[Upchurch]

It’s a hard game to put in words. What are your impressions of what happened tonight?

“Too many turnovers. We got momentum going, then we turned it over. You can’t expect to win when you turn it over five times.”

Replacing Nolan [Ulizio] with Juwann [Bushell-Beatty]: what went into that and how long were you guys planning on leaving Nolan in there before switching him out at that right tackle spot?

“It wasn’t a plan. Coaches decided to make the switch.”

How far along was it?

“At what point? I can’t remember exactly what point it was in the game.”

There was a stretch there with the three interceptions and you guys throwing the ball around. Did you consider running the ball more and what went into the playcalling during that stretch?

“Yeah, I mean, you can criticize that. We were trying to run the ball. We were trying to piece drives together. We really were. That was—we needed to score points and we needed to piece drives together and that’s what we were trying to do.”

There was a lot that went wrong on offense tonight but what can you hang your hat on the most in this game? What made you most proud of the offense even through all the faults tonight?

“Just not enough good things. There were good things. Opening drive was good; sixteen plays. We get the ball back, we started to do it again then three plays then we had a fumble. That two-minute drive before the half, that was materializing and looked like we would get points and we stopped ourselves there.

“Then we had the interception. It was hard to tell from where I was standing whether John was throwing the crossing route. Think he was expecting the receiver, Kekoa, to keep coming on the move. It was one of those things, weren’t on the same page there. I think the one ball, to your points, didn’t have a good grip on it. Overthrew the receiver. But yeah, there was good things. Not enough good things. Stopped ourselves. In the course of piecing drives together we turned the ball over. That’s what I saw.”

[Hit THE JUMP for more]

After a game like this with the way the offense struggled, do you take a hard look and reevaluate some things on offense or do you look at it as a bizarre game, a rain game, and you don’t think you need many changes?

“We’ll evaluate, like we always do after every game. Always take a hard look after every single game.”

You’re 1-4 against the two biggest rivals. What should be the reaction midway through year three?

“I don’t know, Dennis. We’re bowing our heads getting ready for the next game. That’s our reaction.”

Can you talk about the defense in the second half especially and what they did to keep you in it?

“Yeah, they were getting stops and even with the five turnovers they did well. The one we fumbled at midfield, they did score a touchdown on that but I think that’s the only points that came off of those turnovers. That was outstanding. Kept us in the ballgame.”

Offensively, has it been a situation where it’s not one thing in particular? Seems like it’s a bunch of little things. Is it just a case of you’re not getting 11-man football out there or is there something underlying as to why it’s not consistent?

“Best I can tell you right now is what I’ve already said. Turned the ball over too many times offensively.”

Despite the turnovers, do you feel like there’s maybe one or two plays or anything that you left out there that could change the outcome of the game despite the rain?

“Yeah, yeah. We had our opportunities.”

If we lose another game we could see more young guys playing especially on the OL. I am sure the plan was that the offense would be good enough and generate enough "garbage time" to bring along the youth but that doesn't look likely this year. So with another loss, some big changes might occur. Next year is now only 7 games away and we are building no quality OL depth for next year. Ulizio and JBB don't look like the long term solution at RT and we have no clear LT successor. We need to develop OTs for 2018. I thought the run blocking was OK, but pass pro was not improved. Hoke left us with a bunch of OK interior guys but no true tackles - good OTs take like 2-3 years to develop both mentally and physically. This issue is going to linger for a while unless two of Stueber, Filiaga, Honigford, Hall, Hudson can become quality starters in their second years ... Newsome coming back fully recovered to his prior form would be a miracle (which I am praying for - such a great kid).

That's what my post about calling out their collective "heart" was about.

Every swinging dick on that O possesses the ability to play football at a high D1 level and so do the next 3 dicks behind them in depth. They would not BE there if they didn't.

This comes down to who is going to take a no excuses attitude and play every play like their fucking hair is on FIRE!! If that guy is a freshman walk on then so be it.

Obviously the D and Don Brown have this mentality already and it shows. No excuses boys. Get it done or get out of the way.

