[Upchurch]

Can you talk about what you get from Eddie McDoom on special teams and on offense?

“He’s been a contributor this year, last year. Fast, smart, fundamentally-sound football player.”

Purdue’s off to a good start. Can you talk about what you see out of them that has your attention?

“Yeah, the team’s done a tremendous job. Coaching staff would be an early favorite for coach of the year. They’re doing a nice job. The entire team is.”

With Mason Cole, to know that you’ve got a dependable left tackle with a starting streak and production, what kind of comfort does that give you as a coach?

“I would say he’s our most valuable offensive lineman.”

Does Quinn Nordin have sort of an unusual mentality for a kicker? Seems like a pretty confident and outspoken kid.

“Uh, no. I find nothing unusual about Quinn.”

WIth Rashan and Chase and those guys up front, did you see their presence and with Rashan especially, did you see him making impact plays in his first couple weeks here?

“Yes.”

What about him has stood out to you?

“Running to the football, playing physical, tackling very well. High effort, high talent.”

[Injury updates after THE JUMP]

It’s not everything that always jumps off the stat sheet, too, with those guys. Devin’s [inaudible] around a lot, but Rashan and Chase are up there?

“Oh, way up there.”

With Mason, how hard is it for a guy to go from the inside to the outside? Is it different steps or what has he done that’s impressed you?

“Uh, well, he started as a tackle as a freshman and transitioned to center. How hard is that? I don’t know, I’ve never made that transition. Talent and intelligence; he’s proven he can play any position on the offensive line.”

What did you like about the game on Saturday?

“Uh, we won. That’s our number one job. Took care of the football. Made some courageous throws from the pocket, accurate throws in tight windows. A lot of things.”

How do you guys prepare going from an offense that ran the ball 49 times, only threw nine times, to Purdue, which is probably going to be much more balanced. How do you guys go from that week to week, the contrast?

“You just do. Change the channel from one scheme to another. Change our scheme to adapt, improvise, adjust.”

Chris Evans lost a fumble early and didn’t play again until early in the fourth. This seems kind of similar with what you’ve done with both Wilton and even Donovan Peoples-Jones; they make a mistake, it’s a learning session, it’s not really a punishment. Is that how you handled it the other day with Chris and how do you think he responded?

“No, I don’t agree with that it’s like the others.”

Why not?

[shakes head, stares]

I’m just won—

“Why do you?”

Why don’t you think it’s the same as the others?

[stares]

With Chris.

“Chris is a…this is—”

Well—

“He played in the game.”

Yeah, at the game. He had fumbled—

“It’s not the same. It’s a position where we have three players. We do a rotation. We try to get the freshest back in there and go with the guy who’s got the hot hand. You’ve seen us, that’s what we do at that position. Ty’s the starter, Chris and Karan [Higdon] are gonna play in every single game. I just don’t see it as the same as the quarterback position or the punt returner position.”

From watching him on film, what is David Blough doing better this year and what do you have to do to defend him?

“Well, we’ve got our hands full. That’s mainly what we’re focusing on now [is] coming up with that plan and implementing it today in meetings and in practice. It’ll be a challenge for us. Whole team’s playing really good.”

Tarik [Black] went off the field on a cart. What is his status?

“He’s gonna be out. He needed surgery. He’s got a crack in his foot. Well, outside of his foot.”

Will he be back this season, do you think?

“I… I don’t know. I don’t know.”

And Ty Isaac? Looked like he had some kind of abdominal or maybe rib issue?

“Yeah, think he’s going to be okay.”

As you said, you won the game. You’ve talked about no error repeats with the offense , that they’re not the same mistakes and it’s a young football team. How’s the progress week to week. You’ve won the game and you move on, but what’s your feel as a coach right now with how things are progressing?

“Well, right now I’m getting prepared for conference play. Getting prepared for a good Purdue team and formulating a plan at the beginning of the week that’s going to put our players in a position to be successful on Saturday. So, working diligently at that and we’ll work at it, practice it, and hope to have a great week of practice in preparation leading up to the game.”

Was there something that stood out to you that you liked from last week in terms of maybe it wasn’t there the week before?

“Yeah, there were things. Like I said, you know, I’m sure you can understand we’re facing a very good opponent. All our focus is on what to do to be successful this week and to get another win.”

