Okay, many questions in the inbox about the Rodriguez quote like so yesterday:

"We're hoping that he'll be back tonight but we're not sure,'' Rodriguez said. "We're hoping he'll be available.''

"Hoping" a guy on the team is available says much.

This is what I know: Before McGuffie left for Texas he informed coaches he wanted to transfer, at which point word spread through the team. His locker is still there and the door was not closed to a return a la Zion Babb, who was booted for repeated insubordination. Michigan is obviously trying to mend whatever was broken when McGuffie opted out of the Northwestern game. If they can smooth out the blowup, he may stay. I won't offer an opinion on how likely that is; I don't know.

That's good news... Being there and in it with the rest of the boys will do more for him than anything any coaches could ever do. Maybe he still leaves, but I feel better hearing that. Ever going to reveal your connections? (Feel free to say HELL NO)

It was revealed on Signing Day that he really wanted to go to Cal. He loved the area and the head coach. But I read that one reason he didn't go was that his parents were going to come with him, and home prices were much cheaper in Ann Arbor. Are his parents here or in Texas? He seems like a nice kid, but I don't think he really wants to be at Michigan. I don't see him staying unless his parents tell him, like Anthony Carter's mom did, to toughen it out.

A man wouldn't leave his team before the season was over, he would stay and see the thing through until the end. People like to talk about football as a "teaching game", and the biggest lesson you can learn is perseverence. You don't quit, ever. When you commit to a school and a program you also commit to your teammates. Any player worth a shit would stay and complete the season. There is a reason Bo's famous quote hangs over the door to the practice field. "Those who stay will be Champions" means more than championship rings. You also build integrity, character, and the respect of the men you work with and for. If he goes, he goes. Best of luck, he wasn't a Michigan Man.

Please, chill out. We don't really know if Sam is indeed a dickhead quitter or if he's the 2nd Coming of Jesus. We don't know him. Period. My only beef with pfloyd's rant is the part about Sam not being a "Michighan Man." I think we're all a bit weary of that phrase being tossed around so liberally. I do think a little more perseverance (like, how about THREE DAYS more, please?) by this recent slew of kids would be admirable.

"My only beef with pfloyd's rant is the part about Sam not being a "Michighan Man." I think we're all a bit weary of that phrase being tossed around so liberally." This is clearly the part I responded too. Additionally, only Kates publicly left the team. Babb was kicked off, McGuff and Chambers haven't publicly quit.

The "Michigan Man" thing gets lame when used too freely, I admit. Its almost cheesy now, but my point was that guys who transfer out before the end of their first semester won't be missed for long. You don't bail when shit gets rough, you gotta sack-up and be a player. I shouldn't have questioned Sam's man-hood, thats just me being pissed we're losing a great RB. I hope he stays and scores 3 TD's this week and forgets all about leaving A^2.

Saying he isn't a Michigan man and doesn't know the value of commitment is ridiculous. This is an 18 year old kid who suffered a concussion and lost his grandmother in 10 days. For all we know his girlfriend also broke up with him in that time, and that he received no coaching other than "go ride a bike" following his concussion thus feeling abandoned, and he is clinically depressed. There is too much to speculate. What we do know is that he has not violated team rules or broken the law. So if he is unhappy, as someone who has transferred himself (to UM), I encourage him to act on that impulse and NOT wait it out. It's easy to say "be a man and tough it out" but toughing out a difficult work assignment for 6 months is different than staying at that job for 4 years if you dislike it. If he truly feels he can't be happy at Michigan, then the best thing to do is leave as soon as he is able. It's his life. I hope to see him return in a winged helmet, but otherwise, I wish him the best. He is far more capable of making the best decision for himself than us fans, or even the coaches.

That would be ideal. But keep in mind, there have to be some pretty deep emotions to want to transfer out of here. That type of thing typically doesn't wait for a football game. Not to mention, the sooner he tells the coaches, the sooner that they can account for it in recruiting, both by having another scholarship spot and by possibly trying to recruit another back to replace him (not that we really need to).

