Monday Presser Transcript 11-25-13: Brady Hoke Comment Count

Heiko

"And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Opening remarks:

"Thanks for coming. This is one of the weeks in football where if you are passionate about the University of Michigan or passionate about Ohio, which is exciting. We are excited. We had a chance to get together as a team. It's such a great rivalry that we’re very fortunate to be able to play in and to be able to coach in. This is a week that gets everybody involved: media, fans, all those people. Everybody has an opinion, which is good. It's good for the game because the game is talked about. It's going to be a lot of fun on Saturday to play the football game."

Injury updates on linebackers and Devin Gardner?

"They're all going to be fine. All three of them."

Expect them to play Saturday?

“Oh yeah.”

What do you think needs to turn around on the offense?

"Consistency. We get a nine-yard gain and then take a step back. Or we have good protection and don't finish the throw, or don’t execute the throw, or don’t catch the football, which is all part of it. That’s all part of execution. The rhythm you need to have from an offensive perspective has to be more consistent. The kids are working, believe me. They're working. They want to find that rhythm as an offense and run the football and be able to play-action pass and do the things that have been very good to us at times."

Is this the kind of game where you’re likely to take more chances?

"You talking about down and distances? I think you go into every game, and you try to look at the pluses and minuses. You try and do a good job with a good plan in all three phases of the game. There’s always different outside factors that may dictate things: injuries, wind, weather, all those kinds of things. You always go in, but you have to have a contingency plan, whatever that might be."

How is your team mentally at this point?

"Good. We practiced this morning, and they were very good."

Can you talk about the decision to play Kyle Kalis to right guard?

"Well, he had earned it. It's really no bigger decision than that. He had earned it. He had done a good job in the week. They evaluated him. Thought it would be good for the other Kyle, for Bosch, to take a step back and watch a little bit and keep learning. And I think that's what Kalis did."

Why him at right guard and Magnuson at left guard?

"Well, Mags came in here as a left tackle, and he's been on the left side more. More comfortable for Kalis on the right side? Yes. Magnuson is pretty adaptable and can do both, but he has been a left tackle, so it worked out well."

Impressions of Ohio State?

"Well, they have a very good football team. They have four out of five offensive linemen that are seniors. They have a lot of veterans who have played a lot of snaps. Their running back is leading the Big Ten. He's a good running back. He's a guy who can break tackles. You've got to make sure you get hats to the ball. Their quarterback has played well; he's throwing the ball a little better. They have good wide receivers and are explosive offensively. Back end defensively is a good back end. They are aggressive in what they do. I think that Shazier is one of the better linebackers in this league. Finds ways to get to the football. Good instincts. They are a good football team."

On film, do they look like the best team you’ve faced?

"Probably so."

How has Chris Wormley rehabbed this season?

"Chris has done a real good job. I think that missing last fall and being limited at times in the spring obviously hurt a guy in terms of the experiences of one play after another play. I think Chris has taken some real positive steps. He's played better in every football game, and he's playing faster. I think that when a guy starts to play faster like that you get the idea that he feels more confident in how he is playing."

Ohio State is the heavy favorite. What do you say to people who think Michigan has no shot in this game?

"Number one, I would say that we are going to play the game on Saturday, and that's why we're playing it. This game has always been different in some ways. Are they a good football team? Yeah. They’re a very good football team. Do we have to play better than we've played? I don't think there's any doubt about that, and we've got to be more consistent, and we’ve got to finish things better. It's what makes it so much fun."

Where do you see areas where your team has improved?

"I think that defensively we've improved as the year’s gone on. I think we have some of the young guys, the Chris Wormleys of the world. I think the three guys in the interior of the line are making an improvement. I would say those two areas."

Ohio State leads the Big Ten in points. Can you win a shootout against this team?

"I think the answer to that is however we have to try and get it done to win."

Will a win over Ohio State erase your struggles this season?

