I've had trouble using the new version of the app. Many times I'll select a topic on the front page or the board and it will not load and the app will just close. I have better luck just going to my browser on my iPhone 7 and just going to mgoblog.com.

If the developer is willing to open source it or send me his code from the HD app, I'm happy to give a stab at updating it.  I'm admittly very novice at iPhone coding but I've built a few apps and this one should be pretty straighforward to update!

I switched to the HD app long ago and have never looked back. The old app crashed a lot and sounds like it continues to do so.

To echo a previous poster, creating a mobile-friendly website would likely obviate the need for a separate mobile app.

I posted above comment using the HD app, but went back a bit later and got a message that it is no longer supported. That sounds quite intentional, and if so, kind of sucks.

Add me to the list of people who would gladly contribute $ to MGoBlog for a high-quality app or a mobile-friendly site redesign.

Still kind of stunned by such a sudden, hard line move.

I can't use the official app to post on. Kinda sucks. What's a man to do! Sit on a fucking computer! That's so 5 years ago! Hahaha

MGoBlog should partner up with the Hd app creator, sell the app for $.99 or $1.99 or whatever, and split the proceeds.  Everybody would likely be happy, and it would probably raise as much, or more, revenue than the old app's advertisements did.

I have no trouble whatsoever with MGoBlog on my phone without an app. Everything that's valuable and viewable on my laptop is there on my phone too.

Personal preference I guess.  I prefer using the app to using the browser on my phone.  When it is something with as many stories, threads, comments, etc., it seems better suited for an app.

I don't have good luck with many webpages on my iPhone 5c "inherited" from my daughter when she upgraded her phone and I no longer had a phone from work.

Just downloaded it.  It's interface may have scarred my retinas.

You do realize we would gladly pay a purchase fee for a good app, no?

Hell, I'm not even talking $1.99 -- you would get a steady stream of $4.99 or even $9.99 purchases if it were actually good.

Go Blue! .... sad day.

I mean, does it really matter that for some of us, we only used MGoBlogHD? The official app is terrible and quite frankly....amateur. So, now we are faced with the following choices: A. Use the crappy official app B. Login to the non mobile friendly website C. Get our Michigan news elsewhere Sadly, I'm starting with C and I'll maybe eventually try A again if it gets upgraded significantly or I find that the other sites don't get me sufficient info, but with both MGoBlog options being rather mobile unfriendly, I'm not real motivated to try A or B. Way to think it through guys! Maybe in the future, you could upgrade the official app first. Smh

I'd be fine with that too. I'm just not going to keep burning my eyes trying to read the full site on a phone and the official app is garbage. That tells me $ > than mobile users. So, fine, I'll go elsewhere. I'll miss the site, but I'll get over it.

I'm not one who posts to websites much but I created a username just to weigh in on this topic.  To amplify an earlier comment, it's mind-boggling to think that these guys could be so passionate and committed to the content and mission of the site and care so little for the user experience.  The 'classic' mobile app is an affront to programming, user interface, the university, motherhood and all that is good and right in the world.  It is literally unusable.  That's not hyperbole.  I mean 'literally' in the literal sense.  The website is barely better.  Crashes regularly and features a circa-2005-North-Korean-internet caliber interface.  You seem to believe that the content and community is somehow separate from the overall product.  It's not.  And it's well past time you fixed it.  To continue to ignore the problem is a big fat FU to your users, whether you realize it or not.

I can't even post using the official app. Tried doing it and it doesn't work. Brian, I've been a long time viewer of this site. Like most people. I now do 95% of my web browsing on mobile. Like most of the site viewers, I come here habitually and the reality is, this is going to disrupt my habit and hence cause me to visit the site less. As much as I like the site, it's now a pain in the ass to view. I get that you need the ad revenue and respect it. But discontinuing the Hd app without a suitable replacement implemented is shooting your self in the foot long term. You're going to lose users over this, not so much as a sour grapes thing, but because people don't maintain habits when there are barriers that are erected. My two cents - overhaul your official app. Hell, just have the HD guy develop the official app. Make it like the HD app, but with ads by default, and the option that go ad-free for a fee.

First, they take the app away claiming that it never actually belonged to the site. In a few months, they'll tell us that the app never existed at all. In a few years, we'll all be reading 11 Warriors without even realizing what's happened. Tragic.

Guys, this is ridiculous. Not to pile on, but I'm gone. I'll just stick to twitter and bleacher report for my news. Let me know when you get your head out of your a$$. Don't bother responding, I won't see it.

I have a feeling a lot of people will stop visiting. I understand the reasoning but to have no new plan is ridiculous. They think they're making nothing off of the app but some users use the app exclusively and donate. Some of those users have already said they won't be back, thus they lose the donations. So I understand the revenue part of it, but they clearly don't care about the bigger picture.

MJ14

January 31st, 2017 at 7:26 PM ^

On my phone so can't edit and on top of that Brian specifically said they never saw a dime from it. Which is false, because again people would use the app exclusively and then donate. So they were in fact seeing money from some portion of the viewership that used the app only. I know it's not directly related to using the app that they were gaining revenue, but they were gaining revenue from it. And it would have been fine had they had a better plan in place. But they didn't have a plan at all, it was just to tell people basically too bad just use the old stuff that doesn't work.

Could you guys PLEASE set up an Indiegogo campaign to revamp the website to be mobile friendly and also to update the official app to work properly? That would be amazing. I would donate lots of money to it!

You purposefully did this right before NSD to make people switch over. You need to over haul one of the apps. HD was just fine, should have added advertising. This is ridiculous. Having a very difficult time posting in original app.

And I understand your motivation here. But like maizenbluedevil says, this was not thought through. The HD app is the format people want and expect. Get it back up and running, with ads if you need to. I'll be the first to pay for the add free HD version. I wish you had let people know ahead of time what was coming our way.

Probably would have been worth talking to some of your customers before making such a move. I understand your need to make ad revenue but worst case you could have bought the app or vastly improved the native one. Honestly the user experience has been significantly downgraded here and it's probably going to lead to less page views overall as angry customers will avoid coming on the computer browser as well now. You guys have by far the best content out there but at the end of the day we have seen the best products in the world fail when they try to make rules for the customer. Don't be Blockbuster. P.S. add me to the list who are willing to pay $10 for the HD app or even $2-4/month for an ad free subscription.

I feel like we're about 3 months from brian shutting the site down and opening a flower shop in ypsi. no warning, just one day in April the site 404s and then we see an article in w/e the equivalent is to the old A2 observer about a new flower shop in ypsi
