One Last Blind Stab In The Dark Comment Count

Let's make a deal.

Saturday Michigan takes on Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl and Sunday something may or may not happen involving the throttling of an infant Denard Robinson in his cradle and the tears and lamentation that may or may not result. That would hypothetically also mean the reign of terror Greg Robinson's hair and the zombie minion that goes by the name of Greg Robinson would be over. The city of Ann Arbor emerging from its cocoon of upper middle class ennui to shoot AK47s in the air would at least partially offset the tragic, still hypothetical loss of baby Denard. I have taken too long on this bit.

Two days later Jim Harbaugh and his Stanford Cardinal take on Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. After he may or may not be destined for Michigan or the 49ers or the moon. The latest from Harbaugh is reminiscent of one Brian Kelly last year:

"I only talk about the job I have now," Harbaugh said when asked if he or his representatives had spoken to the 49ers about their coaching vacancy.

He acknowledged having a "dual focus"—

WHHHAAAA?

--on his team, which will play Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Monday, and on his daughter, Katherine, who was born just before Christmas.

Aw, come on, Harbaugh.

So what's going to happen? I still don't know. No one does. Last time on this show I said I didn't have anything solid and probably wouldn't because of the nature of the "search" but that the mystical aura wasn't looking so hot:

I'm not inclined to put much in the widespread chatter that had RR out the door after the OSU game and seems to be continuing since its sourcing seems to be pissed-off-you-guys folk clearly unhappy with the state of the program taking small interactions and interpreting them as they desire. However, the vibe I'm getting from other people who seem to be on the fence about what to do—or at least close to it—also makes it seem unlikely Rodriguez is back. Emphasis on all the qualifying words in the previous sentence, please. I've got nothing solid because no one does.

I also said that Brady Hoke would be named Michigan's coach over my dead body and the last semblance of sanity in the universe but that wasn't based on inside information. It was more a "has everybody gone CRAZY!?!" moment, and if the threat of Hoke didn't linger in the air I'd apologize for it. As it is I'm on the battlements with an axe* waiting to behead anyone who pops up and says "my name is Buh—." Bill Parcells is duly warned.

With less that a week left before the month of limbo is over, I haven't received anything that pushes my opinion much one way or the other. To reiterate, that's:

  1. There is a nonzero chance Rodriguez is fired, otherwise there would have been an announcement.
  2. Schools do not start coaching searches on January 2nd.
  3. There's only one guy out there that could plausibly be socked away or all but in time for Michigan to have a reasonable finish in recruiting and could justify yet more chaos in a program that is pointed in the right direction, even if vaguely.

So it's Rodriguez or Harbaugh and we'll probably know the day after the Orange Bowl. With all due respect to people who would argue otherwise, it makes no sense to fire Rodriguez in January if you do not have a coach lined up immediately. Since the list of people other than Harbaugh who Michigan could install within a week reads "Buh—[blood theatrically spraying from neck]" your alternatives are between rushing someone through without pause for consideration—which worked out so well last time—or dragging the search almost up to Signing Day, leaving your recruiting class a smoking crater and possibly dooming the next guy, who will forever be Not Jim Harbaugh, to repeat the cycle.

I have heard some things that push me more towards Harbaugh:

  • Some connected guys at Cal email that Tedford is aiming to poach Harbaugh's OL coach since he has "agreed to go elsewhere already" as of the 17th of December. Caveat: the Cal rumor mill bears no animus towards Rodriguez but would love to see Harbaugh anywhere but Stanford, so as things get passed down the chain they get more certain.
  • A player who split his career between RR/Carr years tells an emailer that Harbaugh will be installed on the fifth. Caveat: why the hell would some former player know?
  • An emailer who reports things second hand but has been reliable in the past suggests that Mary Sue Coleman isn't a big fan of Rodriguez, which isn't much of anything to go on but just adds to the pile.
  • Media people I talk to generally say the best thing is probably to give him one more year but that they don't expect he'll get it. Also not much of anything but vibe.

The only thing pointing the other way is the generally sunny disposition coming from within Schembechler Hall, but with recruits the coaches are saying they've got no idea what's going on but if they're still around after the bowl they'll still be around forever, or something to that effect. That's a hard sale right there.

If I was 55-45 Harbaugh a month ago I'm 65-35 Harbaugh now. I wish I could be more certain and wouldn't make the decision I think is likely if I was king of the world, but that's life. We'll know soon enough.

AWFUL BONUS: If there is a change you can go start the Denard transfer watch at DEFCON 2, since Robinson knows what he is—the Big Ten offensive player of the year as a sophomore at quarterback—and where he fits. How screwed up is a program that manages to get both Ryan Mallett and Denard Robinson to transfer away from certain starting QB jobs in the course of three years?

This hasn't happened yet. Breathe. I am talking to myself mostly.

