Multiple Reports: Braxton Miller Injured, Season In Jeopardy Comment Count

Multiple outlets are reporting that Braxton Miller reinjured his shoulder in practice this evening, and it could cause him to miss the 2014 season. Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch first reported the news:

Ohio State senior quarterback Braxton Miller, considered by several polls to be among the preseason leaders to make a run at the Heisman Trophy, reinjured his right shoulder in practice this afternoon, sources told The Dispatch. The injury puts in jeopardy his playing status for the coming season.

An OSU spokesman would not confirm the news, and coach Urban Meyer could not be reached for comment.

Eleven Warriors reports that Miller left practice in a sling. Bucknuts claims a third source that says Miller was injured in today's practice. All are reporting that the injury is to Miller's right (throwing) shoulder, which he injured against Clemson in the Orange Bowl before undergoing surgery in February. Ohio State hasn't confirmed any of these reports thus far.

If Miller misses time, redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett currently leads redshirt sophomore Cardale Jones to be the next in at quarterback for Ohio State. Barrett redshirted in 2013 while recovering from a knee injury he suffered in his senior season of high school. Jones appeared in three games last season, completing 1/2 passes for 3 yards and rushing 17 times for 128 yards and a touchdown.

This post will be updated when official word comes from Ohio State.

No one wants to see kids hurt but...we are talkin football here where negotiating player injuries is part of the landscape. There weren't any buck nut tears shed when Gardner was hurt in last years game. In fact there was lots of mocking and general happiness about it. Mich has had more than their share of tough breaks now let's see how the mighty bourbon Meyer deals with things not going his way.

that when teams A and B compete, it includes competing against their depth chart, not just a select few.  If Miller can't go, sorry about that, life is tough, now let's get it on.

Like when we lost Denard and Henne in their senior years. Which were also the last 2 senior QBs Michigan has had in a looooooooong time.

Nobody shed any years for Michigan either of those years. So I'm not about to shed any for OSU either. Injuries suck, deal. Sorry to Braxton though, hope he heals properly to continue his possible career in football.

OSU has gained more than its fair share of wins in the last 10 years because Michigan was not at full strength, and that never stopped their silly "Days Since Michigan Won The Game" from being tallied. I'm sorry that Miller got hurt, but screw their excuses. If the QB play proves to be difference in Columbus this November, Muppets will still be played.

I wonder if OSU has any "Gameday" games scheduled?  Would be nice to see some "I ain't come to play school" signs.

That said, I can't muster any hate for Braxton.  Seems kinda like a football version of Sullinger.  Want to beat him as a rival but respect the way he goes about the game.  Urban, on the other hand, I hope this causes much stress for him.

My first thought was that I don't like seeing anyone get injured, especially a Michigan opponent of his caliber.

Then my next thought was - this could be one hell of a game changer for OSU.

Then the better half of my brain kicked in and reminded me that the back-up QB at OSU could start for any team in the B1G, plus quite a few more.

Bad news for Buckeyeland, but I really doubt that it will put much of a dent in their season.

I consider it really unfair that Michigan:

Had to play against Craig Krenzel instead of Steve Bellisari in 2001

Had to play against an undefeated OSU team and Heisman winner QB in Columbus in 2006 when our 2006 team would have beaten every other team Tressel fielded

Were cheated out of our senior QB year by Henne's injury in 2007, that OSU team was not that good

Had to watch Denard marginalized in 2012 (except for one great play) when he was a senior

Was nearly the victim of Miller's only good game throwing the ball his freshman year, and we didn't get to play against Bauserman even once.

So if OSU has to start a kid instead of their senior QB one time against us, so sad for them.  Plus he'll get 11 games of seasoning before we see him.

I hope Miller is okay.

Does anyone know what the original injury was? Rotator cuff? Rotator cuff surgery is no joke, maybe one of the toughest to come back from 100%.

Either way, it really sucks for him, I hope he makes a full recovery.

Tore mine in high school, had typically shitty high school athletic training and wasn't advised to have surgery. "Ice it." Healed wrong and now I can throw maybe 8-9 passes before my arm feels like it's going to fall off. Horrible pain. Feel it every time my right arm goes about my shoulder.

MGoDoctors...is it too late to have any type of surgery? Clean out the scar tissue or anything? What's recommended?

No idea about your prospects now, but I'm in a similar boat. Elected not to have surgery (probably the right choice, since I'm not making a living off of my arm) but it hasn't felt right since despite doing all the rehab. Having trouble putting on deoderant seems to be the biggest thing day to day (think lifting up your shirt and shoulder at the same time). It sucks not being able to throw basically anything anymore though, I had a decent arm before that happened.

If you are at that point, and are willing to commit to the PT, get it done. I had mine done 3 years ago, had 3 tears and a bone spur and I was no where near what you are describing. You will likely have to have it done at some point, may as well do it when your body is better able to recover. My co-pays priced me out of rehab (they went from $5 per to $40 just after the surgery and I could drop $120 a week on rehab with my teacher salary). Even without rehab my range of motion is almost completely back to where it was, and in well within the average range (I can touch the opposite shoulder blade from above and below) and while my strength isn't where it used to be, I am funtional. I do have some pain in instances where I put my arm up on the back of a chair/bench/wife's should when I am sitting for an extended period of time, but the night time pain that woke me multiple times per night are gone. I would guess that with rehab, I would have been better than new now...but it does take about a year for full recovery. I was strapped down for 6 weeks, allowed to come out of the sling but not use the arm (not even to lift 5 pounds) for another 6 weeks. At that time the joint is healed and you work on range of motion and strength.

I'd wait for a doctor's report or official news from OSU before we speculate how long he will be out, or how it will effect their team. I'm more concerned about our team, namely our running game.

Firs, The Game is a long way off, so there's no gurantee he won't be back/healthy by then. Second, this hurts OSU, but it won't kill them...It never does, and I'd hazzard to guess that even without Miller, OSU is the favorite over UM.  It certainly makes their B1G title run less likely since MSU seems strong again, and probably means some games may be a little tighter, but I doubt this is a killer for them.