"No, that never happens. But this game is for our seniors. We’re going to honors those kids on Saturday. It is always important to win these types of game for those fourth- and fifth-year guys that have given a lot to this university and this program. For them, it’s always good if you win that game, because that's what guys talk about."

How quickly did Magnuson adapt to switching over, and how did you think the new interior line looked?

"It was probably a little better overall. For Magnuson, playing left tackle, that stance wasn't that big a deal. He has been early in the process and has played almost every position but center at some point. I think it was flawless to be honest with you."

How would you assess Devin Gardner’s performance through 11 games so far?

"He has had some really good moments and some moments that he'd rather redo if he could. I think we all have that. I do as a head coach. There’s always moments that you think about and think well maybe you should have done this. But the one thing about Devin is that he’s been pretty resilient. He’s a guy that comes to work every day and prepares to get ready to play and play his best."

You’ve talked about the lack of consistency. How do you coach consistency? That’s kind of difficult, isn’t it?

"I don't know if it's difficult; when you look at the little things that you have to do to have discipline to be consistent. And those are things that you are coaching every day, whether it be your footwork, whether it be a stance, ball security, or whatever it might be. Those are the things that you demand every day so that they become great habits and consistent."

You always say the goal is to win the Big Ten. Where are you right now with this program in three years? Does this game change when your goals have to shift?

"Well the number one goal has always been to play for our seniors and to do everything we can as coaches and as underclassmen, that we represent them. At the same time, the seniors have to do a great job representing that senior class. Is the goal always to win the Big Ten championship? No question about it. And we won't make excuses nor back down from it. Have we played and coached as well as we've needed to? Obviously not. And those are things that we've got to keep going and keep working every day because that's all you can do."

What are the keys on both sides of the ball to win on Saturday, and how confident are you that you can win?

"I am very confident that we can win, or we wouldn't play. I'd call down there to Columbus and say that we won't do it. Number one, we have to stay away from negative plays offensively. You've got to manage the manageables when you look at down and distance. Negative plays, taking care of the football, trying to steal a possession by a turnover. Defensively, the running game is going to be a big part of it. It always has. So we've got to do a great job in the rushing game and try to create longer distances for them."

What’s your earliest memory of this game?

"Oh gee. Every year I get older, so it gets a little harder. Watching the game on TV, you know. Black and white. I mean … Coach Hayes. I really respected Coach Hayes."

Yes I did support RR specifically because I looked into the roster and saw what a dismal state Carr left it in. And i support Hoke because RR did very little to solve the roster issues, and made the OL situation worse. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink dude. The line has mad progress and I've said I think Borges has the play calling yips. What more do you want?

Sten Carlson

I thought then and still believe that the PSU play calling especially late was understandable, and actually worked in putting the special teams in a position to win several times -- they failed to convert. I think Hoke & Co. Have determined that they need to keep repping the power run -- the staple of the scheme they want to run -- until the guys get it. That is frustrating to us fans, but understandable, IMO, from a long term rebuilding a young roster perspective. That being said, I think Borges displays some very weird play calling traits that make me think his years at Michigan have messed up his head. He gets something going, then goes back to the thing that they do poorly. He has a defense reeling, and he runs right at them and puts the offense behind the chains. I have no problem replicating Borges if someone must be sacrificed. But if they keep him, I think many of his most detested traits will disappear as the OL matures

we will forever disagree.  The PSU game was Lloydball at its worst.  They played not to lose.  40+ yard FG on the road in pressure situations are never easy...even with a proven kid like Gibbons.  The best play call the entire overtime session was the 10 yard out to Gallon.

So the Michigan Man idea is what ails this program?  Really?

First of all, it is what makes the program special.  It is a clean program that has excelled on a consistent basis for one hundred years.  That is amazing and deserves some serious respect.

Michigan is not about winning at any cost.  Other programs have gone that route, and I for one do not want Michigan to go that route.

