Nebraska To Big Ten Official Comment Count

Brian

The Omaha News-Herald and Kansas City Star are reporting that Nebraska has officially applied to/accepted an invite from the Big Ten:

Late this morning, Nebraska officials contacted the Big Ten office, informing the league of the decision. Nebraska will become the 12th member of the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, University of Texas regents will meet next week to decide whether the Longhorns will remain in the Big 12 or switch to another conference.

Big 12 D-Day is Tuesday.

UPDATE: MSU AD Mark Hollis is tweeting it, so that's basically official. No more "anonymous sources."

UPDATE II: Showing the backbone we associate with true leadership, Hollis has deleted that tweet.

UPDATE III: From the Michigan AD:

Statement from Athletic Director Dave Brandon

I can confirm that Nebraska has applied to the Big Ten Conference for membership. I can also confirm that the Big Ten has done its due diligence as it relates to Nebraska. I expect that an announcement will be forthcoming from the Big Ten in regard to Nebraska’s membership very soon.

Here's a hint as to the outcome: The BTN is going to televise Nebraska's 6PM EST press conference.

I have had the pleasure once of attending a Nebraska game in Lincoln.  The atmosphere is terrific.  There is a place called the Sidetrack Cafe that really rocks.

I am not sure we will ever play there -- depends on divisions -- but I would definitely roadtrip there.

Michigan is the #1 winningest program in college football history, followed by OSU #5 and Penn St. #7.

Adding Nebraska (#4 all time),  this conference will hold even more tradition and glory.

Welcom Huskers! Can't wait for the first game!

I watched the Nebraska Board of Reagents vote to aprove the application to the Big Ten.  The Nebraska University Chancellor said they were looking for athletic integration in 2011.

Nebraskans are the best fans in sports. Being a Wolverine fan i would be very disappointed if any wolverine fans dont act the same to them. Compitition is good but being classy while doing it is beautiful.

In the name of good faith and sportsmanship, a few bullets:

  • No hard feelings about 1997. No one's opinions will change, it was 10 years ago, let it rest.
  • The Big 10 is among the finest academic consortiums in the world. There are high expectations set upon your students, staff and fanbase. No one wants another OSU.
  • We also expect outstanding performance in all non-revenue sports. High expectations again. No one wants another Purdue.
  • We all sincerely look forward to our first conference match-ups in all sports, most especially football, of course.

which, to be honest, has not been outstanding, although Purdue's last national championship is more recent than Michigan's. (If it weren't for women's sports, we Purdue fans might have no sports at all ...)

Purdue has actually been rather respectable the last few years, finishing 35th (three times) and 38th (once) in the last four Directors' Cup standings, which puts them in the third quartile in the Big Ten, ahead of only Indiana, Iowa, and Northwestern.

However, that's only respectable for a lower-tier school, and in that sense, it's reasonable to want teams that have stronger performance than Purdue. (Obviously there are only so many available schools, though, and most likely the ones that are accepted will be balaned between stronger and weaker programs.)

Mike Slive and the A&M AD will be pulling all-nighters over the weekend. I still think it is unlikely A&M de-links themselves from TX, but who knows. If they do, all hell is gonna break loose.

Just be gentle, Big Red.

Don't worry. Yes, we like corn too.

Corn on the cobb, roasted ears of corn, corn relish, corn fricasse, cornbread, creamed corn, maize, chef salad with corn, corn cakes, American Indian corn pudding, corn and avacado salso, corn and bean chowder, corn and blackshirt bean salad, corn fritters, Coca Cola with sweetened with corn syrup, southern corn custard, tuna corn bake, corn sauteed with hazelnuts, corn au gratin, crusty corn casserole, corny chicken soup.........

Not to knock Nebraska and its terrific fans, but I'm a little disappointed.  I don't want change or a conference championship game in the Big 10.  If there is to be change, I want it to be minimal.  Even though Nebraska makes more sense geographically, I want Texas more.  It has a better academic reputation and both its football and basketball programs have been pretty good lately.  Texas would probably also open up the Big 10 to a wider market due to its

  • ginormous surrounding population - Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington's population is 6.45 million, Houston's is 2.2 million, Austin's is 1.7 million, etc. Overall state population is ~24 million
  • more widespread fanbase and alumni?
  • larger and more geographically diverse student body: 38,000 vs. Nebraska's 23,000; a little less than 20% of each student population is from out-of-state

I still have to verify how large their market is.  I highly doubt the Big 10 officials haven't gone over it about a million billion times already or that they would invite Nebraska if it wasn't profitable.  Maybe we get Texas too, but I hate the superconference idea.  Regardless, welcome to the Big 10, Nebraska (although hopefully few Nebraska fans are reading this post since it's not very welcoming).

Well for starters....Here in Phoenix, the Huskers have taken over one of the 3 local sports radio stations and they broadcast every Nebraska game on the station.

They even have a local team store in Scottsdale that only sells Nebraska gear.

The Huskers reach is sick...

http://www.bigredofthedesert.com/

FYI there are no Michigan gear stores here and the main Michigan Bar to watch games is shared by Michigan State.

I don't want anything in particular.  It's more like, "since it's going to happen, then maybe it's possible that I would have liked for this to happen instead."  Look, I'm just wondering aloud (er, in print?) if in an alternate universe where Texas could possibly join without bringing along its "baggage," the Big 10 ends up making more money than it will with Nebraska.  The main thing in my mind was larger population = more subscribers = more money for BTN.  It was a strange thought process.  Oh well.  Admittedly, I had a strangely narrow-minded view regarding the reach of Nebraska's fanbase.  Things will be fine regardless.  In fact, I'm pretty psyched that Nebraska is joining.  It's a much more natural fit and it's Nebraska.  That's some pretty rich history.

If Texas was to join the Big Ten, their closest conference opponent would be Nebraska.  That requires a 3-4 hour plane trip (this includes the time you would have to sit in Dallas or Houston waiting for your connecting flight).  I just don't see Texas joining a conference in which their closest rival is not even in a connecting state.

I was stating a preference rather than proposing a solution.  I never said it had to be practical, and I wasn't that serious about anything I said, except for that I didn't want expansion.  Since then, I'm actually rather excited that Nebraska joined.  In any case, didn't really deserve such a harsh response.

OMG I am beside myself.

My family is all about the Huskers.  My uncle played for NU and was a big factor in the '59 game when Nebraska snapped Oklahoma's 74-game winning streak in the Big 8 conference. They were a bad team then but that game is legend.

But I've been a die-hard Michigan fan since I moved here.  I've hardly followed Big 8/12 football since then, because I was all about the Big 10.

Worlds colliding.  I'm kinda geeked.
