OT: Y.E. Yang defeats Tiger at PGA Championship

Y.E. Yang became the first Asian-born golfer to win a major, and this has to be one of the greatest finishes in the history of the game. While I feel for Tiger, it is hard to say that Yang didn't win this tourney (his 3-utility approach on 18 is the thing of legends).

Oh how I hate Ohio State!

Both had their chances, and Yang capitalized. Tiger had six or seven putts that he missed by two inches or less, so it's not like he was playing terrible golf. Congrats to Yang. As the announcers were saying, it was only a matter of time before the Asian golf community had a hero to look up to, and I think this qualifies.

I can't believe he 3-putted that par 3 and still won. Great final round.

I like watching the first time major winners celebrate, they're entertaining. I thought he was going to throw his bag into either the crowd or the lake.

I put up a tough front, but deep down I just want to be held.

Great job by Yang, I'll give him is once in a lifetime moment in the sun.

To me however this was all about Tiger missing putt after putt.

It seemed he started to worry more about his line then just going out there and knocking the the thing in.

Congrats to Yang and let me be the first to say it will be ok when he misses his next 6 cuts!

Couldn't ask for a more exciting final round. It's fun watching these guys struggle to make their way around the course sometimes.

After Yang tied Tiger, I texted my best friend (recent ND grad, college offers for golf) to tell him that Yang was going to pull this off. Before they played #16, he texted me back wanting to put 50 bucks on Tigers winning (Yang was leading by 1), so naturally I took it. The rest is history. Nothing better than free money from a ND grad.

Almost every guy that plays with Tiger in a final round in a major shits his pants. Tiger's stroke average in final rounds of a major is 69, and his partners in final rounds have an average score of 73. This guy stared down Tiger (admittedly having a bad day with the putter but still) and not only didn't crack, but he won the tournament with two great final shots in the 18th to not give Tiger a chance to come back. What a great display of mental toughness.

Over the last 3 years or so, he has frittered away some opportunities to add to his colection of major championships. The Zack Johnson Masters, the Angel Cabrerra US Open, and now this.
What's funny is that the guys who seem to put the stiffest challenges are nobodies who have the run of their life. Bob May, Rich Beem, Chris DeMarco (twice), and now this fellow. They come in with nohing to lose, while Tiger seems to go into "careful" mode, over reading greens, playing from the rough more, seeming to hope that the other guy will lose his will.

I think the more this goes on, the more you have to admire the record that Jack Nicklaus established. And he was playing against guys that provided some serious competition, like Palmer, Watson, Trevino, Johnny Miller, and others. Nicklaus' 19 second place finishes at Majors are incredible as well.

What seemed like a foregone conclusion now begins to look a bit sketchy. At one point, you'd have thought Tiger might win 30 major champsionships. Now, approaching 35, you have to wonder if he is coming back to the field after dominating for so long. Hey, it happens. Jack won the majority of his majors (14, I think) before turning 35; now maybe we see a permanent decline in Tiger's game as well. Nothing to be ashamed at, just more reasons to consider just how great the accomplishments that Nicklaus put up still stand.

I think it is a fair criticism to say that Tiger seems to get too careful at times. It will remain to be seen if he continues along those lines. He misses an awful lot of putts that a guy with so many championships in his bag should make, even at a major.

That being said, it is what it is.

I don't like to argue over the small things, but Tiger will turn 34 this December. Also, Jack got his 15th at age 38 at the '78 British Open. So, Tiger has a couple years to play with here.

I'm just comparing the two and noting that there was falloff after the age of 35 for Nicklaus, as he won (for him) just four majors after hitting that mark. But, he did finish second in at least two more (both to Watson) in gigantic head to head duels that are still classics.

I'm absolutely certain Tiger will break the mark, but we can see just how great Nicklaus was, as Tiger most certainly will not (IMO) shatter it by what I once thought would be with a final tally of about 25-30 majors, and I thought he'd definitel break the mark by age 35.

That being said, it is what it is.

I enjoy watching Tiger and was rooted for him today, so I went 0-4 in who I rooted for in majors this year. But the difference between Tiger and Jack is that Jack handled not winning much more gracefully than Tiger. There is nothing wrong with hating to lose and being pissed at yourself, but that is a difference in the two no matter what happens to the major record.

As for today, it is amazing that Tiger can play closer to mortal status and still almost win. Tomorrow, however, the press will start to have new whispers about Tiger's career being over, etc... This all because he failed to win three weeks in a row.

Well, the problem for Tiger is that it is all based on major championships, and him blowing one on Sunday is Big News. Yes, this will be played up until next April at the Masters.

I can hear it now: Next year will be "Tiger's Road to Redemption" in an attempt to drum up interest.

But really, between those who love Tiger and those who (inexplicably) hate him--if he fades away or goes mediocre on us, the PGA will be back to where it was in between his rise and the end of Nicklaus' career: being relegated on the popularity scale somewhere between the National Squash Association and the National Toast Buttering championships.

That being said, it is what it is.

Very impressed with Yang, minus that disaster on 17. Tiger hit a great shot on 17, but just over cooked it a little bit and ended up bogeying. To me, that was the tournament and the choke that every player has when he is in contention against Tiger. Yang choked on that hole and Tiger just didn't capitalize. That is what the difference was in this tournament. Well, that and Tiger burning the lip of every damn putt he all week.

The fact that Yang apparently can't speak a word of english may have been a huge benefit to him in his pairing with Tiger. Playing with Tiger is akin to Michigan playing on the road in places like Madison and Columbus. The crowd is going nuts over every stroke and as we say, "every stroke makes someone happy". Without knowing what the more derogatory fans were saying about him, Yang didn't need to have that filter working for him as do all the other contenders playing with tiger.