Michigan doesn't just stand for wins.  We are not entitled to wins.  We need to earn the wins, not get them the gimmicky way.  It's about doing things the Michigan way.  The players who have played at Michigan all talk about the importance of the Michigan Man concept.  They are what the program is about.  It's about creating better men, and that will make a better team.

Second, it seems to me that we had much better records when we had coaches who understood the Michigan Man ideal.  So to say that it is what ails the program seems pretty debatable.

Does following this tradition of playing the right way put Michigan at a disadvantage?  Probably yes.  But I will argue that those teams will come and go, and Michigan will always be one of the great programs.  We may not win a lot of National Championships, but we will win the vast majority of our games.  That is how Michigan has always been during my 42 years of fandom, except for a few years here and there.

If I take the long view, I can't think of any other team I would prefer.

If I take the short view, I can understand people wanting other programs, but I'm okay with who we are.  We are Michigan.

Fergodsakes.

Cool. We can do that with just about any coach we hire, no? Anyone reasonable? "That" being "run a clean program." What we are all arguing about here is the other 75-90% of coaching. So we don't need to pontificate about it, do we?

I don't think BILG (or anyone) has ever suggested we should not continue to uphold the traditions and run a clean program; it's just that too many people think that those traditions also include neanderthal offensive football and blind loyalty. The latter two are unnecessary relics and are NOT intertwined with the former automatically.

So a "Michigan Man" can come from anywhere. And whether or not one is a "Michigan Man" is immaterial to whether or not one's offense is completely and utterly putrid and the man at the controls- the OC- is likely not the man for the job. He isn't. He has demonstrated that his celiing is below this level. Look at what happened at Auburn. And for many, if Hoke doesn't pull the trigger, than that's a massive indictment on Hoke. We shall see; I can say that if Borges is still OC next year, I'll have much less confidence in Hoke than I do now.

Those of us tired of "Michigan Man" being used as a way to hold the team back are upset with the idea that you have to be able to somehow trace your coaching career back to the program in order to be considered head coach. There's a finite (and small) number of coaches out there who are qualified and capable to coach a place like Michgian. When you obsess over hiring a guy with ties to the program, you slice the number of potential candidates into a number so small that you practically doom any chance of finding a good coach.

Brady Hoke would have never been considered for a program of Michigan's stature if the AD wasn't obsessed with finding a "Michigan Man" who worked for Michigan at some point in his past. It was his sole qualification for the job, and that qualification was so absurdly overvalued that it got him the gig. THIS IS INSANE AND HAS TO STOP.

For 20+ years after Bear Bryant died, you couldn't even get considered at Alabama if you didn't play or work for the Bear. And because of that, they had one decent coach in that entire time. Eventually they decided to just go find the best coach and now he's won all the titles all the time. Michigan has to stop looking for coaches on the polluted coaching trees of its past few head coaches.

Bilg2.0

November 26th, 2013 at 8:45 AM ^

and likeability probably were Hoke's biggest qualifications for the job....and were worthy qualities given all the in-fighting with the program.  Someone needed to come in to unify all the disgruntled fans, donors, media, former players.  It's just too bad our coaching tree is shit and Harbaugh and Miles were not available.

Other than that "konowing the fight song and Ann Arbor" as Brandon put it, Hoke was a gambe...not a great career record (albeit mostly at meh ,rebuilding football programs), and no HC exposure in a major conference.  He was our "Tressel" (without Div 2 championship success) type gamble , obviously not a slam dunk Urban Meyer type hire.

So I dont think the 03 Blue 07 is far off, as being a Michigan Man was pretty much what won Hoke the job.

