All the guys in "out" are guys we know are out for the year with the exception of Fitzgerald. Meanwhile, it seems like Huyge is likely to get another start at right tackle on Saturday—which fine he's about as good as Dorrestein—and there is an explanation for Stokes's absence for much of the Penn State game.
Martin… well… reports said he sprained his other ankle, so if that's true he's got a better shot at returning effective than if he was suffering a high ankle sprain. But I'm not confident he'll have an impact. We'll see.
I think they'll show up not too bad and get a few needed stops for the offense. I predict Roh goes ape wild with a few sacks (I can dream). If I was RR or GERG I would sit them down and ask them if they like being perceived as the worst defense in the Big Ten and explain to them how Denard, Molk, and the like are all out there working their asses off while injured to wins games and give them some help!
Come on D!
If he gets a shot a DE like TomVH stated he asked the coaches for, I don't think a couple of sacks are that far out of the question. We will see how effective he can be and maybe we'll use more of a four man front so that we don't have to switch up positions too much.
Hell, they would be the worst defense in the MAC. It is terrible. I just really hope we go with Thomas Gordon at spur and Roh at defensive end tomorrow. I don't think it matters who is at free safety. Vinopal will be slightly better in coverage and Cam will be slightly better in run support but neither is going to be great. I'm depressed.
The one thing I keep thinking in the back of my head is that this defense was designed to stop spread offenses and so maybe we have a chance in the next two games because they are used to defending Denard. Nothing more than hope though at this point.
I think shaw must keep getting hurt on friday's somehow because he's never on the injury report but doesn't play meaningful minutes anymore.
the same thing with Shaw. These reports are useless. At what point will we accept that Fitz is not playing this year, Shaw is 50%, and Hopkins wont "get more carries this week". Seems like RRod likes to say that Hopkins will get more touches, but he never does.
As for the defense (where our true issues lie), I like to think the worst is behind us with attrition, injuries, bad luck, lack of talent/depth, but I have said that the past 2 years.
I was discouraged when RR put the fumble on Hopkins even though it was a bad exchange.
"Finish Strong"
Call me crazy, but I think the defense is going to be lights out Saturday. Remember when Demens got his chance....Well now it is time for Christian, Talbott, and the other guy to step up and knock the feathers out of those Illini helmets.
You're crazy. Demens is a RS Sophomore.
Maybe not lights out, but I just don't understand why people think there will be a drop off without Floyd. Although he does bring a little experience and maybe some leadership, honestly his experience hasn't been that good and I am looking forward to see if one of these freshman steps up.
I'll take average Floyd over a true freshman who hasn't proven much ( 8 games into the season) and without Martin in there you're just making the secondary cover for even longer. So whether or not the true freshman steps up we probably won't notice because the pass rush will be nonexistent. Im just hoping we win the toss and score early to give ourselves a chance, if not, it's going to be a long game, again.
I agree with this. However, hopefully moving Roh down to the line means a 4-man rush and we can get Black on the other side for a decent pass rush to minimize that time.
Though I don't agree with people who dismiss the 3-3-5 outright (a traditional 3-4 is similar in terms of personnel), have to admit the 4 man line makes me feel better.
4-2-5 seems to put speed on the field, while allowing Roh/RVB/MM/Black to stay down. Demens and Mouton at LB. Leave JK and Gordon at Bandit/Spur and this isn't a nickel pkg. But what do I know?
whatever's simplest at this point
I don't care what formation we are in as long as we are rushing 4 every down. Gerg has shown an inability to dial up a blitz from the 3-3-5, so I'm hoping 4 down linemen is the trick.
I think the most sickening thing is the fact that the 3-3-5 is designed to be able to blitz from anywhere on the field and confuse the offense, however GERG has pretty much done the exact opposite all year. I ran this defense as a HS DC and coming into the year I was more excited than anyone because I know how well it can work (when ran properly). Now all I can do is shake my head.
We have a better record when we defer to the second half. Maybe Denard gets more comfotable when he has a chance to soak up the atmosphere during an opponent's first drive? IDK. This year and last, sometimes it seems the QBs are more tense when playing at home. Whether they say it or not, they know the gravity of the situation, and want a win for the home crowd. Queue the Queen, "Pressure".
"Finish Strong"
When it comes to the injury report this year, you can assume Questionable = Out and Probable = Out. Martin will either not play, or play ineffective limited minutes.
Let's get those floodgates propped open...
Ann Arbor: now the permanent home of the Little Brown Jug
67-22-3 all-time
is there any way toussaint is heading towards a medical redshirt for this year too?
Martin is not actually likely to play at all. I'd assume that's a move to keep Illinois honest, given what our D is like when Martin isn't in.
That's from a source connected with the Defensive staff so it may be pretty reliable.
Then again, that was yesterday, so maybe he's taken a turn for the better today.
a dose of gamma radiation.
Couldn't hurt, could it?
Michigan Resurgent? Michigan Resurgent!
The beatings will continue until the uniforms improve!
If Martin is out there he has an impact even if he isn't 100%. He often draws two offensive linemen. It just sucks seeing him unable to do his spin moves, bull rushes, etc. I used to just watch him b/c it made me happier than watching the D as a whole unit.
"Wasn't that Michigan drive just great. That's like Patton riding into Berlin." ~Bob Ufer
Just score a touchdown every time we touch the ball on offense. As long as we don't miss extra points, we should win every game! Doesn't matter how bad the defense is!
/s, sorta
Hail.
You're either crazy or a genius. Since I think Illinois is going to drop over 50 on us, my guess is the former. I'm pretty sure our only "lights-out-esque" defensive performance this year will end up being the one against UConn.
But there's still a chance we can uncork another 2008-Wisconsin game, too, which is why I'll be cheering anyhow.
If we start to play more agressively up front, I wouldn't be surprised if we win. It's rushing 3 on 3rd and long and letting a young QB as much time as he needs to find the open receiver that is killing us. Make a young QB scramble early and he will make mistakes.
Illinois is a very solid team this year with an explosive offense, which means GERG will not do anything common sensical and the defense will probably look like it has taken steps backward from the PSU game...
Illinois has 3 losses. Two to legitimate teams (OSU and Mizzou) and one to a so-so top-25 team (MSU)....
There isn't much Michigan can hope for other than playing in a loud Big House may rattle Scheelhouse a bit. But, honestly, let's not try to convince ourselves the defense might make a stop or four because they were suposed to make one stop against MSU, and then iowa, and then a walk-on QB. But it ain't been happenin'...
Wherever you go, Go Blue!
Earlier in the season I would have said JT Floyd Injured = Death, but now considering how he played last week, I am still sleeping at night.
All hail Hoke!

Can we agree now our defense is going to suck Saturday? I just don't want to wake up Sunday morning to another string of RR must go since our D sucks post. With another injury, that is to expected.
