I mean:

“The Victors” could soon have a modernistic younger sibling.

If a resolution presented to the Central Student Government on Tuesday night passes, the body will provide funding to a group of students looking to develop an additional thematic song to play at University athletics events.

Central Student Government.

I don't know who you are. If you're looking for jobs I can tell you I don't have any. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired from the internet. Skills that make me a nightmare for people who will be in job interviews with people who have googled you. If you vote this down unanimously, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for your facebook photos. I will not scour your instagram. But if you vote for this, I will find your linkedin. I will find your whole internet. And I will kill your search results.

The patient zeroes:

Business sophomore Adam Weiss, a representative on the CSG Assembly, spoke on behalf of the song campaign, which he called “Hail and Unite.” He said his friend, LSA senior Mike Weinberg, conceptualized the project.

“This project is meant to be, number one, extremely unique,” Weiss said. “The goal of this song is to get a lot of big names that are associated with the University.”

"Extremely unique." #expelAdamWeiss

Out of Control. First the president "likes" the OSU championship pic on FB, now this.  When I was there they didn't do anything worthy of recognition.  Maybe this was DB's trade-off for lower ticket prices.

Not all the time. You're exaggerating there. I mean they should start a campaign to actually learn the words. I went to hockey and actually showed up on time to football and I still don't know all the words. Obviously it's better to play the chorus when it's something sudden like a TD or whatnot, but maybe playing a single verse-chorus would be "a unique experience"

Oh Brian oh Brian. How I love when you post humor such as this. It is the scum of the earth like you that motivates so many of us to succeed in life. So, let me ask you a few questions you ignorant, disgusting loser.

1. Do you enoy sitting all day in your mom's basement jerking off to your sister?

2. Do you not show yourself in public because you're a fat piece of shit who eats all day and trolls the internet.

Why do i even dare go any further. This kid will clearly get a job because he is a genuine character who people do not care what they find about him on the internet. You on the otherhnad, well maybe you deserve to be ISIS' next target. Maybe one day we will see you on the internet, getting your testicles cut off and shoved in your fucking mouth. It is this day that I will laugh, laugh so fucking hard, because no one will know who you are.

So my reccomendation for you. Get off your fucking ass. Meet me in the Diag Friday the 13th at 3pm. Let's see what you really look like. And let's settle this like men.

"The Victors" and "The Yellow and Blue" have the advantage of tradition and legacy. If this new effort can create a new catchy song - let him try. Ultimately it should be the kids who will decide. They'll either sing along or it will die a natural death. No one needs to run it down on social media.

It will be like grammar. Someone can codify usage for given time (Sistrunk and White's book which is still wonderful) but over time things change - our written and spoken word is much different than it was 200 years ago, 100 years ago and just 50 years ago.

Fandom is a living thing and things done for fandom will also evolve and change. At some point someone had the idea of sending a section of the band into the stands to pep up the crowd and it is still done today. At some point it was recognized that cheerleaders could be both men AND women and that changed. The dipping of the drum major's hat was also an innovation at one point. The whole idea of a band was a "new idea" at some point.

Things rise and fall in popularity. Look at the cheers the alumni cheerleaders call out at homecoming - I mean really far back from the 1940-1950's - those aren't done anymore - they faded out of popularity. I don't imagine anything created will supplant the current big two but let's just see what happens. It could be like The Wave - something new that joins the big two.

I'm on the far side of 50 so I admit I don't understand a lot of the contemporary music or what is considered popular, but I do think we should give the opportunity for each generation of fans to find their own way. A lot of traditions and legacies live on because they work and are alive - others die out and deserve to fade away.

I disagree.  If the kid and his pals want to write, submit to the band or stadium entertainment folks, sing, popularize and/or produce a song about Michigan then more power to him.  If it becomes a long or short-term tradition then he'll have done good.  This isn't what he's trying to do.  He's putting his extremely unique idea ahead of any kind of product.  He's using student govenment as a shortcut from actually creating something that might be worthwhile.  It is the exact opposite of how organic traditions happen and defines why Dave Brandon is widely hated and deservedly lost his job.

I see your point - the ad campaign is being run before there is even a prototype. Let them come up with a few jingles and lyrics and THEN ask for the money. Good point.

Trying to create popularity, to create a fad rarely works - which is why no one could predict the success of the hula hoop, the pet rock or the Macarena.

Yes, cyber bullying is a real thing. But this post does not rise to that level. This is a response in the public sphere to a (horrible) idea with parody and mockery. As a parody, no reasonable person would expect Brian to actually follow through with his Liam Neeson "threats" nor is he exhorting any followers to do so. This is probably the first time the kid has heard from an audience outside his circle, and he's gotten some negative reviews. So what? We're supposed to be worried about bruising his fee fees?

Fair points and I agree it was meant more as a joke than any real malicious intent, but judging by the mob mentality of some of the commenters they’ve certainly crossed that line.  That’s the problem I have with this post: it was presented in a way that focused more on the person behind the idea rather than the idea itself.  I’m fine with saying the idea is fucking horrible.  But I would ask anyone planning to attack this guy’s appearance or other unrelated items think about the stupid shit they did (are doing) when they were 19-20 before doing so.