+1000000 perfectly worded, this blind loyalty to the coaching staff and attachment to the Bo era has crippled this program so much that we are going into an OSU game not asking if we will win or lose, but asking and hoping we wont get a horrific butt whipping from uncle urbie

I just don't see how you can be so optimisitic when the coaches look so clueless.  If you like Hoke, that's fine...I think we all love him for what 2011 meant and his love for Michigan and bringing us Mattison.  There's a lot there....He's no Ron Zook, for sure

But if we rationally assess this year, it's pretty clear that he is not an X's and O's guru....surely not on the offensive side of the ball.  And when a team looks this sloppy, and the head coach has not the means to correct it, its very concerning, not just for this year but for the future.

I have no doubt Hoke will get us back to good, given the recruits we are bringing in.  But I have no faith that we can get to the elite level of Meyer's OSU.

Sten Carlson

November 25th, 2013 at 11:08 PM ^

I don't think they look clueless. I think they look like a staff dealing with roster issues that make efficient, consistent winning football difficult. I know you hate when I say it, but it's an issue that's plagued Michigan for a long time -- before RR even. Ails that have festered inside a program for that long take time to mend, especially when there are only so many recruits that a team can take, and when OLs take even longer to mature and become fully functional. I just think most anrgy fans totally underestimate the effect of the roster depletion and holes, especially on the OL. When the roster is back to full strength, Michigan will again be elite.

Now I'm not going to personally attack you, I just disagree with your stance and I'll tell you why. I believe that in sports a player is still in the developmental stage until a few years into a profressional career. Until a player reaches the pro's I put full responsibility on the coaching staff for wins and losses because if the players aren't performing on a consistent basis, ultimately that's their fault.

Either they haven't prepped them to a point where expecting them to carry out a play is reaosnable, or they haven't devleoped them to the point where they could execute the play, both things in my opinion fall squarely on the coaches.

Now sometimes you just don't have the talent to win and that is a reasonable explaination as to why you lost, but it still doesn't absolve the coaches. Their job is to recruit players and if they can't identify the talent that is another strike against the coach.

Where you and I disagree isn't with what is holding this team back. We all know it is a lack of execution (though I think playcalling is contributing as well). Where we differ is where we place the blame for that lack of execution. You choose to lay it at the feet of the 18-21 year old kids who are playing while I choose to put at the feet of those who are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop these kids into winning athletes.

The final thing I'll say is BH keeps saying the teams major problem is lack of consistency. I disagree completely with that assessment becuase this offense has been nothing if not consistent. They have been consistently awful for almost the entire season and when that is the case, there's a definite problem that goes straight to the coaching staff IMHE.

Finally, I want to be clear that I don't think BH should be let go in case anyone takes this post to mean that. I say he desreves two more years to prove what he's got. The entire offensive staff are the ones I believe should be gone...every last one of them.

Desmond Morgan and JRIII will play.  I think that was a big difference in how Iowa moved the ball in the second half.  Who knows. Yes we struggle mightily on offense, but if 98 turns it on, I think we have some matchup problems with their secondary.  23-30 Michigan is gonna win it fellas

BoWoody

November 26th, 2013 at 11:46 AM ^

if 98 can turn it on, this is funny stuff.  98 cant turn it on.  He is a broken player for some reason, which the staff only knows, he could be injured really bad or broken mentally from all the hits he took throughout the season.  But he cant turn anything on.  What you saw against iowa is what you will see against ohio, but with ohio blitzing on every down, and try to seriously injure him.  Which I hope isn't the case, but ohio is that dirty.  And now it is too late to play morris, if the staff just tried to play morris couple series throughout the season to try to find waht they have in him, I think I could be optimistic about the upcoming season.  Devin isn't a good qb, this is the simple truth and will not work with big AL

I am visualizing more red Jerseys. Hope I am wrong. I know The Game has created some memorable games for the underdogs. Here is hoping for one more... Sadly, not very confident that will happen. This season has made me mean and cynical. I would love a UM win and MSU loss in the championship game. Please do your part coach... Go Blue!

i honestly think i'd feel a little better if he said something, anything, that either admitted some fault or was just flat out ridiculous.  how about, "i wish we had made a different call on that jet sweep/second reverse."  not really throwing your OC under the bus, just a tiny bone to the fan base.  or "i love this week.  all i want to do is stomp on ohio's throat."  whoa, out of character, maybe get people fired up.

