McGuffie Rumors

I just got done talking to a source that told me the rumors aren't true about Sam transferring, or wanting to transfer. He told me that he talked about it with McGuffie, and he is homesick, but has no plans of going anywhere. This rumor somehow got traction on a forum, and then snow balled from there. I know of a lot of freshman players that are very open about how homesick they are, it doesn't mean they're going to transfer though. I can't tell you who the source is obviously, but he is very close to the situation.

I think people should be careful about buying into these kinds of rumors. McGuffie was roasted on signing day for not faxing in his letter until evening, everyone assumed he was going to back out and it was not true. Don't jump to conclusions. Who knows, maybe he tweaked one of his injuries the last day of practice and that's why he didn't go this weekend. None of us really know what's going on.

I agree that people should be careful about buying into rumors, but in my experience, where there's smoke, there's (usually) fire.

There WAS reason to be concerned when McGuffie didn't fax in his letter - he was considering committing to Cal. That's a pretty significant reason to be tense. It's not like his fax machine was broken or he got the flu and couldn't send his fax. He said he locked himself in his room all day to try to figure it out.

Yeah, RR said something in the post-game conference about Sam having a problem with one of his knees. Nothing serious.

I give these Michigan Freshmen alot of credit-they have played hard all year. Sam McGuffie is one tough player-if He couldn't go this last game I respect that. I don't know how he got up after many of those hits this year. As fans, we often forget about how hard it must be for these young men to leave their families and friends behind. After this season is over, I'm sure things will settle down for these young players. Michigan has a bright future with guys like McGuffie,Odoms and Martin. Thanks Tom for the update.

One day, somebody will explain the ridiculous level of man love for the McGuffie kid. Great H.S. video and career...YES! Seems like he plays hard and will be a significant contributor over his career...YES. However, so many of you treat him with the same esteem that we give Mike hart after 4 years of being a pure beast. He has shown flashes this season, but after this season, I remain unimpressed. The number of zero and negative yard carries were far too frequent for me to be singing his praises. Many will blame the line play, which is a decent argument. But we did see a more consistent run game after McGuffie got injured. Please don't say the line improved that much over such a short period of time. I don't think I'm being a hater when i say I hope another back proves to be our workhorse in the next few years, and McGuffie turns out to be a home run threat (from multiple positions) with about 7-10 touches a game.

McGuffie has had at least 2 100 yard rushing games, in situations where the entire defense knew that Michigan was going to run (becuase they couldn't throw more than 2 yards downfield). Granted, defenses have been playing the run all year, but the line did improve later in the season.

Minor and Brown can make a 2 yard gain, out of what McGuffie would have a 1 yard loss. When your offense has pretty much a zero downfield threat, a bruiser is what you need. But when the spread starts to work (ie room to run), McGuffie is much quicker, and shiftier, than Brown or Minor.

Can you remember how many losses Barry had for those horrile lions teams? Barry had to contend with a defender on his back the instant he had the ball, but he ended his career as the most electrifiying (and greatest) running back to ever play. If he had played on those Cowboys teams that Emmitt did, he would have had multiple 2,000 yard seasons. When RR get's a qb that defenses have to respect, McGuffie will excel.

That is an excellent, *excellent* comparison of McG to Barry! I've thought about the same thing this season... Peeps are quick to criticize McG for all this 1 yard losses, yet they sing Barry's praises b/c what they remember is not his numerous 1 yard losses, but the many times he broke loose for a 50-60 yard TD.

As the line improves, we get a better QB, and all that, McG will start breaking loose for big gains as well.

Minor and Brown look pretty quick to me. I'd say any advantage the McGuffie has in speed and agility over those two is marginal at best. When the spread starts to work, I'd still prefer to have Minor or Brown in the backfield over McGuffie.

I think we may see McGuffie take over a roll like Reggie Bush has. He can line up as the running back, or in the slot position. It will be basically line him up so he can get into open space and use his speed and shiftiness to pick up yards. Shaw is going to turn into our consistent running back with McGuffie play as a backup running back, or when Shaw is on the field as our slot receiver.

College freshman are homesick. That doesn't mean they are going to transfer. I had friends in college who were really homesick, and since they weren't on the football team, they could have very easily transferred. It's pretty difficult for football players to do this. It takes more than "I miss my parents."