As someone who has been critical of the less than kind tone that many posters on this board have, I will say that I'm 100% behind Brian on this one.

Adam Weiss isn't a kid. He stepped into the public arena intentionally. Nothing wrong with treating him as you would any other public figure with whom you disagree.

04-08 there were hundreds of east coast/south FL jewish boys and girls that seemingly were made in a factory.  All with the same 2 dozen first and last names, black north face uniforms, huge shelthered egos, B/law school aspirations, and too much of daddy's money in their pocket.  This kid is no exception.

Let him make a dumb video/song and when it sucks, no one will listen to more than 15 seconds of it.  If 'Hail to the Victors' is as good as everyone here thinks it is, why would you be worried about this Wiess' new boner jamz remix replacing it?

Bunch of chicken littles around here, paranoid that the mountain you're standing on is going to crumble into the sea.

I hate the fact that this kid is Jewish because now anyone who has any sort of bias can use this event to support it.

I went to school in the mid 80's and at the time, they were called JAP's. The uniform was big hair, puffer vests, unlaced Timberland boots and lots of frozen yogurt. The boys drove BMW's with New York license plates. I'm a Jewish girl by way of Dallas, Phoenix, and Chicago and had never seen this group before. I wanted nothing to do with them. I found them appalling. Nevertheless, there were people who assumed that because I was Jewish and because my parents had done well enough to pay for my school, I must be one of them. During my years at U of M, I mostly kept to my small group of non-sorority friends, some Jewish, some not.

Years later, I still wince at exactly the group you're talking about. But I have a different perspective. I now know that when you're part of a group that is singled out for one identifying characteristic (this has happened to me many times in situations where my religion has been irrelevant), it's safer to stay together. It's safer to have identifying characteristics so you know who your people are. Yeah, part of the flashy materialism may be insecurity. But when you're with your own, you don't have to worry that someone will say "He jewed me down on the price," or "Well, you know they're jews, so of course they have cheap taste," or "It's an all-u-can eat buffet, which all jews love." These are things I've heard from bosses and friends over the years because I was the only jew in the room, and people felt ok saying that in front of just one jew.

Just giving a different perspective. Any idiot could have come up with this idea.

I totally agree with Brian/Ace/the entire mob ... this is a very bad idea. However, please don't mercilessly target this kid. For example ... #ExpelAdamWeiss ... C'mon. Everybody on this board, definitely including me, had at least as dumb of an idea that they acted upon when they were this kid's age. Furthermore, kudos to this kid for showing up and trying to do something positive for the university, however misguided his idea might be. By all means, tear down this dumb idea, but don't leave a scorched earth internet paper trail associated this kid's name that will follow him around forever.

What if the kid owned up to how bad of an idea it was and embraced the "expel..." hastag?  It would be funny.

Do you think an employer is going to see that hashtag and think some buzz from a bad idea proposing a song is going to kill his job chances?  In fact, if he is going for a position in which having bold ideas is a prereq, it might help him get a job.

Suggesting this noteriety is bad for the kid seems very presumptive at best.

So, let me get this straight, this d-bag was able to get into Michigan and we couldn't make room for Demar Dorsey?

This admissions failure eclipses the freep jihad....

Agree the fight songs are sacred ground, but shouldn't we entertain the idea of making our own piece that connects w students instead of constantly playing Levels, white stripes and Hells Bells etc?

I think I like the idea of making a new tradition to play when the band can't play/ is on breaks. Or, do you hate 'Jump Around' at Wisconsin and think that broke tradition-- or rather did they make a new fun tradition w commercial music? The devil is in the details/execution of this--

jonvalk

Explain to me the amazing traditions at Wisconsin prior to "Jump Around." Also, say even a few words other than "On Wisconsin" that tie into their fight song. The point is that nearly everyone knows "The Victors", our winged helmets, the banner. No one cares about Wisconsin outside of Wisconsin other than people who think Frank Kaminsky looks too weird to be a basketball star.

I despise exceptionalism, but never mind that...

"Frank Kaminsky looks too weird to be a basketball star" is the kind of crap we're now faced with because the blog's been overrun by people that like posts like the o.p. here. The datbull picture pages a couple of years ago were the tipping point for me; apparently little has changed in the meantime.

This is a stunningly bad idea. Please soundly (unanimously?) reject it, CSG. And then follow that rejection by passing a separate resolution that takes this one to task for its utter ignorance.

Isn't this blog's irreverent sense of humor one of the reasons most of us keep coming here? It's a joke.  Brian is not going to torpedo some kid's career prospects. Sheesh, people need to lighten up.  I can't believe that the term "cyber bullying" has even found its way into this conversation. What an antiseptic P.C. world we live in.

Okay, got it.  Most of those alumni know and sing The Victors.  It is generally regarded as the best fight song in the land.  No other song compares to it.

This kid has been on campus for two years and suddenly desires to create a second song.

WTF?  Is this yet another not-so-funny prank by a current student?

I really don't get it.
