With signing day just around the corner and still no commit from D.Robinson, and with Austin Dantin coming in this weekend for his visit do you think he'll commit if we do offer him and/if what does this do to a uncommitted D.Robinson?
2 shits about whether Dantin gets an offer-he is much better, supposedly. I think the effect works in reverse - if Dantin gets an offer that means we are screwed with Robinson and RR is constructing his backup plan. I'd love to have both, but I doubt RR would use 2 scollies in this situation.
Robinson's coach says that he thinks Michigan is in Robinson's top two, although he's not sure which school would hold the other spot. We're still very much in it for Robinson.
Rodriguez would gladly use three scholarships at QB this year if it means he gets a couple elite athletes and doesn't have the same situation he had last year. Besides that, there's always the chance that Robinson will move to receiver or cornerback. So even if he got commits from all three QB's, he might only end up with two QB's from this class.
I wouldn't be surprised if Dantin commits if/when he gets an offer, but I don't think it will affect Robinson at all.
If he does get offered that would give us 3 QB's in this class with out Robinson, on film Robinson looks better, but Dantin has some upside as well, I would hope that competition wouldn't scare Robinson away from us, but ya never know with HS kids.
3 Qb's without Robinson:
1. Tate Forcier
2. Austin Dantin
That's what happens when you open 5 threads at once, then get to the last one and make a comment on a post at the bottom. Someone beats you by 5 minutes when you think you're going to be clever.
If we got Dantin, that would give us:
????? (Stallworth? He'll be a slot guy dollars to donuts)
Nadar Furrha would be the 3rd
True, I guess I was thinking of scholarship guys.
I still want Denard. Hardcore.
That came out weird.
I was thinking of players that could conceivably play.
between Furrah and Dantin? as far as I can tell, its pretty much just a Florida address.
The scouting services bothered to go see one of them? One of them has offers from other D-I schools? One of them was good enough to warrant an offer from us, though we are admittedly getting to the bottom of our list, and the other wasn't?
I don't think Dantin would ever play either, but often these scholarship offers are extended conditionally, as in we take Dantin only if we don't get Robinson.
App St, CMU, Toledo, Air Force & Army. They might be high on him but this stinks of desperation.
As for the the Rivals rating I was comparing their videos, because if I had to guess I'd say that Austin Dantin got scouted while they were on the scene to evaluate his 4-star WR teammate James Green.
I wonder if this argument came up about Sheridan the year that he walked on...
In all likelihood he isn't going to pan out. We can speculate about a diamond in the rough all we want, but this was what we heard last year about the late offer to Feagin and that experiment lasted all of three weeks.
We've already got Sheridan for two more years, Cone for two, Threet for three and Forcier for four (or five). If we sign Dantin and then an actual legitimate QB prospect in the 2010 class you're looking at 6 scholarship QBs, unless you start ripping them and intimidating people into transferring.
Actually Sheridan and Cone were both RS Sophomores this year, and I would be surprised if either one stayed around after they graduate.
but was that a Morales type scholarship or a full fledged "until you leave the program" scholarship?
Yea, I'm pretty sure the Sheridan scholarship was a one year deal.
All scholarships are one-year renewable. So, every year, RR has to decide who gets a scholarship for the next year. Nobody gets a 4-year scholarship.
with his dad being a former coach at Michigan and a current NFL d-coordinator I don't think you can rip his scholarship. Maybe thats just me playing it safe, but it doesn't seem like a great way to make friends at the school and in coaching circles.
Feagin also had a shot to contribute at safety or slot receiver. We're not looking to Dantin for an immediate fix. He's probably a depth guy or maybe a guy who can start in three or four years. He's strictly a QB, and he would be practicing full-time at QB for two or three years (probably) before he had a shot at seeing the field. It's not the same thing as Feagin.
Besides that, it's getting down to crunch time and we don't have a full class. Would you rather have a low-rated offensive lineman to fill up the class when we have a bunch already? Or would you rather have an extra QB, a position that doesn't have much depth or talent?
we'd better have a four or five star QB thats either a senior or a third year sophomore starting at QB. Its like saying that David Cone gives us depth.
Given our current depth chart I'd rather they use that scholarship on a 3-star DB, because we can't count on landing Marvin Robinson, Cullen Christian, Lo Wood and Dior Mathis in one class replenish our defensive backfield.
No, in fact, it's not like saying David Cone gives us depth. They're different players, and Dantin is 10 times as athletic as Cone. So that comparison doesn't make sense.
Regardless, the coaches' jobs and the team's success rests more on their quarterback play than their cornerback play. So I'm okay with an offer to Dantin. He might not work out, but he might be a stud.
Sometimes you just have to trust the staff. They see things that others don't see. Maybe something you can't quantify on film or isn't necessarily a tangible thing. Don't forget Tom Brady didn't get an offer until his dad sent Michigan a tape of him. Now I am not saying Dantin is Tom Brady, I am just saying never close the door on the next Brady.
