Also, Edwin Jackson was fined.
Also, Edwin Jackson was fined.
Yeah that is strange. He had to be held back but he did not throw a punch or anything close to be fined.
I also don't understand why Jackson was fined.
I'm surprised that Youkilis got the same suspension as Porcello. Charging the mound and throwing your helmet is definitely worse than hitting someone. Especially since I don't think Porcello meant to hit Youkilis! Besides, they got a free hit on Cabrera that took him out of the game.
Who else would love to see us face the Red Sox in the playoffs now?
Porcello got the same suspension because he only plays 1 out of 5 games, come on people.
Porcello got the same suspension???? Are you kidding me!! This guy THROWS HIS HELMET AT HIM.. THINK about that throws his helmet he should of recieved 10 games. This boston trash team goes at every teams best player. They beaned A-rod and threw at Mark T, now they throw and HIT Miguel twice and inge once. Enough is enough, that punk ass youkalis is lucky Miguel was not on first so he could smash his face. god I am upset about this. I am done everyone backs down to these teams and I am sick of it, stick up for yourself and your teamates.
Oh and P.S.
they never broke the curse steriods broke the curse.
To be perfectly honest, I fail to see why it's so taboo to throw a helmet at the pitcher after you've been hit by a pitch (other than that it's a sissy thing to do). It's not a "dangerous weapon" like I keep hearing from observers. A 90 MPH fastball, especially when it is thrown at the batter intentionally, IS a dangerous weapon.
I realize the social protocol of this type of retaliation in baseball, but if we're going to accept that, let's not pretend that Youkilis could have done some serious damage by throwing a helmet. It's not dangerous. It's just lame.
You're right. I noticed other people on here being dumb.
Porcello, 5 games = 1 start. All they have to do is push his start back. Essentially make him the #5 starter that week instead of #4. No biggie.
Youkillis = 5 games. He plays everyday.
I don't think it's as easy as "make him the #5 starter that week instead of #4." Tigers play 5 straight. That means they have to bring in a non-rotation spot starter.
Yes, but it's also a suspension without pay. Each player loses 3% (5/162) of his salary from this. I don't really think that's fair to Porcello. (And how do all the other pitchers in the series who hit people get off scot-free?)
Didn't mean to hit him? Let's grow up.
I'm not a baseball guy and relied on highlights to help me out. As I recall, that wasn't the first pitch Porcello threw to Youkilis (I know he wasn't the first man up that inning). I would think that if you're going to hit a man in retaliation for hitting your man, you'd do it as shortly after the first hit as possible. And, if Porcello specifically wanted to hit Youkilis then I would think he would've done it on the first pitch (assuming that my memory is right and he didn't do it on the first pitch).
I just chalked it up to a kid getting emotional and really screwing up. Perhaps I underestimate Porcello.
I don't follow (and thus don't fully understand) baseball as well as other sports so I guess my thinking was just wrong.
Edit: Forgot to address the 5 game suspension means missing only 1 start thing. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Actually after watching a bunch of replays, I don't think he meant to. He sent a message when he went high and tight to Martinez. After that pitch, he stared right at Martinez, and that was certainly intentional. But his reaction after hitting Youk, he was clearly not happy with the pitch, and wasn't even looking at Youk. If he was trying to hit him, he woulda been staring him down too.
On a different note, let's hope Avila learns his lesson and never lets a hitter get to his pitcher again. And I'm not really surprised E Jax got suspended, he was looking for blood.
Porcello more than likely threw that pitch at Youkilis with full intention of beaning him. It was the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning in which Miggy almost broke his hand, it was a fastball and it his Youk right in the middle of the numbers.
I don't think Porcello expected to get charged and his reaction proved that. The hip toss was nice though.
Clearly was suspended for breaking the MLB rule against embarrassing a member of the Red Sox.
At least MGoMarc knows the real reason why they both recieved the same suspension. Boston Garbage
it was worth all five games to watch stick figure porcello toss crazy mofo youkilis to the ground.
