Ondre Pipkins Suffers Neck Injury, Hospitalized For Precautionary Reasons Comment Count

News broke earlier this morning that a Huron Valley Ambulance had been dispatched to Schembechler Hall for a potential spinal injury. It appears freshman defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins was the player in question, according to a short press statement from the athletic department:

Brady Hoke Statement on Ondre Pipkins
Ondre injured his neck during practice this morning. He had movement
in all extremities and was taken to U-M Health System for
precautionary reasons and evaluation.

In a case like this, it's obviously very good news that Pipkins has movement in his extremities. This story will be updated as more news comes out. For now, keep Ondre in your thoughts and prayers; let's hope this is all just precautionary and there's no serious injury.

UPDATE: A couple more details from AnnArbor.com's Kyle Feldscher, who was the first to report about the injury:

Thoughts with Ondre, the medical, and the rehab staff to make sure 1) Ondre has no serious issues or injuries, and 2) he makes a speedy recovery back to 100%. Really a bummer to get such an injury in your freshman year when playing time was expected. He's got plenty of time to recover and prove himself though. I have faith Hoke and Co. won't push it with him.

Injuries in football happen, and what happened to Wormley and to Pipkins could happen to anyone on the team, but I do know that tendons, ligaments, and bones of 18 year olds are still maturing, and often don't mature as fast as as skeletal muscle. That's why throwing freshmen on the field is dangerous. They may look college ready, but often the parts that break under stress are not as ready as they need to be.

After waking up to this news, and having to work a 12-hour shift on this beautiful Saturday, I'm quite depressed. I plan on heading to work, listening to Brand New (my emo standby), and stew over being dumped by my girlfriend from my senior year of high school, Melanie. (Who, upon further review was probably just a 6, but had a nice rack.)

Seriously though, God bless, Ondre!

I'm hoping he just wanted to go to the hospital to get a real meal, after the coaches have had him eating like a anorexic model.

In all seriousness though, glad to hear the hospital trip is precautionary, and hope everything is alright with the kid (least of all concerns being football)

Aye yo Pee-Wee, get well homey!  Seriously, though, you have a great future ahead of you.  You're a football player first and foremost, though you may have a comedian career ahead of you.  Get well man.