Your argument seems fine, but I'm asking if could he just wait THREE MORE DAYS? In that context, your reasoning doesn't hold much water. Would it kill him to wait 3 more days and then go seek his greener pasture? I mean, he's a guy who plays a significant role on this team, he's NEEDED out there! His teammates ARE counting on him. He was cleared as healthy and played against Minny, and didn't get hurt since then, so...? Hey, I'm just sayin'. It would be admirable if he could muster up the fortitude to make it through Saturday, then God Bless him and happy trails. I don't think that's being unreasonable. p.s. It was his 98-yr-old great-grandmother who died.

If a player is looking to transfer, he may be looking to enroll in the spring semester at the next school of his choice. There could be various reasons for that, including wanting to join spring practice with the new team (I don’t know if that’s allowed or not) or simply wanting to get on with a fresh start. Sam certainly has some significant homesickness, so the latter may be even truer for him. I don't know if a transferring player has to go through some of the same things that regular students do when enrolling (e.g., choose a school, apply, possibly apply for financial aid given he won't have a scholarship the first year, move, etc.). If so, that’s a heavy load to execute in just over a month. The process is much longer for regular students (at least it was in my case). In Sam's case, if he transfers to a school away from his home in Texas, and wants his family nearby (as he did when coming here), that's an additional load on his family. Given how plans fell through in moving to AA, they may want to take more time to make sure it happens. In any case, last I saw it wasn’t completely clear that he finalized his decision. From what I gather, he informed the coaches that he was considering a transfer, and it leaked out to the media. Neither he nor the coaching staff said officially reported that he was leaving (could be wrong on that). But if he needed time to get his things together to enroll in the spring, I’d think it would be better to inform the coaches of that sooner rather than later, rather than start the process without their knowledge. It would also give the staff time to make any accommodations, if needed (e.g., recruiting). Again, just a thought. I'd like him to stick through the final game as well, but there may be factors in play where it was better to inform the coaches when he did. [Edit: okay, that was a lot longer than I intended]

According to my roommate, a team manager, McGuffie is well-liked. At least enough for Terrance Taylor to chase him around the locker room completely naked. Footbaw!

That is the question...which we will find out soon enough. Sam deserves to be happy and if he's not happy playing for Michigan then he needs to leave and hopefully find another team where he will be happy. There is never a guarantee a kid will actually enjoy being at the school he chooses. Best of luck to him what ever he decides to do. I, of course, hope he stays.

Look, none of us know jack shit about what Sam feels or thinks, why 3 days could matter, his injury status, etc. So lets please grow up and move on with our lives, without needing to spew "those who stay" and "michigan man" rhetoric in every direction. "Those who stay" and "Michigan Man" each mean a hell of a lot to me for my own reasons, so please stop dragging it through the mud everytime you don't like something about recruiting, transfers, coaching, or the way the wind is blowing today.

just assume he needs more time to grieve with his family? That seems to make the most sense in this current situation. Who knows if he was told about the loss at some point prior to the Northwestern game and thus he was unable to play? Oh and rabble, rabble, rabble.

I'm a true Michigan Man that is from the great state of Texas. Being back in the Houston area now, I have a personal connection to Sam and his current situation. He basically has made up his mind to move forward with a transfer to a school closer to home where his talents will be more on par with the competition. The news here is that he'll be enrolling at either TCU or UT for the spring semester and filing a grievance with the NCAA against the Big Blue. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is his choice and I think he's making the right one. With our football program no longer on the map and the situation looking bleaker by the week, it's best for him to be in a place where he can win and utilize his talents to work towards a potential NFL career. Cheers!

The news here is that he'll be enrolling at either TCU or UT for the spring semester and filing a grievance with the NCAA against the Big Blue the Big Blue??? Ummm, when I was there for many years, nobody ever referred to us as Big Blue. With our football program no longer on the map and the situation looking bleaker by the week All this after 1 whole year? He basically has made up his mind to move forward with a transfer to a school closer to home where his talents will be more on par with the competition. The news here is that he'll be enrolling at either TCU or UT Are you saying that TCU or Texas doesn't play Michigan's level of competition? TCU and Texas play the same level of competition, or that competition refers to TCU and Texas, and Michigan is not on either of their levels? Huh???? I'm a true Michigan Man that is from the great state of Texas. You're a true blue Michigan Man, huh? I have to admit, I have never met someone who refers to himself that way.

