Rather than attend 18-months of treatment, former Spartan Charles Rogers has opted to go back to jail.
OT - Charles Rogers at it again
After the prerequisite "typical Spartan behavior" sentiment, I like this decision. Thirty days of jail or a year and a half of paying to piss in a cup a few times a week? I think he is smart to get it over with.
Rehab doesn't work unless the person wants it to work, anyway. He would probably be fairly clean in jail, depending upon how easy it is to get drugs there, and he could attend AA and NA meetings free after he gets out if he really wants to.
If he doesn't want to, then he can "sparty on, dude."
I don't think Rogers' story has much to do with being a "typical Spartan" as much as a cautionary tale of what can happen when everything comes too easy to you and nobody steps in and provides some direction when things finally start to get tough. Rogers was one of the best athletes I've seen play against UM, and it is sad to see him fall so far. I take no pleasure out of seeing him throw his life away like this.
I'm sure that anyone who tried to step in and provide direction was quickly shown the door. That's just a problem with celebrity as a whole. Successful people get deluded and surrounded by yes-men and enablers.
Just a theory, but yeah, sad.
Some of the quotes in this article are pure hilarious:
“I’m just going to do my 10 days, get out of the court system and try to get in shape for a comeback,” Rogers said Wednesday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from the Oakland County jail in Pontiac, Mich. “Am I sad about the way my life has turned out? No, because I know the strides I’ve made to take care of Charles Rogers.”
. . .
“The structure was cool, but I had a hard time with the perfection that they stress in the program,” Rogers said. “I did learn a lot from it, and it’s going to help me get back on my feet.
I'm proud to be a Michigan Wolverine!
This is more sad than anything else.
