OT - Pistons Offseason

Who does everyone see us getting in Free agency?

ESPN said our chances with Hedo Turkoglu and Carlos Boozer are very high.

I see Boozer as a 4, Dyess backing him up. If we land Hedo, I see us trading TayTay and someone else for Chris Bosh.

Bosh, Boozer, Hedo, RIP, Stuck. That's a mean lineup, it will help us with the Cavs, Celtics, Magic.

Thoughts?

Who wants to win? Hedo

Give me negative points

I think that's a pretty good lineup and, if they can stay healthy, probably good enough for 4th or 5th in the east. They wouldn't have a true center or point guard and the bench behind Bynum and McDyess would be average at best, but this team could definitely be competitive.

Try and get a centerpiece high in the lottery. Boozer would be a bad contract, unless almost the entire thing was games played incentives, hell never play enough to earn what you pay him. Turkoglu is an interesting piece, and I'm not sure what I would think about his signing. They need a piece to build around, and without any big trading chips, or a team that is a free agent destination, I think their best bet lies in the lottery.

If they could get Turkoglu fairly priced then I would be fine with that, just don't pay him superstar money. But tank the season and get a lottery pick and use that extra cash to get a big name free agent next year and make that title run.

They need to tank this year; hopefully, they "accomplish" this by getting young players a lot of experience. Then, next year they will have a lottery pick and some better FA's to look at. By then, they will also figure out if Michael Curry is actually capable of leading an NBA team.

I still think Tom Izzo would be a great hire for the Pistons. He has to want to know if he could succeed in the NBA, and the Pistons could probably benefit from a little more of a disciplinarian coaching their team. And the angst it would cause in EL would be quite amusing.

A nice contract of five years for a total of $25 million would probably be enough to sway Izzo.

Izzo makes $1.7 million plus a bunch of incentives (for both winning and some other stuff) as the MSU coach. He has the ability to become athletic director when he finishes coaching (or when current AD Hollis is done). His team is nationally competitive annually and his school loves him. To sum up, he likes his job, has great job security, and has career possibilities beyond coaching)

The Pistons would offer a significant raise ($4-5 million a year). However, his job will not be secure and he would have to give up any chance of being involved in a meaningful way with MSU when he finishes coaching. Also, dealing with NBA players is much less enjoyable than dealing with college players, especially disciplinarians. This is because college players are dependent on their coach for the opportunity to play enough to get noticed in order to get drafted. NBA coaches have no such leverage over their players, who are a) already getting payed and b) generally known well enough for their future prospects not to be significantly damaged by personal conflicts with the coach. Furthermore, standards of conduct are still higher for college players than NBA players, as colleges strive to protect their reputation as an academic institution (even in cases, such as Ohio State, where academic institution is a questionable term).

Coaching in the NBA is not so much about X's and O's as it is about managing the locker room and getting players on your side. NBA players don't give a rat's ass about the college game, and time and again they've tuned out guys who've come straight from the college ranks to the pros.

Laimbeer hasn't coached an NBA game, but he's played in a hell of a lot of them, and that can go pretty far when it comes to establishing locker room cred.

Laimbeer would get less respect i think. You listed those coaches but IMO Izzo is better than all of those. He does it year in and year out. He doesn't always get those one and dones and top guys. He gets guys, builds chemistry, and a team. He is an excellent coach. I hope beilein can be just as good. If he is then we will have a very good program.
Also, Izzo's rebounding drill he does (i don't know name or description), a lot of NBA assistants have gotten it from him. He could easily be an assistant coach and i think NBA coach. Teams have tried to get him to leave and go Pro. I just think there is only one team he would go to because what he has done for MSU

That's absurdly misleading. Van Gundy was coach of Wisconsin for a single season in 1992 before he was fired for going 13-14 (he had coached division II before that). He then spent 9 years as an assistant coach on the Heat before he got Riley's job. I'm sorry - but that's not anything like "hiring a college coach", as he didn't get the job as a result of his college success.

