OSU Penalties Leaking: Bowl Ban, More Scholarships
The NCAA today stunned Ohio State University’s football program by banning it from postseason play after the 2012 season, multiple sources told The Dispatch.
The penalty means Ohio State automatically is out of the running for any bowl, or a Big Ten or national championship next year, just as newly appointed head coach Urban Meyer is wooing recruits to the Buckeyes.
Athletic Director Gene Smith said previously that while Ohio State has been declared a repeat violator that failed to properly monitor its football program, a bowl ban would be out of line with penalties handed to universities with similar violations.
In its ruling to be made public this afternoon, the NCAA Committee of Infractions will levy the bowl ban and two other penalties on top of the ones the university already imposed on itself, the sources said. The NCAA will:
* Strip four more football scholarships over the next three years on top of Ohio State’s prior forfeiture of five scholarships over that span.
* Add an additional year of probation to OSU’s self-imposed two-year probation for the football program, meaning any violations through the 2013 season could draw harsher-than-normal penalties.
I still think it's weak—what happened to the NCAA's two-eyes-for-an-eye policy?—but it's certainly something, something that OSU insiders have been confidently proclaiming would not happen because they were listening to OSU's idiot athletic director. Who is an idiot.
"Stunned." Yeah, I bet you're stunned. The Ohio State athletic department is also stunned that OSU boosters would want to give free things to football players. Other things that stun the OSU AD:
- The sun rising in the morning.
- Malcolm Gladwell drawing grand conclusions from tenuously connected, dubiously supported facts.
- Troy Woolfolk getting injured.
Ohio State won't win the Big Ten next year, either, Urban Meyer has just lied to a bunch of kids, and they will have a roster maximum of 82 for the next few years. I still think that roster maximum should be something like 79, but it could have gone worse.

NCAA should have punished tOSU with a one year bowl ban and then added an additional year for having played the 2011 Sugar Bowl under false pretenses.

So, do the NCAA sanctions explicitly ban OSU from the B1G Championship Game next year? I never saw that specific reference anywhere.

Sorry if this is already posted. But let's take a look at their punishment in total.
- What would have been a hall of fame coach is gone who went 9-1 against us and is not able to coach ever again.
- They had a terrible season and went 6-6
- They had an interim coach who hurt their 'brand'
- They lost 9 scholarships
- They vacated the entire 2010 season
- Their number one player (pryor) out for year
- Several of their starters inelgible for 1/2 to 7/8 of the season
- They are on probation for 3 years
- Their brand is tarnished
- They lost a bowl game... (really 2, when you add in this years crappy bowl)
- One way or another it will cost their AD his job
All in all.. it seems fair to me... When this story broke last december.. If all the above happened.. wouldn't you be happy?

This idea that the "worst is over" is just dumb. Things are different now. Going forward their AD and HC can't keep effing up again and again and just say "Oops, darn it all! We were a little careless there!". The Big Ten and the NCAA are going to be on them like flies on shit.
Add the fact that they decided to to hired a great football coach with an unfortunate and untimely track record of bending the rules for his players and for pulling little questionable shit like this over and over again:

I mean, the punishment doled out by the NCAA is better than nothing, but it's not going to hinder other schools from breaking the rules in a similar fashion as OSU. Watch the NCAA throw a Gutenberg printing press at Miami (FL) now for their bad deeds.
Also, closing question:
Given these damning results, how is it even possible that OSU has not already terminated the employment of both AD Gene Smith and President Gordon Gee? These shameful events are going to be hanging around their necks for a while to come.

Lying, unapologetic coach left town for NFL coaching job before the shit hit the fan. NCAA Punishment: Trojans get 2 year bowl ban, 30 scholarships lost plus two BCS championships vacated.
Ohio State Buckeyes: 8 players concerned, getting free gifts (tats), money and stealing football equipment, determined ineligible after the fact. Lying and unapologetic coach was terminated before the shit hit the fan, then left for the NFL. NCAA Punishment: 1 year bowl ban, 9 scholarships lost, vacated 2010 season and 2011 bowl victory.
So in this situation where does the NCAA come up with the figure of 9 reduced scholarships?

This will have little to no effect on OSU and Meyer can still come off as telling the truth - this outcome has ZERO effect on a recruits time with OSU. So they don't go to a bowl their first year? BFD.