Offense couldn’t do shit there and can’t expect them to change over night. And Florida blows soo. I changed to this mindset yet I didn’t think we would lose this game. Feels like a 9-3 season and getting these young bucks ready for 18. And I am ready for a JH qb. Over seeing putrid qb play. I do see us beating osu for some stupid reason. But it feels like a whacky season and that ending would be fitting.

This offense is as bad as the '14 offense.

It really is that bad.

It's completely inept and is very frustrating to watch.

This was one of the worst games I've ever attended.

There was literally almost nothing to cheer about.   No big plays on offense.   Heck, no big plays on defense - no sacks and only a couple of TFL's for nominal loss in yardage.

Jim Harbaugh is a good footballl coach overall, but he is only an average in game coach. He has been routinely outcoached in big games going back to his days with the 9ers

can become a crushing weight. Drevno and Hamilton have to go. Time to get Fisch back or find the Brown of OC's. Jay should be back out to TE's. Go Blue! I'm almost positive the fan base knew this year was going to be a 3 loss season with a possible let down somewhere else. I'm still here and sticking with this team.

Three loss? We could lose 5. IU is no gimme, Wisconsin, psu, and ohio. Then go lose in a garbage bowl? Why is this an issue of sticking with the team like it’s some kind of litmus test? Apart from the FL game we haven’t looked great with the exception of some good defense play against largely mediocre teams. The o has been abysmal in every facet, play calling is atrocious, and there is little incremental improvement week to week. Sorry, bu this is the truth.

if you don't want to stick with the team then don't.  No one is forcing you.  Not sure what the hell you want really.  CFB has evolved into a very NFL business model and we are never going back to the days of Big Two and Little Eight.  You are correct to call out the playcalling from last night, and if you want to become a sparty fan go right ahead.  I'm not sure why it bothers you so much if others choose differently.  Last year sparties were calling for Dantonio to be fired and he's the best thing that ever happened to them.   They are loving him after last night.  When they get owned by PSU and OSU they'll hate him again.

To correct you, most spartan fans I know weren't calling for Dantonio to be fired, but rather his OC and DC.  They were frustrated with the in game play calling and wanted to shake up the staff.  They know Dantonio is their Bo and trust him.  Now if this season was another 3 or 4 win season maybe then they'd start to question him.

Watching coach Hanlin and Muranski walking on the field last night as honorary captains, they must have been saying after the game wtf has happened to this place. 1-2 against sParty and 0-3 against ohio. A bunch of cream puff wins. Not good.

Just BS.  Stop blaming the right side of the line for every ill on Offense.

Fact is when this team is pulling Guards and Tackles and using them on the move, they block well.

When you ask them to line up and dive block, not so good.

They are tall and light in the pants barely average 295 lbs all playing 6"5 or taller.

Go to Bama and 6"5 OL are playing 310 ++.

So this is a function of Coaching, S&T and Play calling ... they all have inter play with each other.

So I consider this a Coaching failure to use the OL you got to do what they can ... not force them to do what they can't

I'll just say it, this press conference looked alot like some of the final ones he did in SF.  He knows that he is no longer "god" to the fanbase.

I just hope he figures it out. Having your son on staff is fun, but is it the best decision for the program?

Dantonio took a lot of heat for not making staff changes after 2016, but it is looking more and more like 2016 was the result of a bad locker room dynamic not anything to do with the coaching.   Get rid of some rapists, and some racists and your locker room is going to come together.  They are just as young as we are and looked as good as us if not better, especially in the first half.

Here’s my problem. It’s not that we had an inexperienced punter get a blocked punt in the last second like two years ago. I’lll deal with any last second loss or those we’re in the game. No we got the reach around by a bunch of we’ll coached scrubs and walk ons. 1-2 against sParty and 0-3 against ohio. No steady improvement over the course of the season as a team (not talking individual players like Rudock). Serious issues.

He's the JarJar Binks of coaches.

Everyone knows him.

Always in front of the camera, no idea why.

Zero actual accomplishments.

you were listening to Brian and mocking Franklin for being such a bad coach.

but under far worse circumstances, he's already delivered a Big 10 championship and is on course to do it again.

michigan probably finishes 4th in the big 10 east this year.

you're the troll or just dumb.

