June 15th is annually a notable day for Michigan basketball because John Beilein play it by the book and you're not supposed to offer rising juniors until that date, and this year was no exception: Michigan offered and picked up an immediate commitment from instate big Taylor Currie. Ace described him as "American Moe Wagner," and that would be just fine with me.

Two more offers went out as well, both to instate players: New Haven SF Romeo Weems and Redford PG/SG Rocket Watts. Both are high-level prospects and names, so… yeah. Very Important Recruits, they are.

Nobody's talked to Weems yet since he's in Argentina with the USA U16s but Andrew Kahn caught up with Watts:

“I’d be open to anything. But I’d like to stay home. If I stay, my family could come see me play a lot.” …

“I don’t want to come in and play behind somebody. I want to get good minutes and play.”

Michigan's ability to offer immediate playing time to a guard in the 2019 class depends on how much and how rapidly the gents currently on the roster develop. They'll lose both backcourt starters (Simmons and MAAR) after this year; Eli Brooks and Jordan Poole will be sophomores; Xavier Simpson will be a junior. That may be a difficult situation to sell early playing time in, or the curse of Beilein could strike and someone ends up in the draft. Lotta ins, lotta outs.

Nance

Next year's class appears to be rapidly sorting itself out. PG David DeJulius—a new member of the ESPN 100 at #84—will likely be joined by two or three players in the next few months as Michigan sets its sights on a five-man class. The most likely addition at this juncture appears to be OH PF Pete Nance, who is more or less down to Michigan and Northwestern with Ohio State trying to get back in after their coaching change. Scout's Brian Snow asserts that while Nance is one of those ghost recruits who doesn't do much talking, expectations from the plugged in folks are that Michigan "will be very tough to beat." He looks set to make a decision after visits to Northwestern and Michigan at the end of this month, so there will not be much time for OSU to get back in.

Snow also asserts that Nance is more of a jumbo wing than a post, mitigating some concerns he is not a swaggy dawg who will eat rebounds off your face. I agree with that based on this UMHoops scouting video:

Nance's offensive game is very very Zak Irvin. He's got enough handle that his HS team uses him as a press breaker on occasion; he can drive but his lack of quickness means he's often pulling up for a jumper unless he catches someone closing out way too hard. He's looks much more like a Michigan 4 than a post. Caveat: Nance is very far from a finished product physically and his father and brother were both posts; he could continue expanding until the 5 is his home. Wagner was supposed to be a wing when he committed, after all.

I wouldn't get too worried about Nance not filling it up at NBPA. He's a developmental guy with a lot of skill a la DJ Wilson. Beilein's turned guys like him into first round picks repeatedly.

Michigan will take at least one more wing sort and possibly two given the names on the board. One who is no longer on that board: RI PF Cole Swider, who got offered by Duke and rejiggered his list. Michigan did not make his final four. Happy trails.

Canadian combo forward Ignas Bradzeikis told Evan Daniels that he won't cut his list down until the end of summer, whereupon he'll take a suite of visits. Michigan was the first name out of his mouth when asked for a list of schools coming after him, FWIW. Daniels manages to get sort of a top three-to-five out of him by asking about coaching relationships: Michigan, Florida, and UConn followed by Baylor and Vanderbilt.

OH combo forward Jerome Hunter is the second top level wing target; he is fresh off hitting the top 50 in the most recent ESPN rankings release. His recruitment hasn't moved recently.

For the longest time, Hunter had listed Michigan, Xavier, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Butler among his top schools. Ohio State had offered previously but did not pursue Hunter aggressively again until after Bazley de-committed in April.

“It’s still all the same schools,” Hunter said … Asked if he has a timeline to make his college choice, Hunter said, “No, it’s wide open right now. I’m not sure when I will be ready.”

It would have been nice for Michigan to scoop up Hunter in the midst of OSU's turmoil; now they'll have to fend off a guy in a stable situation. Snow thinks Xavier has a slight advantage right now.

East Lansing combo forward Brandon Johns is coming off visits to Indiana and Purdue; like Hunter he's not tipping much of anything in public.