JMblue's point is that if you look around the NBA at their successful coaches - Phil Jackson, D'antoni, Popovich, Adleman, Riley, Byron Scott, etc., how many of them came from college? The single successful example I can think of is Larry Brown. There's a huge difference in the egos of NBA players and NCAA players, and not every coach can deal with the difference. Also, many college coaches make a living off of a talent disparity (for instance, Roy Williams has probably had a superior talent on his roster than 98% of the teams he's played throughout his career) - in the NBA, that doesn't happen - these guys that live of recruiting can't get it done.

If you believe ESPN Insider, Ben Gordon is ours. And, Boozer probably isn't. Rip and Prince are on the block to try and get a big man (Kaman, Camby, Chandler, Stoudamire, Bosh are all on the market), and then we use the left over cap space to bring in Hedo. Not sure how accurate that will turn out to be.

If we want to get Hedo it would have to be in a sign and trade. The magic sign the Turk and we trade them Tay. Also there is really no chance since Hedo is about to sign for 20 million more then he is worth and when is the last time Joe Dumars seriously overpaid someone? Besides the stiff known as Kwame Brown oh and Darko but he may still workout since he is still younger then guys who were drafted this year (as said by Doug Gottlib)

If not I think the guy you have to go after who is ultra available is Tyson Chandler. Ok low post presence but a Monster when it comes to blocking shots. This will at least help with Sheed going to sign some where else (Magic?). Since all reports were that he ran the defense for the last 5 years.

Also moving Rip has got to be the number one thing on our list to do. He may be the worst ball handling 2 guard in the NBA. He is a walking turnover. He is much better suited some where like New Orleans where the offense is completely ran through a great point guard. I think it hurts Rips game with Stucky being more of a combo guard.

Best Case

Stucky
Gordon
Tay
Boozer
Chandler

not as pretty as Hedo, Gordon, Boozer, Rip and Stucky but I bet my team would win a 7 game series with them every time.

With NO cutting salary, you can get chandler and maybe another piece for almost nothing but the cap relief you give them. I'm not familiar with what else would be available, but someone on that team is probably paid a little too much, but still useful. As for chandler, he's a good complement, blocks a lot of shots, rebounds well enough, and has a decent post game. Plus he's young, big, and athletic, might as well.

um well considering Darko played like the 4015th pick of the draft I guess paying him number 2 money would be considered accessive.

Also here are a few players that reside in that 2 to 4 million dollar range that we are paying Kwame "I almost single handedly ruined MJ's Legacy" Brown.

Michal Finly 2.5 Million
Joe Smith 4 Million
Rafer Alston 4 million
Al Horford 4 Million

There are ofcourse more players that make that 4 million range but these are some notable ones.

Here is an excert from ESPNS player card for Kwame

"2008-09 outlook: Brown signed a two-year, $8 million deal with Detroit, leaving baffled onlookers to wonder what, exactly, this guy has to do before people stop paying him based on his potential. Brown was twice traded for All-Stars, yet has never averaged double figures, nor even held onto a starting job for an entire year, and his numbers have only become worse the past couple seasons. Seeing the glass as half full, his defense will have some value. If he can sop up 15 minutes a night as a backup center without butchering too many offensive possessions, Detroit will at least come close to getting its money's worth."

His game is terrible he missed almost 30 games again this year...most as healthy scratches....no your right Joe found great value with Kwame. What was I thinking.

As far as the Hedo situation...he did opt out but the team that can pay him the most money if I'm not mistaken is the Orlando Magic. So him resigning is unlikely but it is a very possible option.

Here is a qoute from Hedo on the possibility of resigning with the Magic. He seems to think it is much more likely then we do.

"Opting out doesn't mean I'm going to leave," he said. "I'm looking for the best opportunity for myself and my family. I hope everything will work out for both sides and I stay here because I became Turkoglu here. It's a good time for me to make a decision, and hopefully everything will work out and I'll be in a Magic jersey."