texasblue

November 20th, 2008 at 5:44 PM ^

If you look closely, I did not refer to myself as a true BLUE Michigan Man. It is a harsh reality that even after just one year of irrelevance in college football, a program can struggle for years (i.e. Miami FL now). The simple facts are that TCU and UT are both elite football schools in today's world and UofM is not. He wants to play with the best against the best. With us he was simply playing against the best (Utah, Penn State and Ohio State). Let's all just move forward without him and try to focus on rebuilding efforts in Ann Arbor.

Even if he's "a true Michigan Man" as claimed, he has it out for RR: "The grievance will entail recruiting violations that occured once Rich Rodriguez was hired." "... but at least it could move us in the direction of finding a new coach with some class and dignity to return our team to national prominence." I suspect he's just trying to throw gas on the fire (as a troll would), and possibly try to create unsubstantiated rumors to further a personal agenda to discredit RR and get him fired.

Blue Durham

November 20th, 2008 at 6:05 PM ^

He besmirches Rich Rodriguez regarding unspecified recruiting violations (then serve them up, Texas not-so-blue). He joined MGoBlog on 2008-11-20, which is, well what do you know - thats today. What a damned coincidence. After one bad year, the winningest program is no longer relevent (oh, but TCU's is, after 1 or two decent years in some conference I don't recall). I definitely smell a troll.

I thought he was a troll right away as well, which is why I didn't respond. It looks like everyone agrees. Plus he just registered today. Texasblue - maybe you can pull a fast one by OSU or MSU fan bases, but we are brighter than your average fan. Thanks for trying.

What about his teammates. Even if he comes back, I wonder how much they will respect him. Look at Minor or Threet. They both play hurt and tired. I'm sure the coaches understand a player getting homesick and wanting to transfer, but if other players didn't feel that way, they might resent him.

MichFan1997

November 20th, 2008 at 5:32 PM ^

between being hurt and injured. Sam had a CONCUSSION. You shouldn't play with one of those. Also, just for the record, you mention Minor who also JUST missed a game last week. Threet has also missed time. Shit happens. Get used to it and get over it.

jeez, one bad year and suddenly Michigan is "no longer on the map"? Fuck off with that bullshit. Michigan is going to be winning a whole bunch in the very near future. And as far as a grievance goes, what would be his reasoning for doing that? He needs to take his lumps, sit out a year, and get on with his life.

texasblue

November 20th, 2008 at 5:15 PM ^

The grievance will entail recruiting violations that occured once Rich Rodriguez was hired. Nothing to do with Lloyd at all, but if found to be true, they could be potentially devestating to not just our football program, but the university as a whole. Trust me, I don't want a black eye of this magnitude on our fine institution's record, but at least it could move us in the direction of finding a new coach with some class and dignity to return our team to national prominence. Please, don't get upset with me...you cannot seriously argue that our season has been relevant on the national level.

One thing that should be remembered about this entire "These kids should wait 3 more days" bile is this: A single player, Jason Kates, has officially announced he is leaving. Sam McGuffie has NOT announced he is leaving. If he is, he is, clearly waiting three more days. Artis Chambers has NOT officially announced he is leaving. If he is, he is clearly waiting three more days. Zion Babb was kicked off the team. Don't conflate the internet getting hold of the gossip as the same as an official announcement. It's not. So, if you want to blame Kates for leaving 3 days before the end of the season, I violently disagree with you, but he, at least, is official. Chambers and McGuffie are, as of now, part of the team. Don't accuse them of abandoning the team 3 days before OSU when they have not, officially, done.

your characterization that M is suddenly a tier below TCU is complete horseshit. This is ONE down year. Chitown makes a good point: only 1 guy has officially bailed before the season is done, Kates. So I'm done harping on the "what ifs". Also, I have NEVER called Sam or any of these guys pussies.

When somebody ostentatiously claims they're a "Michigan Man" I'm reminded of the guy who points to the "Support the Troops" decal on the back of his Expedition as proof that he's more patriotic than you.
