the whole dog and pony show he orchestrated for his announcement nauseated me.
If there is a rumor, most entertainers address the issue publicly. This is nothing new. There's no reason to paint Paulus in a negative light for calling a press conference.
If he had not called a press conference, the rumors would still be floating. We would still be talking about it. We would be wondering if he had a scholarship offer. Tate Forcier might be wondering if he had a scholarship offer. We would be wondering if Rodriguez was recruiting to play wide receiver or safety or something.
He held a press conference.
He has an opportunity to play at Michigan. That opportunity is to play quarterback. He told us what we needed to know. Do you still have any lingering questions that he could answer other than "Is he going to come to Michigan?" Probably not. They've mostly been answered.
Because of the press conference.
Let's move on.
That seemed pretty clear from the interview. He said he was contacted by the Packers a couple of days after Duke lost in the Sweet 16. Then he says he's been working out in football ever since. Doesn't look like a potential basketball pro would be doing those types of things after his college career ends. Not that it matters, I don't think he was good enough in basketball to play at any level.
Anyways, I thought his most important line was the one about being contacted by the Packers two days after the season ended. Where was the story then? It seems to me that he's committed to football now that he has pretty much told the world about his football opportunities.
Another interesting tidbit from the interview was the fact that he has worked out extensively in football. Perhaps he got the feeling back and now wants to jump right into an opportunity? He was nervous, but also excited.
Yeah, now I know why I hate Duke. I'm tired of this guy already.
Why are you tired of him? Because he was a big-time basketball player and ESPN has decided to run a story on him every 15 minutes? It has nothing to do with him. You should be tired of ESPN.
words of wisdom. This just is a kid wanting to make the most of his future - like the Magnus said - to not be an insurance salesman. This is RichRod making the most of his quarterback position - like he has said - creating more competition. And this is a media outlet making the most of everyone's willingness to let it get to them, so everyone will keep watching for more "updates." This in an instance when you can, should, blame the messenger.
I just woke up. I think I passed out for about 5 minutes from surprise.
Not around the horn.
