Ohio State Postgame Presser: Jim Harbaugh Comment Count

Adam Schnepp

[Upchurch/MGoBlog]

Can you just share what your message to the team was after this tough loss?

“That was for the team, not for public consumption.”

Obviously they’re a big read-option team. What were they doing, and why did you think your defense struggled so much to stop the run today?

“Yeah, they’re very good and they got after us running the football and I think the number one thing was we weren’t tackling well enough.”

Any thoughts on Jake Rudock having to end the regular season on the sidelines?

“Uh, it’s what happened. Went down on his shoulder. I don’t know how serious it is. AC to the left shoulder.”

Could you just talk about some of the improvements throughout the season from when you took over in fall camp to this point now? Obviously this isn’t the result you were looking for, but 9-3 on your first year.

“Well, yeah. We’ve talked about it many times. Very proud of the team: the way they’ve worked, the way they’ve progressed, and we’ll just stay at that. Closed quite a bit of ground. Still more ground to close on, but knowing our team they’ll stay with it.”

You talked about putting steel in your spine from previous losses. Is that what this is more of, especially against a rival like Ohio State?

“Well, we got beat. Didn’t play well enough in the game to win it, but we’re gonna regroup, come back with the same drive and aspirations that we’ve had: win the next game.”

You said earlier in the week that you thought Jabrill was a really good running back, and obviously we saw more of him. Were we going to see more of him used in the second half if the game had been a little bit tighter?

“Uh, yeah, he was in the second half.”

[Hit THE JUMP to see my question go over as successfully as the rest]

Would we have seen more of him in the second half-

“You saw him in the second half.”

MGoQuestion: Especially early in the game, you went with three down linemen. What did you see on film from them that led to that decision?

“Uh…what led to- we didn’t stop the run well enough. I’m not gonna talk about schematics with you. Never do, so not gonna start now.”

Obviously injuries had taken their toll on your defensive line coming in. Did you think that depth was an issue today in your inability to stop the run?

“No, we’re not making any excuses. We didn’t win the game, and we’ll regroup. They played better.”

Your thoughts about the penalty on the attempt to block the punt in the first half.

“I don’t have any thought on it.”

The way Ohio State lost last week, they certainly seemed like they came in hungry, motivated, all that. Was it a level that you guys couldn’t quite reach? Did you see that difference in the way they came out?

“I don’t know about that. They played very well and they deserve credit. They played a very good football game and played much better than we did.”

You mentioned you guys had covered some ground this season and you have some more ground to cover. What areas specifically are you kind of looking at or is it too early to dive into that? What kind of ground is left to cover for this team?

“Yeah, no need to dive into that, as you said. We’ll regroup and come back with the same aspirations: win the next football game.”

Jim, along those line, as Jake [Butt] said about the passing game, you guys have made strides in the passing game. He said in a game like this you’d have to be damn near perfect. Just your thoughts on passing today and throughout the season.

“You talked to him already?”

Yeah. Jake Butt.

“Was that- was there a question there?”

Yeah, just your thoughts on the progress of the passing this season.

“Uh, yeah. It’s been good. Continue to strive to keep improving in all areas.”

It looked like you stopped and said something to Ezekiel Elliott coming off the field. What were your thoughts on his game today?

“He played really good. He’s a heck of a player and congratulated him on a good game.”

14-10 at the half. Did you feel like the game was going in a direction you could win it, or were there signs you were concerned about even in the first half when you were keeping it close?

“Yeah, we felt like we could win it at halftime.”

Honest question: Why do they have this presser? I can't imagine the coach likes doing this and I don't see the benefit for the team. When we win, I can understand a press conference, but when we lose they should just cancel. It's not like any losing coach ever says anything useful, and I'm not sure they can say anything that will be helpful to the fans. A simple press release would cover "the other team played well and we got beat" part. Plus, they have other press conferences with the head coach during the week.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to wait until the day after the loss. This press conference is painfully uncomfortable for him and the reporters and really, not very satisfying for the fan. A day would give him some time to reflect on the game and give some actual answers to questions.

I'm not going to defend bad tackling. It is the most basic aspect of the game. And I don't expect him to get into scheme in a presser. But being outnumbered in the box means you are often covering more space and not getting much help. It is hard to get great pad leverage and make great accurate hits when the target is not very constrained in his path and has options to evade. So you end up with glancing blows on a great running QB or a first round pick tailback. I would've chosen to die through the air and hoped for the best possible lucky day of rps as opposed to being ground to death like that. One man's opinion.

Thee were several times that OSU came out with 3 or 4 receivers flanked way out with single coverage and us with 8 or 7 in the box.  Then, they run the read option and it's almost like playing 7 on 7 with a strong OL and an NFL-caliber RB.  They were creating space with the formations.

It felt like everything swung to OSU's side when the refs called that personal foul.  I was sitting there with my mouth open, wondering how anyone could think that was a reasonable call.

Does ANYONE think that call was reasonable?

It's a shame because they made a great stand and were about to have good field position. I understand going for the block but with the rules the way they are I think it was too risky at that time. If he blocks it the game may have been closer but he didn't and the worst thing possible happened. They got all the mo

No, it was not a reasonable call.  It should've been a 5 yard penalty.  But penalty or no penalty, we had about a 1% chance of winning that game combining the way they were running the ball and our inability to stop it.  I don't care if we took a 10 point lead in the first half, I still think it would've crumpled based on our inability to stop the run.

It should have just been a 5 yard peanlty and 4th and 3!  Yeah, that seem to swing momentum. The defesne was playing well up that point. I don't think the B1G refs like Harbaugh so he will just have to build a team to where we whip other teams to the point where a refs call will not even matter.