A lot of focus on the red zone, but what are some of the positives that you’ve seen from this offense through the first three games?

“As I’ve just said, there’s quite a few. Detailed them before. Right now we’re doing our job and that’s getting prepared for Purdue. They’re a very good football team. We’re doing the same thing defensively and on special teams. As I’ve said a couple times, they have a heck of a good football team. Respect that, respect the process of getting prepared for the game.”

With the defense, we talked earlier in the season about how they flew around to the football as well as you’d seen, thought they’d be good and they’re good, etc. Last week was such a change with mental discipline. Did you learn about their football IQ a little bit more in terms of their ability to go from one thing that’s totally different to this?

“Yeah, we talked about it. We’re plowing the same ground. I was really happy with the way our ball club played in this past game. Felt resilient. Felt tough coming out of that ball game. Felt we won it defensively, offensively, and on special teams. Numerous good things offensively, defensively, and special teams, and now it’s onward to Purdue. Getting our team ready for that ball game.”

This is kind of a broader question but I noticed [Saturday] you brought out an Air Force hat and put it on the table. You’ve always had an appreciation for the military. Could you describe not only your appreciation for the military but also the influence—are you trying to institute kind of a military style here?

“Uh, no, but I have great respect for the military. The hat was a hat from the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford.”

Legitimately cringe every time a reporter begins a "question" with "talk about (fill in the blank)." For the love of god do your job and ask a real question.

In sales training we're taught never ask a question that can be answered with a "yes" or "no" answer.  Always ask "open ended" questions to allow the customer to express themselves.

I wonder if the media has something similar ... ask these "talk about" or "how do you feel" questions in the hope that Harbaugh expands on something and they have a nice set of quotes?

I don't know.  Harbaugh is not impressing me with these last press conferences.  Those who live by the press also have some obligation to answer reasonable questiosn even if it's all coach speak and meaningless details.  But that's Harbaugh.

At least according to the transcript he answered the questions that were asked of him (such as they were).

Question: did you pull the RB after the fumble to provide a teachable moment like you did with the quarterback?

Answer: no, we have a running back platoon, substituting a running back is different from substituting a quarterback.

That's about how it went, right?

I dispute the idea that Harbaugh lives by the press.  Harbaugh does what Harbaugh does and the press finds that interesting.  I don't think Harbaugh seeks it out in any way.  He is just different and people doing things differently are perfect for the media.  They make their work easy.

He is under no obligation to answer anything.

But to say that ANY college coach doesnt live by the press is ridiculous. The guy didnt say live for the press. Harbaugh can do what he wants and be himself, not performing in any way for anyone. But that does not mean that he doesnt make a living from his press. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and there is no chance that he recruits the classes that he has had the last 2 years without a great staff and without the name recognition that he gets from the press to get in the door anywhere in the country. In addition the leeway that harbaugh has been afforded this year, with pretty much all offensive blame being placed on speight or drevno, is directly related to the press labeling him a savior for the last 2 years.

g_dubya

September 20th, 2017 at 12:57 PM ^

The idea that the press is what is allowing Harbaugh to recruit well and get leeway from the fans is silly.  Harbaugh recruits well and gets in any door in the country because of his resume not the press.  He gets recruits because he has shown he can develop talent for the NFL and win football games.  He gets leeway not because the press has labeled him a savior but because of the clear evidence that he is a good fooball coach.  One doesn't need the press to label you anything when you can point right at your successes.  He has mountains of evidence that he is a good coach.  He does not need mountains of press clippings.

1) Harbaugh is salty, but his answers are actually as informative as I think they could be. I do feel better informed about the team and how he thinks after reading this one.

2) Maybe it's mean, but I have trouble getting angry with coaches who get frustrated with stupid questions. I mean, I don't have a lot of love for Saban, but I definitely sympathized with his last press meltdown.

Harbaugh is far more jovial in a presser following a good win than a presser following a bad win or a loss.

Contrast the post-Florida presser with the post-Cincinnati and post-Air Force pressers.

We all sit back, stand, pace, whatever during the game and critique everything. However, I can absolutely guarantee with 100% certainty, Jim Harbaugh wants Michigan to win more than anyone, bar none. Period. The man probably hasn't slept in 3 1/2 weeks. The offense will get better.

