Men's Rowing Dominates National Club Championships

Men's lacrosse isn't the only dominant club-varsity sport at Michigan. Sunday, Michigan took home 1st place in the 1st Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, 1st Freshman 8 and 2nd Freshman 8 at the American Collegiate Rowing Association's (ACRA) national championship regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This performance was headlined by the 1st Varsity 8's resounding 7.6 second margin of victory over the top club crews in the country.

Michigan men's crew has been consistently the top club crew in the nation for a while now. Aside from being the unanimous #1 in ACRA's weekly poll the whole season, the team has been consistently featured in the top 20 of all rowing teams, funded varsity squads included, for the past decade or so.

The wins this weekend were somewhat bittersweet as this year, for the first time, Michigan will be denied the opportunity to test their speed against the best of the best in the IRA (national championship) regatta, on the basis of Michigan's club status. Congrats to the crew team and go blue!

Also: if you would like to read more www.row2k.com should have a more in-depth summary on its homepage sometime Monday.

Yes, very cool

Especially with these guys having to pay to play; that is true, isn't it?

Yes

Yes. The entire rowing team has to pay, in some form, dues upwards of around $2,000 per year. There are fundraising methods, but one way or another each rower has to come up with the total dues by the end of the year.

With 5:45AM practices during the fall, these are probably some of the most dedicated athletes on campus.
