After a finish like that, what do you tell your guys in the locker room?

“They played their guts out. Played winning football. Overcame so much, and we messed up a play at the end. Have resolve, put steel in the spine, and we’ll move forward.”

Given the fact that your team played so well until the end, is this something that you can use as…I don’t want to say motivation, because that’s the wrong word, but something you can use as a good building point?

“Yeah. There’s so many- so much good, you know. Our guys played big in a big game…overcame so much- calls that were made, calls that weren’t made. Just kept fighting and overcame so much in the ball game and ultimately played winning football. What do you say about the last play? It was unfortunate. Didn’t get the result.”

Why was this the game for Jabrill to see the field offensively and how do you think he did in terms of impacting in all three facets today.

“He did good. He did great in all phases. Big time player, plays really big in the game as he does so often. He played great.”

As you said, you guys played winning football minus one last play that could have gone any way. You guys were in control most of the game- led or tied. How do you talk to your players about the fact that it’s a process, it’s more than one game, it’s even more than one season [as] it’s about building a program?

“Have resolve. Have steel in our spine. Gotta move forward.”

What happened on that last play?

“The snap was low, just below the knees. He didn’t field it cleanly, and looked like then he bobbled it again and kind of kicked it a little bit. Looked like he was trying to kick it while he was in traffic. I mean, you saw it. That about the way you saw it? Very unfortunate.”

[After THE JUMP: “We’re gonna put steel in our spine.”]

Did you get an explanation on the Bolden ejection?

“Uh, no. Tried to explain to them that Bolden was pushed in the back. That really should have been a push in the back penalty. His explanation was that the review people saw it the same way, so….hard to fathom.

“And the quarterback wasn’t even down on the ground. He was straight up and tried to drop like a sack of potatoes. That’s just one. That’s one of many.”

What was the reaction of the team immediately after the game? Stunned?

“Steel. We’re gonna put steel in our spine.”

Just the resolve of the defense to be able to get off the field at the end there.

“Yeah, I mean, it was, uh…multiple times. Even the time where we stopped them on fourth down and they called a personal foul penalty, which I tell our guys, their back is not stopping. He is, on two or three occasions, got push from the offensive line [and] picked up five, seven more yards. We had to stop the back. Didn’t agree with that one.

“Then I thought for sure I saw a facemask on Jake Rudock when the ball got deflected back to him, but it was…yeah. They just kept fighting. They just kept fighting and fighting through things, which you’re so proud of as a coach.

“Our guys fought their hearts out, and we’ll come back and we’ll build and we’ll steel ourselves against it. So, there’s a lot of fight in our guys so really proud of that. Played winning football and overcame a lot.”

You haven’t matched up a cornerback on a specific wide receiver very much at all this year, but it seemed like that was the plan with Jourdan on Aaron Burbridge. What did you see out of that matchup today?

“It was a battle. They won some, we won some. But two great players going at it, that’s what I saw.”

How would you rate your team defense after coming off the three straight shutouts? Going up against Michigan State, little bit of a different atmosphere, different turnout. Overall, how would you rate your defense?

“It was…they played good enough to win. Played winning football and fought hard and so many times when they had to- I mean, seven straight downs on the one exchange, got them stopped. Did so many good things. And both teams played extremely hard in the game. It was close, hard fought like you’d expect. I was really proud of the way our team played.”

You mentioned how hard your team fought but didn’t get the result. Irregardless of the loss, with the way you played the first 59 minutes how much tougher is it to be 5-2 versus 6-1?

“It’s a difference of a game. Yeah, I mean, what else is there to say. Played good, fought hard, and didn’t get the result today.”

You said one of many earlier. I’m assuming you weren’t happy with the officiating in total, or was it just a handful of things?

“Yeah, you could say that.”

Did Blake [O’Neill] tell you how that play evolved, how it broke down, and what his confusion was at the time?

“Yeah, I talked to him. He said after he bobbled it a little he still thought he could get the ball kicked. It was a mistake. A mistake was made. Mistakes were made. Mistakes were made not fielding it cleanly, and then once he bobbled it a few times he should have just fell on it so…mistakes were made. Very unfortunate circumstances.”