I mean, it'd be nicer if he answered the questions without such obvious brusqueness.

But after the ten zillionth time of hearing "Coach, it seems like you've won all the games where you outscored your opponents.  Is consistent rushing yards an important element of that?  Can you talk us through the importance of teaching a young team about the value of outscoring your opponents?", can you really blame him?

September 18th, 2017 at 6:02 PM ^

These things are about as informative as last weeks paper. I love this guy, but rather watch paint dry then to get him to really answer any questions, some of which were good. I'll take him still over what we had or any other coach. Go Blue.

Read through the first 10 questions, which of those were good?

1. Can you talk about Eddie McDoom

2. Can you talk about Purdue

3.  Is it comforting when you have a good left tackle

4. Is Quinn Nordin strange

5. Did Rashan make plays

6. What did Rashan Gary do well

7. Do Rashan and Chase do things that aren't on the stat sheet

8. How hard was it for Mason to change positions (decent question maybe)

9. WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT THE GAME SATURDAY

10. How do you prepare for a team that's super different than the one you just played

The vast majority of these are useless quote hunting.

the press conferences, in general. Not much is really learned. Only exception seems to be Professor Brown's discourses. The #1 Dude is very animated and entertaining, if nothing else.

September 18th, 2017 at 6:24 PM ^

Harbaugh seems like he's just done with the media. He doesn't even give them a chance, he's ornery this year like he rarely was in the past.

It's fine, I mean it's just a presser...my only concern is, be careful. Maybe I'm sensitive about the practice coverage from the FREEP. Maybe I just remember how he "wore" on everyone in San Fran and the media was the first to turn on him.

I don't think it'll matter to fans - all fans care about is winning. But the media? Have to be careful with that group.

This is more than just 1-2 weeks, he's  been this way since the end of fall camp. Just kind of nasty, dry, abbrassive. Not too much, but enough where it's noticable. Nick Saban usually has his 1 week where he goes off and storms out, but it's just that week. Harbaugh was being nasty to every question.

I also wonder if just having this young team a year after having such a veteran team is wearing him a little bit.

Hopefully after the bye week he's recharged and a big time rivalry win lifts everyone's spirits and he's back to joking about milk, or Rome, and having fun with the media. He's actually a really good read and provides some solid insight.

TIMMMAAY

September 18th, 2017 at 6:39 PM ^

You're such an armchair... everything. "Recharged"? Really? I think he's just damn fine, but has zero tolerance for ignorant "reporters" that are too fucking lazy to come up with a single question of any substance. He's protecting his damn team, man, and that's it. You read way too much into everything, then write diatribes about it. For all of those words, you show very little actual understanding, and a lot of narcissism.

Mr. Yost

September 18th, 2017 at 8:42 PM ^

I've honestly never heard armchair used. You? You're a douchebag, I'm sure you've heard that before.

And yes...recharged. There is a clear difference in his tone in these RECENT pressers. Gone are the days where he jokes about 2% milk or provides those "classic Harbaugh" sound bites.

He used to enter the room smiling and joking. Lately that's just not the case - which like I said...is fine.

He's made it clear he doesn't want to talk injuries, and yes, some of the questions are ridiculous (or they aren't even questions at all). However, he walks into the room RECENTLY and clearly he's in a mood. Before a question is even asked. I feel like you can relate.

Mr. Yost

September 18th, 2017 at 8:47 PM ^

I went back and looked up the first Monday presser from last year that popped up. I wasn't about to search them all. Check the timestamp, clearly I didn't look long.

http://mgoblog.com/content/monday-presser-10-31-16-jim-harbaugh#comments

Completely different.

So yes, people can mention when they notice how different he's been this year compared to last season.

TIMMMAAY

September 18th, 2017 at 9:20 PM ^

It's not that you mentioned it. Don't take the cheap way out and twist things. My issue was with your over "analysis" of the situation, and trying to read things into Harbaugh's mindset that I'd just about bet the farm are not there. You do this kind of thing a LOT. It's annoying.

Then to come back with a disingenuous defense, well that's just weak sauce, man.