I've only ever seen a personal foul called on this when the punter gets tackled or bumped.

A couple OSU players ran into their own kicker.  The Michigan player took evasive action and very slightly grazed the punter.

I'm just in shock that anyone could think that deserved a personal foul to give OSU the first down.

Could've probably been called as a 5 yard running into the kicker instead of roughing, but he better question would be why they hell are you trying a block when we're sure to get the ball inside the 50.
Probably doesn't change the outcome of the game, because we didn't have an answer for their run game, but it was a momentum-changing play

There are a lot of folks posting above who know more than me about football strategy, but I find the poor tackling rationale for our loss to be unpersuasive.  Yes, there were too many missed tackles, but there were also big holes, and situations where only one guy was in a position to even make a tackle near the line of scrimage.

I suppose that you are rarely going to hear a coach criticize his DC's scheme for public consumption, but I saw Barrett and Elliott both getting a lot of yards in space, not just by breaking tackles.  A good read option offense is hard to stop when it's hitting on cylinders, but I feel like we tried to defend everything (leaving a safety deep much of the game for instance) when a better approach would have been to sell out a bit on the run and hope Barrett missed through the air.

Yes, our DLine was depleted, and our LBs are under-talented to face this kind of offense run by elite players.  This was a perfect storm that no amount of scheme was going to fix it.

We held on as long as we could, but the masking tape and coathanger wires eventually came off and the thing collapsed.

We would lose this game 100 times out of 100 times with the lineup we were able to field on Saturday.  It's just where we are right now.  Time to move on.

Yup. That's how stae beat em. Weather and a strong and healthy d line. Not the speediest or most athletic Lb's but good enough. But it's that strong, deep, and healthy D line that was the key to keeping contain on the RO and pushing the tackles across the LOS and disrupting the timing. We just didn't have the physical strength or personnel to do it on a consistent basis. With R Glasgow and Mone rotating in I think it's another ball game. We may not have ended up with a W but we sure don't give up that many points IMO.

Indiana gave OSU the script to beat us and we came out with no answer to it. That's not on the players, it's on the staff.

Harbaugh should be upset. After a full year of practices and a full season of games we got our asses whipped in an unequivocal manner. It's not that we lost, it's how we lost. I don't believe the team, the players are as bad as they looked yesterday. But our D was totally gassed for no apparent reason in the 2nd half and Durkin had nothing dialed up to stop what OSU was obviously going to try to do.

We couldn't stop that stretch against Indiana; there was no way we were going to stop it against a massively better OSU. It wasn't scheme. Reading all the FFFF and pre-game MGoBlog analysis, it was obvious the match ups were all their strengths fitting perfectly against our weaknesses. This looked as bad going in as it was in outcome. Only hope we had was they were deflated by what happened last weekend instead of fired up by it. We know which it was

I have not been more upset about an OSU game since 1968. The result of that game fueled our performance in 1969. I am confident that Harbaugh will recruit with enthusiasm unknown to mankind and we will get revenge. He will never forget. Love our coach and staff. Love the team and look forward to getting better each and every day. Forever.

From the time the score was 35-13 yesterday, it looked like it was shaping up to be a repeat of 1968, when OSU scored a TD to make the score 48-14 and then went for 2 with star running back Jim Otis coming back in the game to run it in.  I was afraid that Urban wanted to out-do Woody, 50-13.  I think he was unhappy he didn't get that last touchdown and let Elliott get the sure 2 points.

Wow, can anger make memory play tricks!  I saw that game on closed-circuit tv at Crisler Arena, which was then called the All-Events Building.  Like everyone else who ws there, I have been angry about Woody going for two ever since.  But over the years, I forgot that OSU didn't make the attempt.  In my memory, I can see Otis taking it in.  I must have been blind with rage.

Now I'm glad to know we stopped them!

We may have that top-notch QB next year, if O'Korn can play like he did in 2013 at Houston.  As for the D, we should have excellent depth on the DL next year, with everyone coming back except (probably) Ojemudia.  If we come into the game with a healthier, loaded DL, that will significantly mitigate any issues we might have at linebacker.

The last win in Columbus was in 2000.  But it's also been awhile since we've taken a good team down there.

Yeah D was a massive disappointment yesterday.  Mone, Oje, Glasgow = major losses but even with them in I see OSU gashing us repeatedly.

Upgrades at DL, LB, RB, QB and OL incoming.

Here's the thing though: Ohio State scored on six straight drives if you don't count the end of half drive they had. If we had just Glasgow, that's a few more third and longs that they might be forced to throw on and maybe we get them off the field a few times. You just need to win one series of a plays a drive to win that drive. Would we have won? Dunno, but we are maybe in it the whole way instead of out of it by the end of the third quarter.

Right. I wouldn't even blame Kinnel for that. He was a fraction or a second away from blocking it and Chesson wasn't, which is why he pulled up. I'm sure they're coached to go for it if they think it's a good shot. Just didn't get lucky this time.

1.  It was a gutsy call and if it worked would have been the right call.  Johnson has a big leg at times and it could have gotten a nice bounce if Peppers misjudges it.

2.  We were slow on the first punt and we had an unbalanced line.  Their guys got a piece of another punt.  Clearly they saw something and tried to exploit it.  Unfortunately it didn't work.

3.  Johnson is rugby style.  If he didn't move to the right the jump by Kinnell would have gotten the ball (then the leg) which isn't a penalty.  Usually roughing is hitting the plant leg, which Kinnell maybe brushed with his foot.  Need a better angle than this.

4.  Flip the uniforms and that is probably running into the kicker for me.  But the landing was so ugly I can see why they called roughing.