“People definitely mention that I’m locked into [staying in state]. That’s definitely not true,” he said. “I’m still open. It’s kind of iffy if want to leave or stay. I’m not really sure yet. That’s what I’m trying to find out, why I’m taking these visits … to see what I'm more comfortable with.”

Snow actually thinks that MSU is amongst the less likely choices for Johns right now. Admittedly fuzzy situation.

Michigan seems confident that they'll get at least two of the above players. Instate combo forward Gabe Brown has been surging up recruiting boards. He picked up an MSU offer two days ago. Brown visited Ann Arbor on June 5th… and left without an offer in hand. Brown, like DeJulius, just cracked the ESPN 100. Michigan's hesitancy there hopefully portends good things.

The guard situation is less salutary. With the Stanford commitment of Cormac Ryan, the only guy currently on the radar with a shortlist featuring Michigan is Robbie Carmody. Carmody recently visited Purdue; Notre Dame is also a strong contender. Yea, Michgian must sway him from the dark side:

But there's also a lifelong affinity for Notre Dame — "I've always been a huge, huge Notre Dame football fan," he said — and Michigan has made a compelling case as well."

Michigan is unlikely to be the favorite here. As of a month ago he'd set up trips to ND and Purdue while the Michigan official was still in the "probably" phase.

Michigan's expanded their search, bringing in KY SG CJ Frederick. Frederick didn't get an offer per Josh Henschke:

- While he was not offered during the visit, the coaching staff told him that they need to see him live in July before making a decision, says he feels like he's in a good position to receive an offer.

He's more likely to than Brown since Carmody seems like he's headed elsewhere and Michigan doesn't have many other fish on the line.

Michigan will have just Jordan Poole as a pure SG after this season—Ibi Watson and Charles Mathews may or may not be good fits there—and may wait for a late riser if they don't get Carmody. It worked out okay with MAAR.

I have had the misfortune to coach against Weems multiple times. He is the real deal. He's better as a sophomore than James Young was.

Of course, who knows how it will pan out.  But I'm confident that Beilein will develop every guy that signs up.  Hopefully, we will continue to be a regular in the Dance and the interest from top recruits won't be an issue.

Someone on Sam's board who saw Currie play recently said he's not like any big man under Beilein. They compared him to Matt Costello. Just fwiw.

But I though Currie was a good shooter? And Costello was not a shooter at all. Something doesn't compute. Was Costello a good shooter in high school or is this a "you white, you Ben Affleck" situation?

Michigan might have another SG option on the line, so to speak, in the event Carmody heads elsewhere. I'm almost positive I read that top 100, 4* prospect Noah Locke is visiting the week.

Also, it seems like a lot of people who might know, both on this blog and the Michigan hoops twittersphere, aren't nearly as high on Nance as his rankings would suggest. Ant Wright even recently said that landing Nance could ruin our class and I remmebr mattd mentioning how he would not offer Nance at all after seeing him live. Why the disperity?

also said that DJ Wilson was a bad offer by JB and wouldn't amount to much a few years ago. Now DJ Wilson is being mocked at 1st round. MattD goes around and see a lot of prospects and gives out opinions based on what he sees which I can respect. Don't take it as gold because he is sometimes wrong because evaluating HS players in both football and basketball takes a lot of projections.

JB have had misses but he had a lot of hits which is important in the big picture of recruiting.

I am pretty bummed that we arent going to land a single one of Bieniemy, Ryan, or Carmody.

Fingers are extra crossed that Hunter comes aboard.

