News bullets and other items

  • Hoke didn’t know whether Shane Morris was concussed or not
  • He also didn’t see Morris struggling to get off the field after the hit
  • No injury updates were provided
  • Next week’s starting quarterback will be determined after reviewing the film and, presumably, after the next week of practice
  • Hoke is surprised some of the same issues keep cropping up considering how hard the team practices and how good they look during the week

Opening remarks:

“Number one, Minnesota – give them credit and give Jerry [Kill] credit but at the same time we didn't… we’re disappointed in how we played football today. I think when you look at different aspects of our game I don't think we played as well as we can. I don't think we executed as well and that always comes back to me first as a coach and what we can do better to help ourselves and help our team. Didn't tackle well and that was disappointing and that part of it. And part of that [is] we needed to leverage the runs a little better. There were too many times where the ball got outside the defense and that's never good for you when you're playing defense.

"I think from an offensive perspective we struggled in a lot of different areas. DeVeon had some nice runs early in the football game but we struggled just in various different areas at times. Either a negative play that puts you behind the sticks– you've heard that; probably heard it too many times and I've said it too many times – or just not consistent in what we are trying to get done and that’s something that we have to make sure we are getting to that point where it's going to be consistency and so that's a big part of it. I think field position was a part of the game. We've got to do a better job. A couple of punt returns went for way too much yardage. I thought Will made a couple good punts and a pooch punt and kind of drove the ball a little bit but we've got to get better coverage and do a better job there.

“From the standpoint of our team and their attitude, number one, they’re disappointed and they should be. We all are. Secondly, I think the guys in that locker room, and I've said this before and you may think I'm not telling you the truth but they work their tails off and that's the sad thing is they've got to keep working and we are going to keep working for each other. We are going to keep pushing ourselves to be the best Michigan team we can be and our goals are still out there. There’s a lot of football to play and we talked in the locker room [how] there's two things you can do: you can quit, you can shy away from it or you can be honest with it and go back to work and that's what we'll do is a football team.”

Brady, can you share with us what you saw in Shane this week that gave him the start that we didn't see you today?
“Yeah. I think, number one, I've said this before and I'm going to say it again is we've got two guys who we have a lot of faith in at quarterback. Shane had a good week of practice. He's had a good practices throughout fall camp. I think that I talked about earlier in the year and he had a good practice last week.”
What do you think was wrong today?
“Well, again, I think sometimes we want to point the finger at one guy because he's the quarterback and I don't think that's fair. I don't think that's fair. Obviously we've got to do a better job with some protection things he had to step up in. Pocket closed a couple times on him. I think, you know, the interception was a tipped ball at the line of scrimmage that gets knocked up into the air. We've got to have better ball security. He’d be the first one to tell you that. A couple times the ball was on the ground but as far as how he practiced and what he did to deserve to start, he's been doing that throughout camp and fall.”
Is it still his job?
“We’ll evaluate it, like we do – like we did last week. We evaluate. For me to sit up here when you don't look at all the film yet, and believe me, you can't see everything from down there and we'll evaluate it.”

Brady, curious as to the decision to leave Shane in after he got hit. Might've had a concussion…

“Well, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know if he might’ve had a concussion or not. I don’t know that and that wasn’t something- Shane’s a pretty competitive, tough kid and Shane wanted to be the quarterback and so believe me, if he didn’t want to be he would’ve come to the sideline or stayed down.”

Was it your decision then to leave him in after the late hit foul?

“The late hit foul…yes.”

[After THE JUMP: more on Morris’ potential concussion, finding a spark, and Hoke’s feelings on the “Fire Brady” chant]

All week long you’ve been saying that it’s the Big Ten season and it’s time to get going.

“Right.”

What do you think happened out there? What’s your assessment of why you think this team-

“I think I just went over it, kind of. Right?”

I guess so, more or less.

“I mean, we’ve got to play better. We’ve got to execute better. We’ve got to coach better. This is a hard working group, I’m going to tell you, and you’ve got to do a better job tackling, leveraging the football. I think you look at field position and I think that will be an interesting study to look at. We didn’t have great field position, and we put ourselves in poor field position on some punt returns and then offensively, I think…I guess it’s right here (/looks down at stat sheet). We were 4-of-13 on third downs. That’s not sustaining drives.”

Brady, we’ve talked about the same things here the last few weeks and you said it again. Why do these things continue to appear? The same issues, I guess.

“Yeah, you know what? The way these guys practice you would not think these issues would appear, and how they work during the week. So I think as a staff you always evaluate did we give them enough of these looks, did we not give them this? It may have been a play that the defense didn’t see or something like that, so we’ll start there tomorrow- tonight- on making sure that we’re doing everything we can do to help these guys win.”