*(To avoid a Tucker Carlson moment let me clarify: I am not going to cut Brady Hoke or anyone's head off with an axe.)

If he was coming back, he'd have been backed by now.

With all the recruiting drama, it could have all ended with one comment from David Brandon, stating that Rich Rodriguez is not going anywhere.  When that didn't happen, I became convinced that the next head coach at Michigan will be Jim Harbaugh.

Assuming JH is here Jan 5, I think the Mallett and DRobs situations are totally different.

RR is/was/always will be a system coach. It's his system. He's always going to run it. That's who he is. Mallett was totally wrong for the system. And -- how can I put this -- he was a jerk on way out even before RR was hired. His teammates hated him. Thus, there was no way these two would stay together.

JH is not a system guy. He is a master motivator who has run multiple offenses, including the zone read option. He's more the CEO type head coach. Someone who evaluates his talent and tailors his schemes accordingly. And hires the right asst. coaches at the right times to match what he needs at any given time. Plus, DRob is a great guy. Everyone loves him.

My guess: on Jan 5, even before JH steps up to the podium, he will have secured DRob for 2011. JH will do whatever it takes to keep the top Heisman candidate, even promising him that he can stay at QB.

Harbaugh has already shown a good amount of offensive flexibility as a head coach.  He ran a spread offense at USD.  Now he primarily runs a pro-style, but has worked in spread elements.  He's demonstrated that he can adapt to personnel.  I see no reason why he couldn't again.

So did Harbaugh hire the right defensive coordinators the 1st 3 years when his defense ranked in the 90-120 range?

Did RR tweak his system to get S. King drafted by having him throw for 4,000yds?

Not saying one is better than the other, but for you to surmise what Harbaugh will do when he gets here is pure folly.  You have no idea.   Harbaugh has proven he will do it his way no matter what.  He's a complete dick, which is good and bad.  He may see Forcier as his kinda guy and tell everyone else to take a walk and he wouldn't bat an eye or give one shit about what you or I think.

Fair criticism. But my point is, JH doesn't have a "his way" like RR did/does. He didn't invent an offense like RR did -- which is all RR knows how to do. Okay, some think JH is a "dick," but nobody accuses him of being an idiot. JH will do whatever it takes to keep DRob.

and call Harbaugh an idiot.  He may have been a pretty good quarterback and may also be a good coach, but as an anonymous internet poster I completely reserve the right to accuse him of being an idiot.  Which I hereby do.  I've seen how he treats Tri-Delts when drunk...

I beg to differ on the defense. We stole JH's DC and then he was run off after one year. Today that same DC has put 'cuse in a bowl with his defense alone. The defense here is a shambles youth not withstanding. It isn't going to get any better without a complete overhaul of the coaches on D and RR's base D phylosophy.

At this point, I've almost stopped caring about whether Harbaugh or Rodriguez is the coach next year.  All I care about is that, whoever the coach is, he be on Dee Hart's doorstep on January 4th.

would be to keep Rodriguez. I think he would get us to double digit wins next year and have a great recruiting class setting up success for years to come.

That being said, I don't think Denard would necessarily transfer if Harbaugh came in. I kind of agree with Germany Shultz above. Harbaugh would just need to get (?keep) the right offensive coordinator. Is there any chance in hell we could keep Calvin Magee? If not, who would he get to run the zone read spread, which seems to be not only the best for us but the best offense anywhere right now (see Oregon and Auburn).

Oregon's offense is not the same as ours.  Chip Kelly does not use his QB as a primary rushing threat.  This year, Darron Thomas rushed 86 times (sacks included) for 488 yards.  In fact, he actually rushed for fewer yards than Andrew Luck did.  I think we might actually move more in Oregon's direction with Harbaugh at the helm (at least as long as Denard is here).  Oregon's QBs are pass-first players.

I think the best thing that could happen to Denard would be to significantly reduce his rushing yards.  I have been convinced that the Michigan hating gods smiled upon us this year by only dinging Denard up and not having him end up with a season ending injury.  As someone else already noted, Denard has a huge amount of talent and moving a bit (notice I said "a bit") more toward a pro-style QB offense might be the best thing that ever happened to him in terms of his NFL future as a QB or show him that another position might be in his best interest.

Either way, a good coach adjusts his team to the players he has and builds around that.

Another tea leaf worth discussing is the Adam Schefter reported rumor from ESPN Gameday on Sunday. Why would that matter? Because Schefter's report wasn't based on a Michigan source, but from and NFL source regarding Carolina, who was thought to be a potential Harbaugh suitor. The report was that Carolina was looking elsewhere because Harbaugh was going to Michigan. Harbaugh isn't speaking to the media about it, and the AD is finally shutting down its leaks, but the NFL is a gossipy league where these things get out. While that doesn't make it gospel, it's likely a better source than others.

