The Oklahoma No-Huddle

Sequence of events:

2008 Fiesta Bowl: West Virginia played Oklahoma and whomped them - absolutely whomped them - due to WVU no-huddle. The Sooners had never seen anything like them and it was intriguing, so they visited RR in Ann Arbor to learn more.

2008-2009 CFB Season - Oklahoma becomes the point a minute offense and proceeds to hang 60+ on almost everyone in the Big 12. National Championship run as a result

Summer 2009 - RR visits Norman to talk about the Sooners unique-no huddle (Even Urban Meyer was fascinated by it and is reportedly trying to incorporate elements of it at Florida) and probably brought a boatload of info back to Ann Arbor.

I doubt our offense this year is gonna be hanging 50 points on anyone, but next season it's a definite possibility. Does anyone think that elements of the Oklahoma offense might make it up here...discuss.

I know a major part of the Oklahoma offense was the Tight End addition, which RR supposedly took a lot of interest in. That'd be nice. I don't know how much more of it they learned of or incorporated, but it can't be bad to have some of it.

One of the major criticisms of the trolls and naysayers was that RR is "stubborn" and consequently "can't change his offense to fit his personnel."

We knew that was a bunch of horse-pucky anyway, but it is nice to hear that RR is interested in a tweak that someone else did to his system. It shows that he is not above learning from those he has taught. It also shows that he is open to improving his system and doesn't plan to stop growing as a coach anytime soon.

I find in funny that what goes around comes around in the college football coaching ranks. Moreso,(is that a word) the idea of them sharing things so openly. You would think this would be a tighter arms race, keeping things close to the vest. I know that some of these guys are friends and most coaching trees are from the same trunk if you will, but why would these high powered schools share so much with each other? I can't see Bo and staff heading down to Nebraska to meet with Osborn(sp) and swapping trade secrets.

RR has been working with Oklahoma for a few years now. RR claims that early on he visited with Northwestern, and they basically took his entire offense. They even used same signals and lingo. Kevin Wilson the OC now at Oklahoma, worked as Northwestern's OC from 99-01. So I assume the offense are still very similar.

My hope is that RR really takes a look at OU's route packages. They seem to get the job done better than RR's. They use more over the middle and late developing routes. RR almost had no one crossing the middle at the 5-8 yard range (think old stevie b routes) If RR is really working to use his tightends and update his passing package this offense could get scary.

to throw over the middle, and especially not late developing routes, IMO. I too noticed that and was curious initially, then when how bad our QB's were became apparent, along with our inexperienced line, it made sense. I hope we can do more of both this year, especially the tight end, because though it's a cliche, the TE is an inexperienced QB's best friend.

I love the idea of incorporating tight ends into our offense. IMO the development of Koger was one of the positives to come from last season. Also, these rumblings of Webb doing well in the spring makes me even more excited about the prospect. If only they can learn to block...