Seems fair to me -- both players received adequate punishment. Porcello drilled Youkilis after having traded hit batsmen for two innings (and back into the previous game). If you incite a bench-clearing brawl, you're going to get suspended. It's not like he had no part in it. Besides, this hurts the Red Sox more than the Tigers, since Porcello is going to miss only one start. Youkilis is going to miss 4-5 games.
with this whole situation is that if Youkilis had just taken his base, nothing would have happened. No suspensions, no fines, nothing. Instead, he charges the mound inciting a bench clearing brawl, and Porcello gets ejected without warning. This is just a case of the umps pandering to the crowd, a la Manny Harris elbow against Purdue. Once again, Grade A Ultra Premium Horse Shit.
I think it was pretty obvious at that point that someone was eventually going to charge the mound -- Jim Price even said, "I think if we see another hit batsmen, we're going to see a brawl" on the radio.
Jim Price also said what Youk did was bush-league and Porcello gained a lot of respect.
Of course a home radio announcer would say that. Both suspensions are justified, and in my opinion the right length. Douche bag misses 5 games, Porcello, who threw inside twice in an attempt to "make things even," got a one game suspension. The fact he missed with his first inside pitch and threw again is why it's warranted. If you're going to hit him, do it the first time and it would have at worst been warnings to both benches.
That's absolutely fair.
Stating that Porcello drilled Youkilis after having traded hit batsmen may be a misrepresentation. From my understanding, Cabrera was hit twice and Youkilis was hit only once before Porcello hit him again. I may be wrong, and I apologize if I am.
Listen, teams protect their players (especially star players) by retaliating in kind. This has been part of the game for as long as I can remember, and coaches generally will respect that. To argue that Porcello incited a bench-clearing brawl is totally ignorant of this fact.
were each hit by a pitch on Monday night and then again on Tuesday. And whether or not Porcello meant to hit Youkilis, any additional hit batter was going to make things ugly. Do we know if the benches were warned after Porcello came inside on Martinez?
...should get a bonus, not a suspension.
Youkilis fights like a sissy bitch. The Tigers were probably planning on skipping a Porcello start soon anyway, so they'll just roll with it. Youkilis definitely ought to have the harsher penalty, though. Porcello gets five games because the league perceives it as retaliation for the Red Sox plunking our guys. Which means he's essentially being punished harder because of what the BlowSox pitchers were doing, the logic of which makes no sense to me.
Fuck Boston. I normally consider Yankees/Red Sox to be like a battle between Lord Voldemort and Emperor Palpitine, but fuck the Red Sox - their fans are obnoxious, whiny, angsty, and melodramatic, except when they're being arrogant little snots. Depends on whether the Yankees won that day.
I'd like to remind people that if you are a Tigers fan, you are not allowed to hate the Red Sox on the basis that they buy all their players, since Detroit's payroll last year (and possibly this year) was larger than Boston's payroll.
plenty of other reasons to dislike the Red Sox
Or like the fact that Red Sox fans are basically MSU fans, deriving their pleasure more from another team's misery (the Yankees) than their own team's success. Except when they're deriving pleasure from their own misery, and nobody likes an emo baseball fan.
Truest statement ever.
Tigers payroll is less than the Red Sox this year. We were a whole 4 million higher than the Red Sox last.
That being the first time in the last 10 years, we more than the Sox.
In the last 10 years, the Sox have outspent the Tigers on MLB contracts by 397 million. Not including minor league guys, or posting fees, (Dice K add 50 more).
All this info from Cot's Baseball Contracts.
Like I said, the Tigers' payroll last year, and POSSIBLY this year, was bigger than that of the Red Sox. If what you say is correct, the Tigers' payroll was indeed bigger last year, and not so this year. Um, yeah, really.
want but for porocello to get 5 games is crazy. the ump never warned either team. which he should have done after miggy got hit and v. martinez thought he was being thrown at. i could see rick getting 5 games if he was warned and still threw at youkilis. 1 or 2 games would have been enough for him. youkilis is the one that tried to cause further injury by throwing his helmet.
He wouldn't have pitched either game, it is in essence a 1 game suspension. Not that I agree with suspending him, but suspending a starter for 2 games that he was never going to pitch in would be stupid.
still appeal it and get it reduced.
i see what you are saying. but my point is how can you suspend a guy when no warnings had been issued and all he was doing was protecting himself. the umps caused the problem last night, by not stopping it before it happened.