Just talk about Kenny Allen performing under pressure.

“Yeah, so good. Just stood up there and put the ball through the uprights on a windy, blustery day. It was impressive. The last one there to give us a two-score lead…just an outstanding game by Kenny Allen.”

During the last play, did you have any other options besides punting and did you talk to your center and your punter about, hey, if there is a botched play fall on it? What was said in the conversation, and again, did you have another option?

“Yeah, the options were to go for it- I mean, if you go for it you leave them a hail mary opportunity. Could protect up and throw a long pass; probably still though, it’s going to eat up seven seconds so they would have the hail mary opportunity. So, ran through those scenarios and felt like the best decision was to punt it and told them to catch it and punt it. They didn’t have anybody back. When they lined up to the punt they didn’t have any returners. Just a matter of catching it and punting it, and we messed it up.”

When Michigan State got some momentum your defense made some stops and Willie Henry picked up some sacks. Talk about what they showed there.

“Just every guy that was out there competing, fighting hard, playing good, sound defense. Competing like the dickens. It was exciting to watch.”

Have you ever been in a finish like this in a game?

“Not one exactly like this, no.”

How does it affect you? You talked about the players will rebound. How do you address the team right after a game like this?

“I talked about that earlier, how we addressed the team.”

How does it affect you when you’re this close to beating Michigan State?

“Yeah, well, just as you said, everybody played really well. Played winning football. Competed like maniacs. You know, both teams did. It was a heck of a football game. Played winning football and didn’t get the result. I mean, welcome to football. Now move forward.”

Why do you say that? I under stand there was an uncovered gunner that could have come in to block, but did you watch the play develop? They designed to roll right and blocked it well. There was no chance of a block if the ball was caught by O'Neill. Just seems like venting. There's nothing threatening about MSU's rush.

the play was blocked well enough that there would not have been any problem if O'Neil has just handled the snap in a better way (and not even in a perfect way),  Still think O'Neil os weapon as a punter.  But the problem was not mostly the result of the formation, but of the mishandled snap and then failure to just fall on the ball.

I wish people would stop second guessing the fucking punt formation.  The fact is that the snap was a bit less than ideal and our punter dropped the ball, panicked and made it worse by trying to kick it.  If he catches it clean and punts it no one gives a damn about the fucking punt formation.  There are way more things to second guess, but the bottom line is we were a one in a million play away from winning with all the complaints added up, which is way further than we have been in a long time.

I agree. The formation may have not been perfect but the play just wasn't executed, plain and simple. Maybe they should have had a different formation, maybe Kenny Allen should have punted, trust me, Coach is second guessing himself and beating himself up too. It's over, move forward.

I get the fact that the play wasn't executed properly, but it wasn't the optimal formation to reduce the risk of the punt being botched. At minimum we should have taken a delay of game penalty as soon as we saw their formation and decided to punt. Was at the game and personally felt we should have gone for it. Saw the percentages that others mentioned but I think we should have ran the ball if we weren't going to take the delay.

A bad snap and/or dropped snap, not to mention a blocked kick, in that situation was something we absolutely should have been prepared for; we were not.

We had at least one UM player who literally did nothing on the play -- didn't block, far too removed from the play to make a tackle -- the gunner at the top of the screen. He should have been the "safety" to help clean things up on the chance the punt is dropped/blocked. He may not have been able to line up behind Blake, but he should have been running back to "cover" the snap ; there was no point in covering the punt returner -- that person didn't exist. Additionally, it looks like the UM blockers were focused on getting down the field -- for what purpose?

In that situation, it's up to the coaches to prepare for the most likely bad scenario when there is no one back from the receiving team. It's the coaches job to have the team ready for the "what if" situation.

If O'Neill had fielded the snap cleanly he would have had a very difficult time getting off the kick.  MSU had seven or eight players running into the backfield and our "wall" was the usual three.  He certainly had no chance at punting it at his normal pace (a few steps to the right and kick).  After his usual steps they would have been all over him.  If Brian can bear to UFR this game I think our RPS score for that play will be severely negative.  They came all out for a punt block.  We didn't have sufficient protection.  And when it went to hell, we only had three guys versus their six headed toward the endzone.  One of our three was Ben Braden, who gets points for hustle but he was miscast as a pursuit man.