So you’re evaluating inward? You’re evaluating yourself?

“You always do. Win or lose, you do. So it’s nothing different.”

You’ve talked about the team’s keeping their faith and working hard. Have you seen that falter? Did you see that falter at all today yet?

“No. Nope.”

And then you talked about after the game telling the team you’ve got to be honest with yourself and assess where you’re at right now. What’s your honest assessment of what this team is capable of at this point?

“I think this team can still win the championship. I really do. But we’ve got to play much better and we’ve got to support each other as we do it.”

Brady, just to be clear on when Shane Morris got the hit to the head, did you see him kind of wobbling and fall?

“I did not.”

Okay, because it looked like he was out on his feet. Nobody saw that on the sideline?

“I didn’t see it. I can only answer for me.”

Secondly, do you feel you waited too long to put Gardner in anyhow, just based on how Morris was struggling?

“No. You know…you play him, you don’t play him…no. Shane was the guy who was our quarterback.”

So in retrospect you don’t think it was a mistake benching Gardner for the start of the game?

“No, I don’t. No.”

One more question-

“I would have started him if I thought differently, right?”

Yeah, but now you have 20/20. You can look back and realize it didn’t work.

“Yeah, but that doesn’t do any of us any good. You’ve got to be present in the moment, and we made a decision because of how both of them compete and challenge and we also believe that giving Devin a chance to watch a little bit and learn and that’s what we did.”

At the end of the game Morris was taken off the field on a cart. Do you know what his status is?

“I do not. I do not.”

One last question: with the struggles at quarterback and everything else are you concerned about losing control of this season and in some aspects of the team?

“No, I’m not. Not at all. Not with the kids that we have.”

There was a stretch there in the third quarter where Shane had a fumble that he recovered, then an interception, then a fumble that he lost. Any idea what was going on during that stretch?

“He had a fumble that he recovered, and what was the other thing?”

Interception.

“That was tipped at the line of scrimmage, right? Okay. I think obviously we have to have better ball security.”

Brady, you say that all of your goals are potentially still winning a championship for this team-

“Sure they are.”

Providing a spark for this team; you tried changing your quarterback, you tried some other things. Where else do you think you can look from within to find a spark-

“I think it’s within all of us. I think it’s in how we continue to go about our business and how positive the guys are with each other about what’s going on. Believe me, there are guys in there that are taking responsibility for what we’ve done. I’m talking about players, coaches, everybody. So when you look at what’s ahead of us we’ve got to go back to work and get better.”

Brady, when you look at the offensive line’s play, can you assess that and talk about-

“You know, I don’t know if I can give an honest, clear assessment. I think obviously there were some struggles today. I think the thing to look at is the communication a little bit. Making sure that we’re targeting things right. I think that’s part of it. Did we get our hat across a man like we needed to or did we get the movement we wanted? At times we did and so all that we’ll look at and evaluate.”

Brady, I’d like to switch to the other side of the ball, when Michigan’s on defense. Minnesota’s had a really difficult time throwing the football. They only had 10 yards, I think, last week-

“Yeah, they threw seven times last week.”

What did they do as far as those underneath routes that maybe caught you off guard as far as-

“I don’t think it caught us off-guard. Number one, they played a different quarterback last week and Leidner got healthy. He’s a guy who started against us a year ago. I think we lost a little bit with our discipline with our eyes on a couple of those routes and especially the ones that you’re talking about. They did a nice job executing on the slide screen to the tailback. One time we’ve got the guy in our hands and he breaks a tackle, so a lot of that has to do with your discipline with your eyes.”

Brady, a couple of guys said this week that you told them that they couldn’t be comfortable with losing.

“Correct.”

Is this program comfortable with losing right now?

“I would hope not. I would hope not.”

How do you assess that?

“Well, the good thing is we got to meet as a team after we got done and tomorrow we’ll meet with them. That’s how you assess it. And then how they to go to work.”

And then do you have any update on Peppers?

“No. No updates.”

Brady, in the third quarter the student section, or what’s left of it, are chanting “Fire Brady.” I know you say-

“They were?” /smirks, raises eyebrows

Does that stuff phase you at all? Does that get into your head at all, or how do you block that out?

“I didn’t hear it, and when you’re in the moment you really don’t.”

Does it mean anything now that you hear that?

“No, it doesn’t. I mean, hey, this is big boy business.”

Brady, if you could give a message to the Michigan fanbase right now what would you tell them?

“Well, I would tell them that number one, we know their frustration because we share their frustration, and I would also tell them that as a team we all take accountability for it and we also are going to work together to rectify it.”