I'm not sure how many of these posts are just trolls, however the folks that are calling for harbaugh's head are complete, fucking tools. Take a deep breathe and take an honest assessment of the kids on the field and where our program was three - ten years ago.

I am heartened that there are a number of Alabama fans that want Saban fired every time they lose a game. So, I guess this silliness of asking to fire one of the best coaches out there just comes with the territory.

Esterhaus

October 8th, 2017 at 3:05 PM ^

On which Harbaugh head is being called for. Certainly not Jim's head. But there's another Harbaugh on staff and I am calling for his reassignment to another position else firing. That Harbaugh appears to be a less-than-adequate running back coach adjudging from the talent available and the results achieved.

BrewCityBlue

October 8th, 2017 at 10:39 PM ^

a bunch of this lately and I dont get it. Everyone is basically agreed that we have OL issues. So all other positions really cant be judged until that is solved. If we are over matched in trenches no one else has a shot for success.

4910

October 8th, 2017 at 3:06 PM ^

The best you can say about Harbaugh is that he's the 4th best coach in the Big 10 East. That's not being a troll, that's not being a tool.

Michigan deserves better than the 4th best coach in the Big 10 East and shit, Harbaugh may not be better than 5th best.

I know, I know. Just wait till year 4!

You're the fucking troll.

And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. We can't keep playing the what if game. Bottom line is Michigan has not finished better than third in their division the last couple seasons (not looking good this season). Harbaugh may be a better coach than Franklin but I mean I don't know Franklin does have a big ten championship on his record. Harbaugh does not. So yea it's possible for someone to say that Harbaugh is 4th best in the division concerning coaches...

Honk if Ufer M…

October 8th, 2017 at 10:00 PM ^

Well he's 2-0 against Franklin, including destroying him in his "championship" year. Franklin beat OSU on a lucky fluke play the equivalent of the sparty lucky fluke and then backed into the "championship": because the buckeye refs caused between a 21 & 28 point swing in regulation against us so they could then steal it with one more bad call in double OT.

In other words if both teams had played and coached EXACTLY the same ways they actually did, but we had even merely bad officiating against us instead of criminality in Columbus then WE win the division, and probably the league, but either way no title for Franklin. So with nothing changing other than fairness in officiating, your assessment of coaching quality changes?

If he wins this year in legitimate fashion and you want to use that as a feather in his cap go ahead, but your current argument is fake news.

for not allowing new accounts to post for 3-6 months.

It's always after a loss.  It's almost always from another fanbase.  Sorry Spart but you're going to continue to lose recruits to Michigan.  Enjoy your win - has there ever been another fanbase of sore winners.

Mods, this would clean up a sizeable proportion of the crap troll posts.  We'd still get criticisms, we'd still get dissenting voices and different opinions but at least we wouldn't have the 4910s polluting the site with drivel.

and thanks for confirming you're among the sore winner fanbase.

The offense needs to be stripped down into repping one play and counters off of it, and until the offense is successful at those plays, nothing else should be repped.  I totally understand wanting to gameplan for specific opponents, but we just can't at this point.  Rep power, rep zone, rep whatever, just pick one and run.  I don't care if we look simple for awhile, similar to Iowa or Wisconsin.  At this point you need somewhere to start, and it feels like there are too many cooks in the kitchen.  The offense seemed better against Purdue when Speight went out and they were forced to strip it down.  My know nothing intuition tells me they tried to install too much and could have repped what they did well against Purdue.  Not only does MSU attack Michigan's weakness, they definitely broke tendency and had their players prepared for the attack on their weaknesses.

And a note on the pointless Hoke comparisons:  Harbaugh overachieved out of the gate and we as fans have gotten unreasonable with the expectations.  We lost almost all of our production on both sides of the ball.  The offense was bad all around against MSU, but assuming how much players or coaches "wanted it" is ridiculous.  All of the data on young receivers and linemen pretty much reflects what we're seeing.  The defense will make games against better competition a coin flip and the offense will make games against inferior competition a coin flip until things change.