It was a team failure.

I must admit, if a game ended in that manner, I would not be able to maintain such composure if asked a basic question about the game, let alone a presser. Add in the absurd officiating and I'm shocked Harbaugh isn't biting off the heads of the media

Great leader, great responses. This team is going to be fine. This loss hurt bad because the hype for this team was built up so high, and for this loss to come against a rival on top of that was tough. It's harder on the players than it is the fans. Stand behind the players and coaches.

The direction this team is going in is the right direction. That is a heck of a lot more than you can say for the last two coaches tenure.

Harbaugh's presser. I wish I could have been in the locker room last night to hear him address the team. While I think we may come out a little flat against Minnesota to start the game, because there will be so much raw, nervous energy to come out after a game like last night, we will bounce back and run the table until our last game, which should be a helluva game. I do agree our passing game, if it were more of a threat, could be the difference in a 2 loss or 0 loss record, but things are the way they are right now and nothing we say on this board will change that of course. At this point I'm just sad we have to wait two weeks to see our boys take the field again. Go Blue!

I know the receivers weren't getting tons of separation and it's difficult to sustain pass-pro againsts their rush, but i can't help with feeling like we missed our chance to blow it open by not being able to hit the long ball.  It was there multiple times and it was either poorly thrown or not even attempted. I guess that's the low-ceiling part of Rudock as our QB this year. Very unfortunate, we won that game yet found a way to lose.

Harbaugh is the reason why this loss is not that tough. He will make this team better. I am expecting a heck of a game against OSU. He will find a good QB and run the table next year.

B1G will be sorry about this game for years to come.

Definitely don't condone the death threats, but the officiating was sooooo bad.  I haven't seen such blatant onesidedness since Ok St Texas earlier this year.  What is the point of replay, if they can't get it right.  Since Antonio Bass had a fumble against Iowa years back, the replay officials have been awful.  I don't know what the qualifications are to be one, but man, they always get stuff wrong.  I did love that Harbaugh blasted them in the presser.

In 1987 Huron High won their homecoming game after they blocked a short game-winning field goal attempt and ran it back for a game-winning touchdown. It was the only time I went back for homecoming and it's the only ending I can remember seeing that's anything like this.

And for us M fans in Seattle, well, it's the second time this year we've found ourselves staring at the TV in utter disbelief as our football team lost a game that they would win 99 out of 100 times.

Talking about it after the game last night I couldn't decide if losing was the worst thing, or having to put up with another year of Sparty fans who, in general, seem to be among the poorest winners I regularly experience.

I also think punting was the right call- you can't call a play because you expect to screw up a punt. Of course getting a first down would have sealed the game. And that, I think, point to our primary issue: Our offense is just not there. I don't know what the heck is going on with Rudock, but he just cannot hit open receivers more than about ten yards away with any consistency.

Ugh.

The "gift-6" mistake Michigan made yesterday is one of the biggest, most widely televised mistakes ever made in college football.  It's up there with failing to knock down the Hail Mary vs. Colorado in 1994, fumbling in 2000 vs. Northwestern, and allowing a field goal atempt to get blocked in 2007 vs. App State.

No way to immunize human beings from our propensity to make mistakes.

Hopefully O'Neill can put this one behind him before close of business today because Michigan needs him to come to work tomorrow with a clear head.

Every fan of Michigan was of course upset.  Low snap ... bobbled .... oh crap ..... panic sets in and poof things happen in the blink of an eye.  Football can be a crazy game .... I mean how many crazy finishes have there even been from college and pro?  I just wonder if this isn't just the exact thing we needed to awake the monster.  Odd to say .. but with how JH handles things as a coach, I really feel this maybe the thing that will awaken it.  I would be so furious at the result of that ending,as a player,  I just would want crush my next opponent(s). I certainly would not be mad at my teammate for that last play. I personally just wouldn't.  That guy has been an awesome punter this year.  Do that same play another 20 times and my bet not one hiccup.  Fluke. Crazy.  It happens just when you think it won't.