But because 2010 was my first year caring about Michigan football (because I started school there), and because everyone was so adamant that RR was incompetent and that M could do so much better, and because there was this seemingly inevitable choice at San Diego State--why, he was even a Michigan Man!--I just kept my mouth shut and presumed those who knew more than me were right.

Then, 11-2. So clearly they knew more than me.

But I still wouldn't (and won't) be surprised if Arizona ends up in really good shape.

At the end of the day, RichRod had a good DC at first in Shafer and undercut him, forcing him to run the 3-3-5.   If he would have supported his coordinator and told his crappy, incompetent position coaches to shut up (or better, not have brought them here in the first place), his tenure could have been much better.  But for some reason he's married to the 3-3-5 and needs a rare guy who favors that scheme.

Compare that with Beilein, who ran a ton of 1-3-1 at WVU but recognized that it could cause trouble on the glass in our conference and went to predominantly man to man/2-3.  The great coaches are secure enough to give up some of their cherished philosophies if they aren't working.

Brandon's not getting fired, nor does he deserve to get fired.  He has made great improvements to virtually all of the facilities, acquired far more capital through donations, and has done an excellent job scheduling future nonconference opponents.

The only criticism I've heard is the ticket prices and the first-come-first-serve student section policy of last year (which is gone now).  He's not responsible for the lack of attendance.  If the team was performing half-decently, you better believe that every seat in that stadium would be filled.

While Hoke is definitely the one ultimately resposible, I would actually like to know exactly who makes the decisions to pull/insert players during a game.

It would also be good to know: exactly who is assigned to watch what on each play?
I'd be willing to bet that BH is most likely looking at the line or more likely some part of the defense.  We forget that they aren't getting the same view that we get on television, and aren't necessariy watching the same things we are.

It is very possible that Hoke and maybe even DN weren't watching the QB and see the hit.  While the trainer wasn't giving an exam, he was talking to Shane and looking into his eyes. Until we know futher, there is no evidence that signs of a concussion were ignored.

When they put Shane back in there, the ref saw that he was wobbly, so he looked at Hoke and asked if he wanted a time out to regroup and put another QB in there.  Hoke clearly refused and told the ref to roll the clock.

Its on the tape.

You're right that Hoke doesn't get the same view that we do on TV. That's why they've got guys up in the box who get the feeds. And can let the coach know. But for that to happen Hoke would need to wear a headset. Hoke may well have been ignorant, but if so it's on his own volition and therefore isn't off the hook in my book. He's the head coach, he calls the shots, and player safety is ultimately his responsibly.

Honestly, if things were going to get any better, they would have already done so, only Hoke keeps treating it as a crisis of work and execution, and it simply is not. He has no answers and nothing that is going to turn this season around. It is a crisis of strategy and philosophy....of player development and and putting them in a position to win. In this day and age, you just cannot compete by trying to out execute a team, you have to read, adjust and exploit what a defense presents...Michigan just doesn't. It is astonishing to me that Hoke still says 'they look great in practice', because all that really means is that he has no idea what a good team should look like.

while the Shane playing hurt should be priority they didn't ask about the following:

1.  someone called a timeout 1 second before Minnesota spiked the ball at the end of the first half to give them an extra play and free timeout.

2.  Why did they not try an onside kick?

3.  Why didn't they go for the 4th down conversion down two scores with 4 minutes left?

2 and 3 basically verify that Hoke quit on the game and pretty early.  They still were huddling down 3 scores in the 4th.  They could also ask about how successful the shotgun for Gardner was and why do they run so much play action from him when it's obviously not working well.

September 28th, 2014 at 10:15 AM ^

Minnesota was sprinting to the ball, with the quarterback making the "spike the ball" signal to his teammates.

Michigan...decides that it is time to make a substitution.

Timeout Michigan, because you just have to get the right personnel package on the field for that spike.

Devin can watch video.

Holy crap. This line about Devin sitting so he could watch or something and get better is pure nonsense. What's more important to you, Coach: Devin getting your strange idea of some "perspective", or winning the damned football game?

Ridiculous. You play your best quarterback. And especially when the other guy is limping! Forget about who started, but how about in the third quarter, when he's got 49 passing yards and multiple turnovers?!

Badkitty

September 28th, 2014 at 3:37 AM ^

Just unbelievable.  How does he not know whether or not one of his quarterbacks has a concussion or not???  That's not important?  This is typical of the lack of attention to details that is killing this team.  I saw that Spurrier presser.  He was dramatic as per Spurrier, but at least he took blame for issues and he actually answered some questions and had statistics and DETAILS available or could refer to.  He seemed like a coach in command of the team.  I don't know what Hoke is in command of.

Brady Hoke's lack of leadership has disgraced this team and this university. Leaving Shane out there looking like he did is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen on a football field. He should be ashamed of himself.