2018: Carmody - we do not lead but are certainly among the top group as his visit schedule would suggest. I talk with Robby on a fairly regular basis, and if I had to predict today it wouldn't be for the good guys. That said, visits can sway things along with decisions of other prospects. He's more of an instant impact type based on his motor and college ready frame. Would love to have him in Ann Arbor. Think a better version of Zak Novak Nance - I haven't had any contact with him at all, but making an educated guess based on available info it seems he's going to commit sooner rather than later, and maybe on his OV in a few weeks. I've seen him play live and was not impressed to be candid. He's a developmental project in every facet of the game exclusive of passing IMO. He's a long way from contributing at the HM level. He certainly will not be among the top 100-125 when my initial rankings are released within the next week or so. That said, perhaps with JB's acumen for development he's an impact player as an upperclassmen. Hunter Tyson - have not spoken directly to him or his camp, but based on pure speculation, his recruiting profile, and skillset, I'd say he probably gets offered in a few weeks and likely accepts shortly thereafter. Tyson is a developmental project as well IMO. He's Duncan Robinson-esque - lacks foot speed, has good size/length, needs a lot of work on his ballhandling, more verticality than DR though, but certainly not the same level of shooter, although he is above average in that regard. Noah Locke - no contact with him either, will likely be offered tomorrow. Not a prospect that is likely to be on commit watch, still the exploratory stage for Locke. He's an elite shooter off the catch or the dribble, but he has a limited handle and he's not a good athlete. He's an undersized SG at 6'2. Will probably be a good catch and shoot type in college but will not be an Iso guy that breaks down the D with superb ballhandling and finishing ability. Reminds me a bit of Bryn Forbes Johns - I talk with Brandon/his camp on an occasional basis, and Michigan is definitely among the schools being strongly considered but we don't lead (there isn't a clear leader). I think he may be looking for an offer from a blue blood program, which may or may not happen. If not, then our chances are as good as any other school. I wasn't as high as most other analysts on Johns last year when they had him as a top 20 type, as he simply isn't that caliber of player, but I do like his improved motor a lot on the glass based on what I've seen this year. He has a nice looking strike, good athleticism, a college ready frame and good ballhandling......he's just not aggressive enough at times on offense. Cosmetically (not production), Johns reminds of Paul Pierce. A legit 6'8, 225, can put the ball on the floor for a dribble or two and hit perimeter shots with more athleticism than you think. Would definitely like to have him Ignas Brazdeikis - no contact with him. Seems to be high on Michigan with the Stauskas connection and all. He's a very valuable guy to have on a college team. Tall/Strong enough and physical enough to be a good rebounder, while being skilled enough in terms of ballhandling/passing to be a secondary playmaker from the wing. He's a decent shooter, but not the knockdown shooter everyone assumes he is. The great thing (from a UM perspective) is that he's not a great athlete, so you're likely looking at an instant impact/Non NBA type which is rare indeed. Jerome Hunter - I talk with Jerome very often and I'd say we're among his top 4-5 schools. He is the key to the entire class IMO. Has the size, skill and athletic ability to play the 2, 3, or 4 spot in college. He's certainly going to be a top 50 player when my initial rankings are released. Think he would be the absolute perfect fit at Michigan. Basically a smaller version of DeShawn Sims with a better shot. Knockdown shooter with very good footwork in the post and above average/good athleticism. I'm really hoping we can land Jerome.

On the board. Based on what Ive seen live that certainly shouldn't be the case.Gabe is a better athlete and a better shooter despite popular perception. Bottom line is that JB is the chief recruiter, and in some ways, the only recruiter on the staff. Tyson is a JB recruit, Gabe is an asst coach recruit. That about sums it up

but he's too soft for Izzo.  I'd be suprised if he ended up there.  Good player, great skills just a little soft.  Still time to correct that.  Definately isn't tipping his hand

Gotta feel for John Beilein.

He does not recruit well enough to get those immediate impact players.  So he has to take guys that need to be developed for a year or two.

That he does very well.  So well that a bunch of them leave early, right after being developed.

So you get a bunch of guys like Derrick Walton who blow up midway through their first meaningful season of play.

Then they leave.

It's good enough to make some noise in the NCAA tournament, but they come on so late in the season that Michigan is always fighting against a poor seed.

Beilein basically gets a one-shining-moment March out of these guys . . . and that's about it.  Then they are gone.

It's got to be a frustrating way to live.

Gabe Brown to MSU.  Gave a heart felt commitment letter that he basically promised his father before he died that he would play basketball for Tom Izzo.  AS soon as MSU offered we were out of it.

Sucks, because Brown is one of the most underrated recruit in the country IMO, he grew a couple inches and is now over 6-8 with mad hops and quickness.  He could have been a star in Beilein's offense, he's an NBA player waiting to happen, and his ranking will be top 40 or 50 soon.
