I'll be impressed if the US even gets a shot on goal.
Not what you meant?

remember we tied them when they won the world cup
And the Italians have a very low opinion (mostly justifiable) of American football. The press talks occasionally about Landon Donovan but otherwise nobody is particularly worried, which is par for the course in Italy (and often means they underestimate their opponents).
I think we've got a shot at a draw, but that's about it. Egypt nearly tied Brazil earlier today, so weirder things have happened.
egypt is not a bad team...didnt they win the african cup last year?
that is what qualified them for this tournament. but I think they won the one before that too.
I hope so. I hate Italian soccer.
I think Feilhaber and Bornstein are not good at all.
Both played well against Honduras. Feilhaber's obviously been MIA for a while now, and he hasn't been playing loads for his club, but he has the potential to be a good, creative player.
And anybody's better than Beasley at left back.
I agree with both of your statements. I just want to see Mastroeni hit the bench after his play in the last two games.
If Mo Edu was healthy, he'd be starting ahead of both Clark and Pablo.
And with the new FIFA rules, later on in qualifying we should also have Jermaine Jones, who if there's enough time to get him integrated should start over any of those three guys.
dumb tackle ... but wtf? really? weve been looking good too
what is it about US v. Italy that makes refs award terrible red cards?
Oh right, the Italian acting.
Red Cards don't help very much.
thats a great spot for a free kick ... needed more on it i think ... bradleys been playing great
I hate this US team even more than I hated Jeff Agoos or the Steve Sampson '98 World Cup squad.
and undisciplined, they seem to pass and dribble into trouble all the time and they are not creative at all. Does this make 5 games in a row they have scored on a penalty?
Don't get me wrong, they have some nice pieces (Bradley, Altidore) and they might even be the only pieces they have to choose from. I just don't find them fun to watch like I have some other teams.
wow we just dogded a huge bullet .... that wouldve been an ugly own goal ... what is borenstein doing?
an own goal from 22 yards?
donavan finishes a pk ... nice work by altidore ... this games been great so far
and a great ball by Benny.
i thought we looked really sharp ... espicially after the first 15 minutes or so ... bradley and altidore have me pumped up ... still our d scares the shit out of me ... i will be really impressed if we can hold on here down a man
This game has been pretty awesome to watch. After seeing the US-Honduras match live here in Chicago last weekend, I didn't think we had much of a chance today. I think we should have another goal too with Bradley and Altidore choking away a couple pretty sweet opportunities in the box. Considering we're a man down this is great. I just hope Italy doesn't gameplan us for the second half and succeed. Go USA!
What What Donnavan!!!!
Cannavaro not playing for Italy would be like if Lidstrom wasn't playing for the Red Wings. Huge loss.
There's a million bees buzzing around the stadium. Wow, is that annoying.
sooner or later ESPN would turn down (or off) the microphones closest to those stupid plastic horns.
"Hmm...I can stay in Italy and play for the reigning World Cup champions or go back to Jersey and play for 'Bob Bradley's boys.' Hmmm..."
to play anywhere else is wrong ... thats the point of a national team ... u play where ur born ... he was born in new jersey ... he should bee with the US ... god i hate bs red cards
that you're not a fan of Pablo Mastroeni.
im not ... i wanna watch true american born players playing true italian born players ... i do think its less of an issue if ur natural born country doesnt want u (ie Chris Kaman (sp?) playing for germany in basketball) but i still think its just wrong ... you should play where your born
How much have you had to drink today?
i just dont like watching a kid from jersey beat the US
oh god feeling when i see him looking to come onto the field
De Rossi with a strike. Forza Italia!!!
honestly ... thats a foul ... u have to call it ... he just took donavan out in the box
The refs in this game are a joke. First the extremely questionable red card, then the italian defender takes out donovan when he has position and they don't call the penalty. It shouldn't matter that we already had one penalty kick.
kljesten almost and then again on the corner ... that needs to be a goal
great effort but this just sucks ... god the refs have effed us ... god i hate rossi
That last one just added salt to the wound. Rossi gets 2. FORZAAAAAAA
Davies really needed to do better on that free header. Could have rescued a point, which would have been a fantastic result given they'd been playing with 10 for 2/3 of the game.
Dogcrap red card just killed the game though. US was toe to toe with them until the red card and actually the better team the rest of the first half despite being down a man. The last two goals were largely a result of US guys just being wiped out.
Typical; fans from losing team always blame the refs. America was way outmatched by Italy; how it was 1-0 USA at halftime just baffles me. Watched the 2nd half and saw an absolute butchering. The US defenders were continually out of position, and we had like 2 shots on goal in the 2nd half. This team isn't that good.
Doing so when the ref directly and wrongly left you short one man for 2/3 of the game is a little different than complaining about the refs in most other sports though. A soccer ref has more control over the result than perhaps any other ref in any sport with the red card power and what fouls in the box he decides to call. Only the home plate umpire in baseball comes close. Was it deserving of a yellow? Yeah, it was a dumb tackle. That is not a straight red tackle though.
And if that is a straight red, then it should have been 10 v. 10 a couple of minutes later when Grosso jacked Donovan in the face with an elbow.
The US doesn't have as much talent as Italy. It's hard enough as it is playing them 11 on 11. Give them a man advantage for that long and of course we're screwed.
So, the New York Times already has a story up on the game, with a headline that reads (I assume someone will fix this): Italy 2, United States 0. Which is strange not only because it's wrong but because we scored the first goal.
I couldn't watch the game due to work, but is Heduk back on the active list?
I think they left him off the roster due to his injury.
Personally I think Spector should probably be starting ahead of him (which he's doing now due to the injury), but Heydude does bring some great energy and you know the effort will always be there every single time he steps on the field.
I love Hejduk's celebration after he scores goals.
and Feilhaber suck. Try learning to kick the ball without falling down you dildos.
I think Feilhaber can create opportunities more than Mastroeni. I thought they both played well against Honduras. I missed the game today so I can't comment on it. But from the sound of it you were not pleased.
I agree that Bornstein was the weakest player out there but I don't understand all the hate on Feilhaber. The kid has the best vision on the team and plays some really good through balls. He needs to play in the middle and have a DM playing behind him(Cardo was doing awesome until that bullshit red. Once he develops some chemistry with Jozy, Landon, Deuce, (insert attacking player with pace) then it's off to the races. I agree that he needs to get more consistent with his play but he is a piece that the US has been sorely lacking since he went out with string of injuries. If he stays healthy and keeps on getting some PT then I would say he's penciled in for SA2010 and probably a starting spot.
his ceiling is good CONCACAF player. Maybe thats the best we can do at that position, but his touch has been awful the past few games.
I'm not as down on Feilhaber as I am Bornstein, but they're both the kind of player who looks the part of a world class player when they've got the ball at their feet, 65 yards from goal with no pressure within a 10 yard radius.
I just think both guys are serious defensive liabilities and they decrease the team's margin of error, especially against top 20 opponents. Maybe there isn't anyone better or maybe their struggles were just exacerbated by Clark's red card. Or maybe they just shouldn't be on the field at the same time. Whatever it is, I wouldn't mind seeing us find a lower risk, lower reward option in one at least one of those spots.