Cool bad names though, bro. Shows maturity.

dipshit moron

September 18th, 2017 at 8:31 PM ^

you are giving him way to much credit. i have seen countless videos of him in press conferences and he treats  every question with complete disdain if he doesnt like it. and he treats reporters like children. and you know what , im glad. with all his success he still has to answer questions from reporters on "why did you do this and why did you do that".

Indiana Blue

September 19th, 2017 at 9:39 AM ^

psycoanalysing Harbaugh.  Talk all you want about x's and o's .. but no one on the Blog should be justified in this absolute speculation.  Anyone even consider that we just lost our best receiver for possibly the year.  Or that WS is a freaking average QB right now.  We have the defense and special teams to beat anyone in the B1G, but we have no offensive leadership right now.

Go Blue!

Suffers no fools. Haha

I think Angelique is one of the few reporters who have established a rapport with him but even she knows to ask a direct question when he's in this zone. He seems really focused and on task with Purdue game planning and not interested in giving sound bites or elaborating on past events.

September 18th, 2017 at 6:34 PM ^

I'm not sure why people think they can ask the same question with slightly different wording and get a better answer.  He did everything but say "don't ****ing ask me that again" yet they still keep asking the same things.  Pick up the hint.

Honestly, it doesn't seem like there aren't any questions he'd like to answer about hte team right now and it seems that it's a waste of everyone's time to have this news conference.

Honk if Ufer M…

September 20th, 2017 at 2:47 AM ^

They're doing their fucking jobs, this is their assignment, they get fired if they don't go and don't ask their fucking questions. You all know this unless you're completely idiotic. Harbaugh knows it very well, obviously.

You can pretend to be stupid, or maybe all of you really are, but you know damn well the majority of fans want to hear from the coach and want questions asked or players, plays and subjects brought up that the coach will respond to, or yes, god forbid "talk about."

Reading about, talking about and thinking about the games and the team before and after the games is as big a part of the sport and how fans participate or engage with and enjoy the sport.

The press conferences are ENTIRELY about the fans and giving them information and coverage they are hungry for, and yes, catering to those fans and their interests in seeing and hearing from coaches and players and reading and watching discussions of their teams is in fact what makes the sport possible on the scale that it is, and it does pay every single penny to support the sport and make coaches, advertisers, broadcasters, schools and athletic departments billions upon billions of dollars where the labor costs for the product they sell don't exist. If they really wanted to "protect" the players they would fucking pay them what they have always deserved.

I personally know players on this very team that have had to send scholarship money home to keep their family from being evicted or to take care of other family money emergencies.

Grant Newsome almost died. Almost all of them will have surgery or multiple surgeries or break bones or have other serious injuries and will all take way to many smashes to the head and brain. They'll need knew knees and hips before their time, they'll suffer brain and memory problems, etc. etc. etc. So many people get so rich off of the players risks and broken bodies and heads and efforts and time and talent and brilliance and the players don't make a penny.

Having to spend a few minutes answering questions or telling stories to the press is an infinitesimally small price to pay for everything a coach gets out of the deal, out of the system and the money gets from the pockets of the fans that want to hear from the guy THEY are paying! If the fans aren't the ones paying then why don't Eastern or Olivet pay ten million bucks for a coach?

Harbaugh seems a little different this year, both in pressers and in games. Something is just off. I can't help but wonder if he knows the team may struggle a bit this year and is very frustrated as a result.

jamesjosephharbaugh

September 18th, 2017 at 7:16 PM ^

Have an upvote.  everybody's talking about the stupid questions and how they deserved the frustrated answers.  But you're right, there's something off.

over the summer, Harbaugh made a comment about "cutting out all the fun stuff" that made me tilt my head to the side.  And since then, I've noticed a general displeasure about his public presence that I can't just chalk up to Harbaugh's usual annoyance w/ the press.

That said, these were poor questions. I'd be annoyed too.  But Harbaugh knows he can make the presser a little easier for folks, or harder if he chooses.

I'm not going to venture a guess as to why he's salty this year, but I'll say I hope it doesn't continue.  I like fun-loving, tree-climbing, slumber-partying, go-kart-driving, milk-drinking Harbaugh as our coach.  Not "I hate everyone and everything except the team" Harbaugh.