I will bet all of my MGoPoints that Denard does not transfer if JH comes. He loves Michigan and his teammates, plus he is smart enough to know that JH will be his bet to be both successful in college and the NFL. And he won't need to relocate and make new friends.

You are comparing a freshman running back that had all of 627 yard rushing career total when RR left to a true sophomore QB who was the Big Ten player of the year and is tailor made to run RR's offense? With Slaton declaring for the NFL after the 2007 season and RR's departure, Devine was assured of then being the starter at WVU. As an RB, Devine could be plugged into virtually any college offense and excel, not Robinson. A better comparison would have been Pat White, but that would have had other problems (like White going into his senior season immediately after RR's departure, with much of the WVU staff still there running what would appear to be the same offense). The demands on a QB on offenses vary, by far unlike any other position. I certainly can see Robinson transferring if RR is let go for a variety of reasons. If the next coach is going to install an offense as suitable to Robinson as the spread read option offense is as suited to, say, Ryan Mallet, then, yeah , I can very much see Robinson leaving. And what better place to start than with where the coach who is most responsible for his success? I am not saying that this is going to happen, but I said I can certainly see it. Please link to me those people who stated that Robinson IS following RR if he leaves, just as you state above.

I agree that Denard obviously loves Michigan but he also has to look at what he wants. He came to Michigan under a system that would allow for his talents & desire (to be a QB) to both be met.

Just because he's a spread QB doesn't mean he can't switch positions in the NFL -- he's an athlete. He's not Michael Vick. He's not Eric Crouch either, but that's one guy who played QB for his whole college career and then got drafted as a safety. Denard, being the athlete that he is, could live his dream of playing QB in college and then live another dream of playing in the NFL (at another position, that scouts think he'd be best at in the NFL).

I was watching the Maryland game and they were talking about the coaching vacancy.  They seemed to dance around RR's name without saying RR.  They did say that Maryland plans to name a new coach possibly as early as Jan 4th and that the new coach will be more offensively inclined than the Big Guy.  After reading the RR to MD thread I am starting to think that's where he goes and MD rules the ACC for many years to come.

This unknown(ness) is starting to feel like scheduling a major operation and counting days until it happens.  The hope is that one will be better after the surgery, but the pain/discomfort and the possibility that it will not go well regardless how small that chance, make the anticipation almost unbearable.

Ideally, RR just "becomes" Maryland's coach (or elsewhere) on Jan 4th without really being fired by us. He deserves to land on his feet. Then on the 5th, JH is announced our HD. So, many might ask why has RR been recruiting so hard for UM. Because he's working on building relationships that he can turn to when/if he's coach somewhere else in a few days. Just a theory.

I am a Harbaugh guy. He is just what we need. At the same time, I hate "one more year" for Rodriguez.  If you are Mr. Brandon and you bring Rich back, you gotta give him the long term treatment publicly and spare everyone the 1 of 27 sports line.

To effectively recruit, he needs that stability. To get a viable defensive coordinator, he needs that stability.  It does no one any good to repeat the lame duck year in 2011. If he stays, sell out fully and completely to the Rich Rodriguez end game for this program.

I will freely admit that the endless speculation has hampered Rich and undercuts the potential of what he can do here.   If he only had come in and approached things more incrementally, built stronger relationships with our veterans and had a better plan for building the defense, I doubt any of this job stuff would be an issue right now. We'd have been to 3 bowls rather than 1 and we'd have more size and numbers on defense.

Brian said it a couple months ago: Rich made a huge mistake coming in and not recruiting more defense with his half of the 08 class.

Coaches signing on with extended contracts, and buyout clauses.  Negotiating extensions when the time is right.  I mostly agree with you!

Remember, only the media lived off the "is 7-5 enough?  Does he have to beat XXX?" rubric.  It was excruciating, if your life was built around listening to sportstalk radio.  For his part, David Brandon clearly, unequivocally, repeatedly, consistently rejected that talk.  We have Rich Rodriguez under contract.  He's our head coach.

Section 1

December 30th, 2010 at 2:33 PM ^

So, Rich Rodriguez has been treated unfairly, and undermined, and has not yet been given a real chance to fulfill his potential.  He desperately needs a good DC, and in fact he originally chose a good DC [Jeff Casteel] who sadly never made it to Ann Arbor, but...

And so now the answer is to fire Rodriguez.

I Wrote a 4 Wo…

December 30th, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^

Well to be fair to NateVolk,

He said he's in the Harbaugh camp but thinks a decision should be made on RichRod because this limbo crap will end up hurting the program more than whoever is coaching will. I doesn't think we should necessarily fire RichRod, but if we are then we should now.

I like Rich Rod, for the record, but I just thought I should help clarify.
