You reap what you sow.

Facing a fourth-and-goal down 20 points in the fourth quarter, Mark Dantonio went the James Franklin route and called for a field goal. The football gods did not look kindly upon this act of cowardice; Michael Geiger missed the 34-yard attempt.

Dantonio almost certainly regretted that decision when the Spartans cut it to a two-score game midway through the fourth. Instead of having a shot at a miracle, they ran out of time—a Donnie Corley touchdown catch with a second remaining on the clock only brought the deficit to seven. To keep up appearances, or something like that, Dantonio called for a two-point conversion.

This also backfired, and in spectacular fashion. Jabrill Peppers capped a game worthy of a Heisman contender by returning an MSU fumble 98 yards for two points. The subsequent onside kick that didn't matter bounced harmlessly out of bounds, and Peppers got one final opportunity to display his athleticism when, perhaps as an homage to Braylon Edwards, he backflipped following the victory-formation kneeldown.

While it wasn't the blowout most expected, it wasn't as close as the final score indicates, either. Michigan absorbed MSU's best shot on the opening drive, a 12-play, 75-yard march featuring 11 LJ Scott touches capped by a five-yard TD run. The Wolverines hit back by going 80 yards in eight plays with Eddie McDoom's 20-yard jet sweep setting up a three-yard Jabrill Peppers keeper to even the score. They gained the upper hand on the ensuing possession when Maurice Hurst slashed into the backfield to force Gerald Holmes into the unforgiving grasp of Peppers on a fourth-and-one.

From that point forward, Michigan was in command. Two De'Veon Smith touchdowns—one featuring a delighful smashing of Riley Bullough at the goal line—and a Kenny Allen field goal were the result of the next three Wolverine possessions, and MSU could only muster a field goal in the interim; Smith's second score gave M a 24-10 lead with 33 seconds left in the half, and it seemed safe to assume that would be the halftime score.

Tyler O'Connor had other plans, which quickly went awry. Instead of running out the clock, O'Connor heaved a pass towards RJ Shelton while under heavy duress from Taco Charlton, and Jourdan Lewis got his hands under it for the pick. Michigan got off four plays in 27 seconds; Amara Darboh, who had a career-high 165 yards in his best game as a Wolverine, drew a pass interference in the end zone to set up a chip shot Allen field goal as the half came to a close. Suddenly, it was a three-score game.

The 27-10 halftime margin would hold for the entire third quarter due to the goal-line heroics of the defense. In an otherwise stellar game, Wilton Speight made a significant error to open the second half, failing to see MSU corner Darian Hicks while targeting Karan Higdon on a wheel route. Hicks cut off the throw for an interception, and within two plays the Spartans had a first-and-goal.

Michigan State ran seven plays inside Michigan's ten-yard line on that possession, getting second life when Peppers was hit with a pass interference flag on third down. On play seven, Lewis crashed down on a fourth-down pitch to Scott and upended him in the backfield, ending the drive with authority.

After Kenny Allen struck a 45-yarder true to begin the fourth quarter, MSU went into desperation mode, inserting Damion Terry at quarterback on the ill-fated field goal drive, then switching to Brian Lewerke after a Michigan punt. The offense couldn't quite put the Spartans away, however, and Lewerke had a chance to make it a one-score game on fourth down with a little under two minutes on the clock.

The defensive line got serious heat on Lewerke, however, and Peppers cleaned up with a crushing sack. Michigan wore down some clock before MSU's desultory final drive while Jon Falk brought the Paul Bunyan trophy back to its rightful place in the Wolverine locker room.

Michigan State has lost six in a row. Michigan is 8-0 with one rival in the clear and three games to get through before a potential Big Ten East title game. While it took one year longer than any of us wanted, the in-state rivalry is, at long last, as it should be.

Sparty always puts their entire season on this game. They were just as roided up and angry for this game as I knew they would be. But it was still a nerve racking game to watch. We had a Number of opportunities to put them away but they did their best Michael Myers/Jason/Freddie impression and would not die until the very end. We will have play much better to beat the buckeyes

Agree with your last statement, especially with respect to the defense, but I can't say I ever felt the game was in doubt after the offense exposed MSU's defense early on. There were plenty of goddammit moments, but also things of beauty, like stuffing them seven plays in a row at the goal line. But I never found myself standing outside watching through the doorway like I did during the Wisconsin game.

This was THE game for the Spartans. Win this game, they'll always have something good to remember about this season. Now they have lost and are looking at a bowl less winter and probably facing loses at PSU and most definitely with OSU. Rutgers is probably a win. But let's see how they do against the Illini; if they come out flat and dog it, an upset is possible.