but nothing.  bland bland bland.  when you win, bland is fine.  i won't even read your presser.  but when you lose, gimme some mike gundy stuff.

and it makes me sad because he has a heart of gold and loves the university.  He's just in over his head and I think he's out in a year or two.  I hope I'm wrong because he's a nice guy that could be successful with a Mattison level coordinator on the offensive side, but he clearly lacks the football acumen to fix what currently ails that side of the ball.

Unfortunately, I just dont see many Mattison level coordinators on the offensive side of the ball available and willing to come to Michigan.  Maybe double Cam Cameron's salary...

Sten Carlson

"He's just in over his head and I think he's out in a year or two. I hope I'm wrong..." Don't be disingenuous dude. You want Hoke to fail so you can crow to the board that you were right all along. That's the thing about being positive. I want Hoke to succeed more than anything, and that desire spurs me to understand WHY the offense is struggling -- the ultimate cause of any teams success or failure is its roster. In doing so, the problems become obvious. Negative people, latch on to the easiest explanation -- that the coaches are morons and in over their heads. I see nothing that indicates Hoke is in over his, only that he inherited a depleted roster, just like RR did. The Michigan roster has been depleted for a long time, and problems that were a long time in the making take time to mend.

Bilg2.0

November 25th, 2013 at 10:10 PM ^

I want Hoke to fail so I can brag to the board?  Yeah, I care more about that than my team returning to national relevance.  Let me be clear, I absolutely hope I eat crow, and that Brady Hoke does become the next Bo...Guy is an awesome dude and loves the university....

But I refuse to ignore what I see...a very unprepared, amateurish looking team, week in and week out.  And I don't buy what you and the other apologists are selling...that it simply because our interior linemen are young.  Such is a simplistic and overly eager rationalization for a much more systemic issue...inability to adjust scheme to reality.  If anyone is looking for the easy, "head in the sand" explanation it is you.

If you don't see an issue with play action on 3rd and 12 when you have negative rushing yardage in a game, and think that is just about execution, then there really is nothing to debate.  Do you honestly not see a difference in demeanor, control, and football IQ between the likes of Saban and Meyer vs Hoke and Ferentz?

BoWoody

lol, stan will probably continue to say HOKE isn't over his head when hoke is in his 12th year coaching and no big10 championship game appearance, let alone win a big10 title. he talks about the roaster, and the talent.  This is a coach issue.  He should have seen this coming and should have implemented some manauvers in the previous years so this is not the case in his third year.  A lot of people are playing with young talent and winning why cant we.

"I want Hoke to succeed more than anything"

Well, THAT is a frightening thought. I guess fan is short for fanatic though.

"and that desire spurs me to understand WHY the offense is struggling -- the ultimate cause of any teams success or failure is its roster."

A roster that was recruited and developed by the coaches?

I hope Brady Hoke can turn it around - but i think anyone who has more than mere hope is engaging in (as Alan Greenspan put it) "irrational exuberance".

This is getting bad, Hoke is sounding more and more like RR...just as dumb, and our team is going in the same direction - and enough with this "Ohio" thing, he sounds like an idiot.  It's dumber than "the team up north" crap, both stupid, and embarrasing that we stoop to their level.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?  Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?  Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Twenty years ago this game, a mediocre 6-4 Michigan team hosted the undefeated and #1 team in the country.  the Ohio State Football team returned to Columbus a whipped dog to the tune of 28-0.

We can't run the football. That is the difference between this team, and all of the teams that pulled off miracle upsets in UM-OSU history. It is just like the MSU rivalry ... the team that runs more efficiently almost always wins. I believe I heard that Hyde hasn't had a negative run play this whole season. We have about 100. I'll be watching as passionately as anyone, but Michigan will lose this game most likely. Really the only question I have is if they can keep it respectable. I hope your optimism pays off, but I can't muster up any more false hope this season. It went out the window long ago.