Next ..... I honestly hope we stomp Minnesota into the ground.  I hope the team is so angry they use that to their advantage the rest of the season and just run the table. Again .... new coaches ..... the team is still playing with 100% effort. I think we all expected a 3 or 4 loss season but we have all been really surprised and over the moon happy with how things have been going.  This is a bump in the road in my mind.  We should of won the game ... but ... it's why we watch the game.  You just never know when or what.  For me ... makes it fun.  Angry as hell sometimes but fun.  5 years from now  .... man .. you remember that crazy finish ..... etc.  Rolls reversed, no one here would be complaining.  Least not me.

This is one of the first years in over 10 years that I really have been looking forward to EVERY Saturday to watch.  I mean Saturday just can't get here fast enough.  GO BLUE!

And then there are all the times his excellent punts have put our defense in a great position to shut down our opponents deep in their own terrritory. If he's a dumbshit, then I'd say from reading this that he's not alone.

Harbaugh is amazing. All the more reason why the future is bright. A coach who sees the positive in all and stands behind his players in their darkest moments. I can see why athletes will continue to come to Michigan as long as he is the coach.

I had a loss pretty similar to this my freshman year of college. I cried 3 days straight, no lie. I remember my father driving up, not to console me but to make me better. He started the steel in my spine and then the coaches refined it. Are team want on to win are conference. The way that this team responds to this will show just who they really are.

Hopefully the opportunities from this loss are maximized.

1. Punting is passive. The mindset should have been, 'get a first down to seal the game'. Own it. Win with the foot on the gas. When given a choice, choose to take the victory with aggression. Not extend the suspense. Lesson for the coaches. Storm the beach, Burn the ships.

2. Something is wrong with Jake Rudock's depth perception. He either needs an eye exam/glasses or a new prescription for his contacts (if he wears them). The inexplicable inability to hit a post route receiver in stride is too consistent to be purely mental (one would think). Michigan State's weakness was over the top. Everybody in the nation knew this. Our inability to attack effectively over the top will bring eight and ten man boxes going forward until Rudock proves to be a major college passer.

When your punter can get you 80 yard punts and your defense is lights out. Remember 1997? Carr used to give the opponent the ball back at the end of the game regularly because the D was so damn good. It's the same thing here. Harbaugh made the right call to punt yesterday.

bklein09

October 18th, 2015 at 5:34 PM ^

Punting is absolutely 100% the right strategy IMO. If you don't get the first down to seal the game, all you have to do is punt and cover and it's all over. We have punted how many times this season without an issue? The only thing I would say is that we were out of timeouts, so we should have taken a delay of game when we saw that they had all 11 coming after the kick.

If we had gone for it on fourth down and been stuffed, they would have had 5 or so seconds from mid field. If they had completed a Hail Mary people would have lost their minds even more than they already did because everyone would be wondering why we didn't punt.

At least MSU is back to winning games by luck, strange circumstances, or controversy.

That's how it used to be: Michigan winning most of the games with Spartan victories coming amid fortunate bounces and one in a million incidents. So far, in 6 games, Harbaugh and his staff coached these players (recruited under another coach and a mediocre, emergency quarterback) to come within 10 seconds of a win over a team that had outscored them 64-17 in the last 2 games.

I expect a Harbaugh-led Michigan program to fully restore the rivalry by winning 2 of the next 3 at a minimum.

Ghost of Fritz…

October 18th, 2015 at 10:38 PM ^

they have the next Conner Cook on their roster.

Cook hit a lot of impressive throws in the 4th quarter.  Did the same to get the win against Rutgers.  As others have said, with an MSU QB that is 90% as good as Cook, that would have been an easy M victory.

And with a QB for M that is a more ideal fit for what Harbaugh is trying to do on offense, it also would have been a 2 TD victory for Michigan.

Dantonio won;t get another Cook.  And Harbaugh's offense will be much better from 2016 forward.  M will win 75% of the time against MSU in the next several years.