I would rather us only sign quality players and have some open scholarships for next year's class, which looks like it could be one of our best classes in years. A lot of kids have expressed early desires to play for Michigan next year and i dont understand wasting offers on kids who might not see the field in the entire career at Michigan. I personally think that we will sign 24-26 players this year. We have 20 commits now with two possible de-commits in Graves and Jones. So we have some flexibility. IMO, we still have a decent shot landing the following:
Denard Robinson and Witty- seems to be a package deal
Je'Ron Stokes- had a great visit and close to Gallon at ARMY game. Plus, his brother is a good QB recruit next year.
Willie Haulstead- might be in good position b/c Fla St might yank his offer. They lost some scholarships due to cheating scandal.
Sam Mongomery- though it will be tough to get him from LSU,UNC, South Carolina, and Tenn.
Marcus Hall- us, Ohio St, or Miami
Travante Stallworth- us, Auburn, or South Carolina
Remember this is just my opinion and i stress this. I think the other recruits like Quinton Washington, Bennie Logan and others are going to go to a in-state school
Taking Dantin this year would not effect, at all our ability to take 25 players next year. We almost definitely will have 25 spots available. Finally, yes, we have a chance at getting the guys you list above, but what are the chances of getting all of them? About 0.5%? How about HALF of them? Maybe 10%?
Of that list, Hall, Montgomery, and Haulstead seem exceedingly unlikely.
I dont want to do %'s. Its too much of a hassle but i honestly believe we will land at least one of the 3 guys you said were exceedingly unlikely. All we can do is speculate and i hate doing it, but it gets me pumped in the off season. I take in information from recruiting circuits and form opinions based on what i hear. We only have like 15 seniors on next year's team so estimating available scholarships is kinda hard if not impossible when you consider early enrollments.
Wait...so we shouldn't offer a QB this year because we might get a full class next year? There's nothing like gambling on the future, eh?
Every single one of us (I might be exaggerating) said last year, "Imagine what Rodriguez can do with a full year to recruit people. I bet we'll get at least 25 commits next year!"
Yep. Ummm...we're sitting at 20 with at least two possible decommits and about a half-dozen players who might commit before signing day. So unless something crazy happens, we might not get to 25 this year. So counting on 25 next year is just as ridiculous as it was last year.
Early desire does not equal late desire. There are plenty of people who express desire - or a commitment - who don't end up committing. Rodriguez can't look too far down the road, because if he doesn't get as many good players as he can in the near future, he's going to be on the chopping block. Until you get to the level of USC where everyone wants to come and you only have to send out about 30 offers to get 15 commits, then you need to fill your roster with scholarship athletes.
you mean 1/3 of a half dozen...
it says i don't know how many recruits/open schollies we will have next year. I never said we will fill out 25 scholarships next year. All i said is that it makes sense to save a scholarship (not offering Dantin) in case we do sign a big class next year. Dantin cannot that big of an upgrade over Feagin/Furha so why waste a scholarship on him. I agree with filling a roster with scholarship athletes but IMO, it is a waste to offer Dantin when we will have Threet, Tate, Sheridan, Feagin, and Furha (not to mention the qb prospects form next years class). It is a gamble to wait til next year but offering this Dantin kid is a gamble too. We dont know if he will pan out or not.
If they didn't feel Dantin was an upgrade over Furrha, they wouldn't be offering him a Scholarship. If they felt he was an exchangeable commodity with Westendorp or Furrha, they would have offered one of them.
They have not offered Dantin a scholarship yet.
You're missing the point. IF they offer him, they clearly think him to be better than someone like Furrha or Westendorp, no matter how badly some people want to conflate Dantin with those two.
as of right now who knows if Tate will work out, you just don't know with these kids, so with that said I have no problem with bringing in Dantin if we do offer, as for next year I only see us taking 1 top QB prospect either Gardner or Green.
Well if Robinson don't commit which I suspect he won't, I don't see a real big problem with offering this kid, has good upside and ya never know!
I'm wondering if we offer A.J. Westendorp if Austin doesn't pan out. I haven't seen the kid play, but he is a 4.0 student and seems to have pretty good size and numbers.
I know we want him as a walk on but it seems we have enough spots to offer him a scholarship if we need to. He seems like a good back up plan.
AJ seems to be the better passer as were Dantin is more athletic but ya still gotta think that we still have Nader Furrha the walk on, he's got some film, not very polished but has some upside, but lets hope Robinson commits SOON
Robinson's coach has publicly stated he's not committing anywhere until signing day.
Michigan and who eles?
He didn't publicly announce a top 2. His coach took a stab at it and said it's probably Michigan and Kansas St., as he thinks that Robinson wants to go to the same school as Witty. He did say that Georgia and Florida were also possibilities.
Them being a package deal seems to be gaining steam, which would then eliminate UGA, who have no plans to offer Witty.
Witty hasn't even been offered yet has he? from what I've seen around the web he hasn't been offered as of yet unless they haven't updated them yet. Anyone know anything different??
"The Michigan coaching staff offered Witty after his senior season was complete. He had suffered a major knee injury during his junior season and missed part of his senior season, but the coaching staff likes his versatility and athleticism.
"They want me as a defensive back and as an athlete also. I'd play both sides of the ball if I had to," Witty said. "They have some (defensive backs), but only a certain number of them played because of injuries and so on.""
Ah sweet thanks must have over looked something. Seems Witty is more following Robinson's lead, seems Witty has a ton of interest in being a Wolverine.