Ah yes...that was the only edition of "The Game" that I have ever had the privilege to attend in person. It was awesome! Most Ohio State fans left at half time IIRC.  Later that year, as I visited my aunt in Columbus, I was walking down High St. acrossed the street from campus and there was a store that had Michigan gear on display in the front window. I have thrown that in Buckeye fans' faces many times over the past 10 years....and sadly many Michigan fans are doing things analogous to that very thing. Giving up season tickets, accepting defeat 5 days before game day. People are crying because Hoke "doesn't care" or "shows no heart" and yet many of you have placed an "L" next to Michigan already. You suck as fans and there is no way around it.... I don't care how great you think your fandom is because of what you've done in the good times. The team needs your support now, but because you have lost the ability to be arrogant, boastful pricks you are going to quit on them? Some of you are the reasons why no decision should ever be made for fans, especially what is said in a press conference. How about you drop the defeatist attitudes and cheer on your team! GO BLUE!!

The front runner to beat Ohio was Northwestern.  And they played even money with them for 3 quarters.  Classic Fitzgeraldplosion in the 4th.  Granted they had venric Mark then too.  But, um, guys, Northwestern is a Zero Win team in the B1G...

Ohio hasn't faced tough competition yet.  We have been fighing ourselves the whole season.  Time to let out some of that aggression across the line and fight someone else for once.  It will take flawless zero turnover football to make this work well, but we have the horses to run with them if the breaks go our way.

Lets stop Hyde.  We can do that if our ILBs can stay in the game.  Lets keep Braxton in the center of the field.  You can only pick on Ray Taylor so many times before he intercepts.  Lets not forgett Countess if he knows he has safety help behind....he's gonna play the ball.  Lets put the Onus on Meyer, put those guys down a couple of touchdowns, and see if they've got the grit to claw back.  Should we play them tough for 60 minutes, the red balloon is going to start losing air.

I've got a Fifth of pine tar that I'm gonna dump on Funchess' gloves when he runs out of the tunnel on a flawlessly executed pour. (just kidding, but you get the idea).

Everyone wants a HC who wears passion on his shirt sleeve.  Wayne Fontes did that.  I never bought in.  There seems to be this immediate equivalency that since Hoke has ice water in his veins, he doesn't care, he'd rather watch SpongeBob, he'd rather be grubbing Mr Spots...whatever.  The team will play their hardest for him no matter what the score, no matter what the weather, in any stadium.  I've seen that.  They keep grinding.  There have been mistakes galore at every position and we continue to line up on the next down and try again.  It will get better.  Eventually the arcing is going to get filed off the points and the misfiring is going to stop.  The Machine is going to run on all 22 again.  I can't wait.

So coaching consistency "isn't difficult" according to Brady?  That would seem to say that essentially, the kids we have are uncoachable.  If coaching consistency ISN'T difficult, why then is it so elusive, coach?

Either the kids you have brought in are not capable of learning (calling into question your judgment about them in the recruting process), OR your coaches just haven't figured out how to teach them (calling into question the quality of your staff).

The "youth" argument has some validity, but the dumpster fire of an offensive line that we have had for the WHOLE SEASON and the lack of improvement there speaks to coaching.

Space Coyote

It's not difficult, it just takes time (practice focused soley on individual improvement doesn't happen until the Spring for the most part). Quit looking into it so much and trying to twist it into a negative.

I still can't understand how there are so many people on this board willing to take typed words from a presser and try to twist them to mean so much more or take them so far from what is actually being said.

Blue in Yarmouth

That consistency is pretty easy to teach, it just takes time and reps. The issue I see is that this offense has been damn consistent all year. Consistenly bad. To me that points to the fact that the coaches aren't teaching effectively because they are consistently making the same mistakes on the field.
