Michigan Injury Report for Michigan State Comment Count

Tim

Press Release:

OUT (0% PLAY)

Jones, Mike                        Leg

Toussaint, Fitzgerald       Shoulder

Van Slyke, Jared               Clavicle

Williams, Mike                   Head

Woolfolk, Troy                  Ankle

PROBABLE (75% PLAY)

Ferrara, John                     Hand

Shaw, Mike                        Knee

/press release.

Positives: Shaw will probably play, Brandon Herron is not listed on the injury report at all. Herron's return should allow Craig Roh to return to defensive end, where he's been much more effective.

As for the negatives, it's unfortunate that Fitzgerald Toussaint will miss yet another game, meaning one of Michigan's top options (just a guess, and only when he's healthy, which is never) won't be available.

Everything else is either already known (Jones, Woolfolk, Van Slyke out for the year, Mike Williams probably for that long) or unimportant, as Michigan's newfound depth at offensive line making John Ferrara's return a luxury.

No fing shit.. God damn it.. Seriously this kid being hurt has been the worse fuckin news all year..  Im hoping to god he doesn't turn out to be like Minor..

On the other hand, at least it says his injury is his shoulder, and not both his shoulder and his knee..

You are confusing a medical redshirt (one year that doesn't count against the player's 4 years of eligibility) with a medical hardship scholarship (the player's career is over, but he remains on scholarship until he graduates).  These are not the same thing.

Can someone explain how Herron coming back helps us with the linebackers and putting Roh back on the line? I just checked the UFR of the UConn game where he didn't show up contributing and he wasn't listed for the ND game (injured by then? can't remember.)

Herron is really the best guy on the roster to do the linebacker half of the Deathbacker LB/DE role.  Roh is better suited as a chaser and destroyer of quarterbacks.  Unless I'm mistaken, the plan would be to put Roh on the line in place of Banks/Sagesse, and leaving Herron as the hybrid.

The coaches apparently felt that the Roh as LB/Banks at DE combo was better than the J.B. Fitzgerald at LB/Roh at DE combo.  However, the consensus is that Herron at LB/Roh at DE is better than both.

You might be right, but:

Fitz already redshirted

You can get a MR if you've already redshirted;

played in a game more than 1/3 through the season.

No, it was exactly 1/3 of the way through the season (BGSU--game 4 of 12);

Medical redshirts for a 6th year of eligibility usually require a major injury.

Ah, here's the rub, isn't it. Can you confirm this, or is this just your impression/assumption/belief?

Man, hearing Fitz is out is really bad news.  Is this kid ever going to get healthy, or is he just going to be injured for 4 years?  I hope he can get his physical well-being in order, not just for the sake of the team, but for his own good.

Having Shaw back is great.  Vincent Smith has been OK, but Shaw is much more of a threat in the running game, though both have performed well blocking.

Don't worry, he's not like Minor at all—at least Minor was on the field enough with the ball in his hands to have an MGoBlog term named after him. Sadly, there will be no equivalent of MinorRage for Fitz Toussain't Gonna Ever Be Healthy.

being out really that big of a deal?  I mean it sucks for him, but do we really think he would get any meaningful carries in a game like this even if he was 100%?  He's had two snaps all year, I'm not sure this game would be the time to work him into the gameplan, especially since what we've been doing with Shaw/Smith has been doing just fine.

What about Carvin Johnson being off the injury report for the first time since the UConn game?  Even if he wasn't great in the Indiana game, it seemed like there was a lot of pre-season buzz on him.  His injury @ UConn happened right in front of me and I didn't think we'd see him again this year.

I'm thrilled to see him off the injury report.  At worst, he provides a much needed breather for the defense.  At best, he grows all year and becomes a key contributor by the end.

Let's stop freaking out about Toussaint.  He's had some bad injury luck, but we're still only half way through his first year of eligibility.  Let's not annoint him perma-injured just yet.

He still might play in half the games this year, and even if he doesn't, he'll have the whole off-season to get healed and he'll have 3 years to play football for us.

If this is still a problem in his junior year, let's comlain.  Until then, injuries happen, man.
