Michigan Adds BYU, Arkansas

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced today (Tuesday, Nov. 6) its complete 2015 and 16 football schedules, adding contests with Brigham Young in 2015 and Hawaii, Miami (Ohio) and Ball State in 2016 to its previously-announced games.
U-M also announced a home-and-home series with Arkansas to open the 2018 and 19 seasons.
Everything save Arkansas is a one-off home game. Schedules affected:
2015
Sept. 3 at Utah
Sept. 12 Oregon State
Sept. 19 UNLV
Sept. 26 BYU
2016
Sept. 3 Hawaii
Sept. 10 Miami (Ohio)
Sept. 17 Colorado
Sept. 24 Ball State
2016 is now officially a replay of this season in terms of the attractiveness of the home schedule. Big Ten home games that year are MSU, Northwestern, Illinois, and Iowa. It's also the worst nonconference schedule since before the ND series resumed. Yuck. On the other hand, 2015 is excellent: decent nonconference games against Oregon State and BYU plus Wisconsin/Nebraska/OSU.
Arkansas as a home and home opponent… eh. Hopefully they'll add something else of interest in those years.
UPDATE: hey that guy predicting an Arkansas series was right.

In recent history, Michigan has played BYU, has played Hawaii, has played Utah, has played Colorado, has played Miami (NTM), and has played Ball State. The only new additions are Arkansas and Oregon State and they are average to below-average (?) major conference teams. Until the past few years, Oregon State has been terrible and Arkansas is a middling SEC team. It would have been nice to see a major program show up in the non-conference schedule somewhere a la Alabama and Notre Dame. Instead, we get average. Meh to you, Dave Brandon.

Yes, I would have said "meh" then too. They will never be great. They're a Clemson or Sparty kind of team - they start out great but always crash and burn before its all said and done.

Chris Brown recently said that if he, as a DC, had athletes, he'd scheme like Alabama's D, and if he didn't, he'd scheme like BYU's D. As it happens, BYU does have some good athletes this year, with two guys likely to get drafted in the early rounds.
BYU's HC is also their DC, and he's really good at the latter. The former is debateable. Their OC is extremely young and inexperienced, and has done a pretty terrible job both in scheming and in handling their QBs. You may recall that the 2010 Elite 11 MVP/most highly rated QB that year went to BYU, got put in before he was ready, sucked, and is now sitting out a year after transfering to Kansas.
So by 2015 I imagine that either the offense has been whipped into shape and BYU will be quite formidable, or else the HC/DC has been fired and who knows. Tanner Mangum was a really highly touted QB they pulled in last year, but I think he's going on a mission and will therefore be a rusty redshirt freshman in 2015. They do have a Stanford transfer that played a bit this year but got injured and is now out for the season. He reminds me of Taylor Martinez in being a good runner but a developmental project as a passer. That's probably who Michigan will be facing.
Other than at QB and a couple others here and there, their recruiting has been a lot of 2 and 3 stars of late, so Michigan will have a decided talent advantage. If Borges has things figured out a bit better by then there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

will be like in 2019, their program is going to take a hit over the next couple years with the Patrino thing and I firmly believe TAM and Miss State are on the rise in the SEC West.
Anyone else find it odd we play 4 teams west of the Rockies in 2015?

A trophy awarded to the team with the best record in head to head competition among Utah, Utah State and BYU. Really, I have been waiting since that disaster in 1984 for Michigan to get another shot at the Cougars.

If Uof M went undefeated that year, I could see them being excluded from the BCS title game because of their strength of schedule. I certainly miss the nonconference opponents we had in the 1960s and 1970s.

I wonder who will be on the '14 schedule after Brandon hands Swarbrick that envelope on the field next September essentially telling ND to go fornicate themselves.

Oregon State and Arkansas are interesting... but not GREAT matchups. I know we got throttled by Alabama, but the 3 year buildup of excitement was great... because we thought it would be a high profile game (which is was). I know Brandon can't just choose whomever he wants at will, but I wish the schedules were a bit more compelling. Then again, I'm just glad to watch michigan play WHOEVER!