So I can look at this with a bit more objectivity perhaps. It's a piss poor decision by MLB. There's definitely no way he's as culpable as Youkilis. Maybe the rational is to ensure he misses 1 start. But a missed start is an excessive punishment in and of itself (he'll end up missing 1.5+ starts due to the ejection). You know, Matt Garza admitted to hitting Teixeira a couple weeks ago, and all he got was a fine. This is nonsense.
as 1 full inning is not a start in my book. When you are forced to go to the pen after 1, you've effectively conceded the game. That's the excessive punishment in this case.
So even if you think a missed start is warranted for Porcello, justice would be to let him finish the game, and suspend him afterward. In which case the Tigers have time to make adjustments and plan for a rotation without him.
I want to give New England back to England.
But our point is the same, he's being penalized more than 1 start b/c of the ejection. Cheers.
what I'm saying is that he's getting 2 starts (yesterday + his next one) in addition to the team taking the de facto forfeit that was last night. That last part was my real beef. I didn't mean anything against you, by the way. All my rage is directed against Boston and Mexico at the moment.
Give New England back to King Phillip and the Wampanoag, that is where it rightfully belongs
Dont kill me, but this could actually help the tigers later in the season. Porcello will get some rest which will help keep his arm for the rest of the season. He is still 20, and his arm is very vulnerable to fatigue. Do I thing he should have gotten the same punishment as that douchebag Youkilis? No, not at all. What he did in throwing his helmet instantly should make his suspension longer. However, Porcello is only missing 1 start so its not as bad as it may first appear.
he starts every 4-5 games as it is....so he is only missing one start.....equivalent to Youk missing one game.
Why? I think Youk should have been suspened more. At least he only misses 1 start. I guess Bonine will get the spot start.
last night and see Kruk and Eric Young breakdown how the fight should have gone? It was the most ridiculous thing I had ever seen on TV. They replayed it multiple times, with play-by-play and graphics to illustrate the proper technique. Eric Young then advised that if you are going to charge the mound, you need to "throw a punch and get your licks in". Not kidding.
Not saying there isn't procedure for bench-clearing brawls, but they were acting like Porcello was an idiot for not doing certain things (like rolling towards third-base so that Brandon Inge, a former catcher, could lend his vast experience and knowledge in bench clearing brawls). It was so stupid I couldn't even laugh...I hope somebody else knows what I'm talking about.
Yeah I saw that too. I like the MLB Network people a lot better than the ESPN people. I also like the live look-ins they do.
seriously, Youk? Can we please stop with that fucked up batting stance you got going on?
I stole this comment from some random commenter at a Tigers blog.
I love how I'm a random commenter and evil.
Everyone make sure to protect your own.
I'm sorry if I don't comment in the quantity you guys do
So... the spring game has come and gone. We're in the throes of recruiting, but to be honest I don't really care about that shit until the class starts to take a bit more shape. So where does that leave us? Well, here. We're 55 days from the start of the season with nothing but summer practice to look forward to in the Michigan football world.
"Watson penalized Porcello for intentionally throwing pitches at Victor Martinez in the first inning and Youkilis in the second."
As the Sparty Blogger would say: "You don't know that"
At least one beat writer for boston wrote an article saying youk should try out for the pats, because he's sooooo great at tackling. I realize he was kidding, but seriously, FUCK BOSTON!!!
since the umps didn't bother warn the teams last night before the brawl broke out, odds are this will now cause MLB to warn both teams before tonights game. which means if either pitcher loses a pitch and hit some one they are going to be tossed right then and there. so if galarraga accidently hits one of the red sox early and gets tossed its going to be another long night for the tigers bull pen which has already been extended in the 1st 2 games.
Porcello shouldn't have been suspended at all. He wasn't warned, wasn't throwing at his head and from what I've read it's split on whether or not people actually think he was throwing at Youk.
The next time Boston comes to town, even next year, I hope there's retribution. Youk and his temper are what caused this whole mess.
Porcello should not have been suspended because he already missed a start, yesterday. Youk is a giant fucking douchebag, and so are 85% of RedSox fans.
I guess this is one way to keep Porcello's innings down.
but i hate the fucking Red Sox more than the Yankees.
I like the Red Sox organization much more than the Yankee organization.
I hate the Red Sox fans 10000x more than I hate Yankee fans.
Do you mean this?
Yeah, fuck Boston.
best. thread. evah.