They are staring at the abyss - could be a total tail spin crash!

Jesus--everyone (media and many Sparty fans included) had pre-determined this was going to be an ass-kicking. And for the most part, it was. Can we just be happy that Michigan went on the road with a first-year starting QB and controlled the vast majority of a game against a rival none of them had ever beaten? Dantonio and Sparty HATE Michigan, so they weren't going to roll over at any point. Michigan beat the shit out of all 3 of their QB's in the process. I'm satisfied.

We gave up way too many chunk plays.  IIRC, the vast majority of them went around Taco Charlton's edge.  Taco constantly dives inside or allows himself to be blocked inside, like he just doesn't get it.  For the life of me, I don't understand why Taco is being played ahead of Gary.

I thought MSU played harder for a longer period. That will have to change to beat OSU.

UM gave up 13 points in the 4th. That will not fly later in the season, Big Ten Championship, Playoff, etc.

I think UM wins that game 8 to 9 times out of 10, but the closing, killer instinct did not show. They let Sparty be able to crow and believe they could have won it.

That personal foul penalty against Michigan on MSU's first drive was huge.  It allowed them to continue their drive that ended in a touchdown and gave an offense that has been struggling most of the season confidence.

It was their second drive, which ended on a turnover on downs.  It didn't end up costing us that much.

That call was irritating though.  Yes, Hill should have stopped when the whistle blew, but the MSU guy punched him in the head and somehow got off Scot-free.  It should have been offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties.

was even more garbage.  Wormly clearly held back and barely touched the guy - and all of a sudden we are looking at a targeting ejection?  At least they didn't do a Bolden Part II, but the roughing the passer call was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yes, the refs didn't make us miss a tackle here and there, still at the end of the game, the D did their job and prevented MSU from getting on the scoreboard.

Nice job Ace. But please, next time on the podcast when Brian says "where are their points going to come from?" anytime someone suggests our upcoming opponent might score points, could you punch him in the face or something?

I sincerely hope whoever kidnapped Jim Harbaugh at halftime and replaced him with Lloyd Carr in a Jim Harbaugh Halloween outfit returns him in time for Ohio State, because there's no way our beloved coach could have produced that abortion in the second half if he were actually there.

7:00 in the 1st to 7:00 in the 3rd, we played arguably our best ball.  Offense was incredibly efficient and effective, defense was bending a bit but then coming up clutch time after time to end drives with 0 points.  We're going to need to play like that for 60 minutes to get to where we want to go this year... but damn a win against those guys feels good.

In the end this game was typical of so many trips to Spartan Stadium over the years.  Sparty came out jacked up and grabbed an early lead before Michigan slowly gained control of the game and started to pull away and had Sparty nearly down for the count . . . when MSU got a key turnover in the 2nd half.  (Somehow that always happens.)  MSU then benefitted from some fluky crap to make it a one-score game at the end, but Michigan comes away with the win.

MSU is a team full of weirdness - sometimes it helps them sometimes it hurts them.

But as a barometer of Harbaugh and his staff - note:

1. He beat a tough opponent away in a hostile environment. This was not Rutgers.

2. He did so despite having a new DC - MSU this year was beset by many issues but clearly do miss Narduzzi.

3. Sparty hung around hoping for a Halloween nightmare finish but it was just a fantasy.

good second half. Still, we got a 9 point victory over  a rival on the road and go to 8-0.

The team should learn a lot from this game and be able to build on it. This will help us down the road.

Michigan played a Lloyd-sequel, passive, clock-burning 4th quarter that ultimately let Sparty make the final score look close (not THAT close, remember they only had 1 second on the clock where they were within a score the entire half).

But you know what? Michigan EARNED the right to play conservative, a little sloppy, and still win, by dominating Sparty for the preceding 2.5 quarters. Everyone seems to be forgetting that part.

This game went exactly as I predicted all week when post after post went up claiming how we were going to win by a bazillion points or more. I've watched MSU against us for almost 40 years and in almost EVERY game they play their "A" game against Michigan. Apparently a LOT of people here didn't know that-now they hopefully do.

Glad we won.

A huge assist to the coaching staff for turtling in the second half. It didn't go according to plan in the first half, when Michigan State failed to prevent us from scoring on any one of our five drives. Only when we surrendered the notion of a diverse offense after an interception did we give Michigan State a chance to make a game of this. I'm happy for the win, but, with all the Michigan State Spartans in my family, they're celebrating as if they won. We had a chance to put a stake in them, and the coaching staff decided to try to run out the clock starting late in the third quarter. Baffling.
