Kelly has been a winner
Kelly has been a winner everywhere he's been. He made Grand Valley a D-II national champ. He inherited a horrible program (from Mike DeBord, fwiw) at CMU and turned them into MAC champions. He inherited a .500 program at Cincy (from Dantonio) and won the Big East in year two. He supposedly has some personal baggage, but he's clearly a good coach.

Yeah, this guy wins games. CMU and Cinci were perrenial bottom dwellers until he showed up, and very shortly they won their conference. This is tough to do once, but he's done it consistently. He won't be at UC more than a couple more years.

I really believe that Pat Fitzgerald would also be a strong candidate for Notre Dame. He already knows the area for recruiting purposes, and is used to recruiting kids to an academically rigorous school. He's young, and very much a rising star in my opinion. He'd also be pretty cheap, not that that matters when ND is concerned.

but I just don't ever see him leaving Northwestern. I live in Chicago and he is Northwestern's prodigal son. He is very involved in the area and seems destined to stay and build up Northwestern. I see his career path paralleling that of Barry Alvarez, maybe with less Rose Bowls.

I mean I would say that growing up in Orland Park, IL, being one of Northwestern's best players in the last 20 years, and proving to be quite successful as their HC would make him a lock to stay...but the RichRod example does work as a trump here. When it comes down to it, to quote Floyd Mayweather, "Stacks don't lie". And sometimes even guys as invested in a city and school as Fitzgerald is to Evanston and Northwestern can't resist the $.
To your original point, I think ND does need somebody, like Fitzgerald, that is young, enthusiastic, and hard-nosed to shake things up a bit and attract some talent.

Personally i hate UF way more than I hate ND so i prefer to see him leave Gainesville. It'd be sweet to one day see Michigan, ND, and OSU all contending for the national championship someday.
I know that we have to play notre dame but it would be interesting to see the two arguably best spread coaches have a showdown.

One interesting thing about Meyer to ND is there would be a couple of epic games each year. ND vs Michigan once RR has all his players in and the team rolling, and ND vs USC. Those could be 2 potential national championship match ups right there.

Kelly to ND is highly unlikely (thank god). the guy was available after last season if ND wanted him. They decided to stick with Weis, for whatever reason. And the thought of kelly with Weis' recruits is scary.
I don't see Meyer leaving UF at this point for another college job. He has created a monster at UF that he won't be able to recreate at ND. And the recruiting is easier at UF than ND as the travel covers less ground.
There was a lot of talk about Gruden to ND during the Willingham coaching hire. Maybe he's changed his stance, but he was effectively offered the job and passed. It would be interesting to see if he would make the leap now.
And to assume that a good NFL head coach would be successful in college is a overly simplistic. The two skill sets are different.

First of all, Gruden (allegedly) turning down the job 4 years ago is a little different because Jon Gruden actually had a job then. His situation has changed.
Also, I wouldn't say Kelly to ND is unlikely just because it didn't happen this year. They didn't decide to pass on Kelly, they just decided to keep Weis. If Weis is actually gone, Kelly becomes a big candidate.

If Gruden can be as witty and charming in a recruit's living room as he was doing the draft on TV, he can definitely be a great coach at ND.
And they would probably let him hire his brother as a QB coach/OC, too. I only mention this because Jay may have more potential as an OC than Jon, and because Jon needs a strong voice to serve as in interface between him and his QB.

I'm not sure that Jon Gruden has the patience to develop a quarterback at the collegiate level. But I do not want Urban Meyer in South Bend under any circumstances.

I'm not sure what you mean by "patience." He doesn't have a choice. He can't import free agent QBs by the truckload. Sure, guys can transfer in and out, but that's a whole lot more difficult in college than it is in the pros. Whether he has patience or not, the guys on scholarship are all he has to work with.