September 28th, 2014 at 4:20 AM ^

I used to get pissed off that Hoke didn't answer questions, but now I think it's just that he doesn't know the answers.

He doesn't know why the team is bad, and he doesn't know how to fix it. He doesn't know how to fix the offensive line or limit turnovers.

He's obviously in over his head.

-If he wasn't aware of what was going on with Shane in the heat of the moment, he is either lying or is completely incompetent.

-How can he not play Peppers at all, cause Jabril spoke up in practice? Incompetent and stubborn all at the same time, Hoke takes the cake and eats it all too.

-Mattison is the most over rated DC, we 're not playing our best players obviously with the Jabril thing and that aggressive defense philosophy sure was given up on quickly. Our tackling sucks too.

-The incompetence of how the whole Morris fiasco was handled is pure negligence and a fire-able offense.

-The disorganization of Bellomy not being able to find his helmet was pure idiocy, you see Morris got hurt so now DG goes in there, you would think someone would indicate to Bellomy that he might have to go in in case of an injury or emergency, but that whole shit show looked like a bunch of clueless guys from the equipment mgr. to the coaches and to the players. If that sequence isn't an indicator to us of the pure incompetence of the whole program, then I don't know what is.

There are so many more things that I can't think of right now, it's not fun to watch my beloved team anymore!

19-year-old kids often want to do things that are self-destructive and risky.  It is the responsibility of the mature adult who is in authority to make the tough (arguably in this case, simple) decisions on their behalf.

Was it your decision then to leave him in after the late hit foul?

“The late hit foul…yes.”

So, can we go back to the previous question then, because now you're contradicting yourself.  You admit that he might have had a concussion - you don't know - but decided to play him anyway, because it was your decision.  That is the answer to the first question if you would stop LYING and DEFLECTING and actually tell THE TRUTH!

I really wanted Hoke to succeed.  Like many of us, I like the guy.

And I don't really want to spend a lot of time spouting off about how stupid he is because I don't think that's true or really helps.

He is a great position coach...great at teaching DL technique and great at motivating and recruiting to the brand.  He does have a strategy and I think it was farily obvious early on in his tenure that his strategy was "if we make the OL and DL dominant, we can win football games."  We can agree or disagree whether, correctly implemented, this strategy actually works or not.

But what I think is painfully obvious now is that he cannot see the whole game in real time.  And to me that is number 1 on the job description of a  head coach.

This is never going to happen, but I think the best case scenario is Hoke - out of his love for Michigan - becomes the DL coach and Michigan hires a new HC.  Those players loyal to Hoke would stay and we would retain one of our best recruiters to all that is Michigan football.

And for my final attempt at therapy without starting a new thread...

(again I like Hoke, but think he's denying the reality of the situation)

I would like to ask Hoke the following questions:

1.  Explain the difference, in your mind, between responsibility and accountability.  We all know you are responsible for coaching the team.  A quick look at your job title and salary demonstrates that.  But what we don't understand is what you mean by being accountable for your responsibilties.

2.  We know you like to look at the tape before voicing gut reactions to the public.  So after watching tape over the last 12-18 months, point to one area of the team where you can use some sort of measurable criteria to verify improvement.

What is he going to say to these questions? Of course he's going to say we have to keep practicing and evaluating. He's trying to keep a team together. Of course he's going to say they can still win the league. Of course he's going to say Morris was their QB and they didn't want to pull him. But the possible concussion issue is a disaster. No excuse. He has to see it and do something about it. Nuss is the position coach, and the position coach makes the substitutions, so I can see why Hoke might have missed it; he's looking elsewhere. But that's not an excuse. There is no excuse to leave a potentially concussed person out on the field. Disaster.

Reader71

September 28th, 2014 at 12:31 PM ^

That's fine. Wouldn't bother me if he was looking for a job right now. But he could be looking anywhere. The ball, the route, the blocking, the ref, the opposing sideline, his own sideline, one of his coaches, the turf, the sky, whatever. He's only got two eyes. This isn't an excuse. I'm just saying I can understand how he could have missed it, but I cannot understand how no one else on the sideline seemed to notice. Not Nuss, who pats Shane on the head on his way out. Not trainer Paul Schmidt. No one. This isn't me passing the blame -- Hoke gets all the blame for not having anyone on the team prepared for that. He's the head man! Like I said, disaster.

Why not just put a cardboard cutout up there of Hoke with the same 3 or 4 phrases repeated.

What's the point of a press conference if you have NOTHING to say.

Has anyone considered the potential recruiting issues surrounding a head coach who seems completely out of touch with what's going on?

No one will want to play for a coach who can't coordinate effectively and who doesn't seem to care about player safety.
