Imagine you are a Heisman Memorial Trophy voter and told that you must select from one of two QB's. Alas, you have been in a sugar induced coma for the past year(d*mn you, Ho-Hos) and you only have the players' 2008 statistics as reference with no indication of the players' names or teams for which they played (work with me on this one...): Whom do you choose?
att compl compl % yards ypa TD INT att yds ypa TD
#1 160 267 59.9 2091 7.8 15 3 173 843 4.9 13
#2 100 165 60.6 1311 7.9 12 4 139 631 4.5 6
Which player, based on individual statistics, is more deserving of accolades? If I had to pick one (and, honestly, neither is really Heisman worthy) the clear choice would be player #1.
Open the doors, Monty, and surprise! Player #1 is Robert Griffin of Baylor and Player #2 is Terelle Pryor of OSU. Why then does the media slobber over TP, while Griffin, toils in obscurity down in the dusty plains of central TX?
The answer, IMO, is threefold: notoriety, surrounding talent and defense. Griffin plays for Baylor, the perennial cellar dweller of the Big 12, while Pryor plays for MNC contender OSU. For the most part, Griffin is surrounded by 2 and 3 star players, while TP is surrounded by 4 and 5 stars. Baylor's defense gave up 352 points in 12 games in 2008, while OSU's defense gave up just 181 points in 13 games.
EDIT: Sorry about the stat formatting, I have never been able to figure out why it looks fine when I am typing it up, but so sh*tty when it actually posts.
