Maryland 23, Michigan 16 Comment Count

Which remarkably apropos moment to use here?

Should it be the innovative "running two-minute drill" that miraculously netted an end-of-half field goal?

How about when the Michigan Marching Band recreated the extinction of the dinosaurs at halftime?

Perhaps Dennis Norfleet's incredible punt return touchdown getting called back?

Could I see the argument for Mike Weber announcing his decommitment the precise moment Maryland's Wes Brown ran in the go-ahead score? Of course.

Same goes for Darryl Stonum's tweets just before and after Devin Funchess dropped another pass, this one to seal the loss on fourth down.

All of them, I guess.

As far as I know, Brady Hoke hasn't been informed he's fired, but he knows. We all do. With bowl eligibility on the line—unless you're holding out hope for a miracle in Columbus—Hoke's squad couldn't get out of its own way.

Even considering a few impressive Devin Gardner scrambles, including Michigan's lone touchdown of the game, the team's best offensive play came on a 52-yard fake punt run by fullback Joe Kerridge; Kerridge couldn't quite get to the goal line, and after Gardner's third-and-goal pass bounced off Freddy Canteen's chest, Matt Wile kicked a field goal.

The game played out in similarly bumbling fashion for most of the duration, with both teams seemingly unable to catch the football. Maryland had three drops in the first half; Gardner recorded a pick when a throw well behind Bo Dever bounced off his hands and into those of Maryland corner Will Likely.

The special teams were a mess. The flag on the punt return, however questionable, cost Michigan a touchdown. Jourdan Lewis roughed Maryland kicker Brad Craddock, leading on the very next play to a CJ Brown touchdown run; there's another four points. Matt Wile missed a 39-yard field goal that would've given M a 19-16 fourth-quarter lead.

It was a Brady Hoke loss, through and through.

It's sad, of course. Devin Gardner mustered 82 yards on the ground, scrambled for a vintage DG touchdown run (above), and put most of his passes on target, only to see several go right through the hands of his intended receivers. He went down fighting in his last home game, and it sucks to see his efforts go unrewarded. Same goes for all the other seniors out there.

For the sake of Michigan football, though, this may have been for the best. There's little, if any, doubt now that Hoke won't be retained, and a loss in The Game—meaning no bowl game—is all but guaranteed. Unless the athletic department royally screws up the coaching search, the next team will have more competence at the top, a better opportunity to succeed. The bowl practices will be missed, but expediting the much-needed rehauling of this program may make up for it—and then some, when recruiting is taken into account.

We'll see how it all unfolds. For now, though, this felt like an all-too-fitting finish for Brady Hoke; whether he's present on the sideline for Ohio State—which I expect he will be—is almost besides the point.

Sorry Gardner apologists. He is great kid, hard worker and will be successful in life. Just not as QB.  Obviously poor coaching is a factor, but he is what he is.

Watch other football games, guys break open and then the ball is delivered on time and accurately.  The receiver then does not break stride and continues for extra yards.

You won't see the very often at M.  Kerridge saved him with a spectacular grab.  The dropped pass to Canteen was to a spot where the receiver stopped. The interception could have been caught by Dever, but was a poor throw to a moving target.  The throw to butt down the middle is tough, butt should have turned quicker, but something tells me it is very hard for receivers to know when Gardner is gonna throw, the timing almost always appears off. Gardner is very limited in throwing.

You seem to forget:

"On October 19, 2013, Gardner broke John Navarre's Michigan single-game record with 503 passing yards. He also broke Denard Robinson's Michigan single-game record with 584 yards of total offense.

As a high school senior, Gardner was rated as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the United States byRivals.com and the No. 5 quarterback by ESPNU."

The guy's got loads of talent and potential that's unfortunately been wasted and undeveloped.

This after they were told that their coach is gone at the end of the season.

Hackett should do the same to Hoke. Announce tomorrow that he will be terminated at the end of the season. Let his kids play their hearts out for him and beat OSU.

but I don't see all the negativity towards Hoke. We're an extremely young team. Hoke has already proven he"s a good coach by taking us to a Sugar Bowl. The team is young and we need to give Hoke time

I know you are a charter (and probably only) member in the Hoke fan club but what makes you think he would ever do better?  In four years we don't have a signature win.  We have gotten appreciably worse every year.  We are so bad, being called inept would be a compliment.  We treat a no huddle offense like its some crazy innovation that no one has ever seen before.  We can't score, can't catch, can't defend.

Don't give me some bullshit on youth.  We have a senior QB who has started for 2 1/2 yrs.  Whats going to happen next year?  Another excuse that he needs another year to have a returning starting QB?  We have six losses and have only played 2, maybe 3, good teams.  THe best team we beat is a 6 loss NW team.

Pretty much the only thing in the "pro" column is he seems like a nice guy.

Hoke went to the Sugar Bowl with Rich Rod's Players. If he had been treated like a Human Being when he was at Michigan they wouldn't be in the mess their in, and don't say he wasn't a Michigan Man, or he doesn't know how to coach he seems to be doing just fine at a place where he's appreciated, and by the way who beat Utah today. The fans wanted a Michigan Man, and you got him now shut up.

And volunteered at church to fill Thanksgiving food baskets for needy families in the area. Maybe I can find another volunteer opportunity next weekend as well.

After over 50 years of watching and enjoying Michigan football my brain is not accepting the current state.  I think most people don't understand how bad the coaching has to be to more than offset all the other advantages this team has.

The best analogy I can think of is a racing team.  Great facilities, great cars, great pit crew......and the driver can still screw it up........but he has to be a pretty BAD driver.

This has to change, but I didn't get all pumped up after the interim AD comments.  Uh-oh.......

I tried to be mad.  That seems like the response I normally have after games like this.  I tried to, but I was not.  I was just sad.  This game seems to typify Hokes tenure here.  A game full of almosts, should haves, and unfulfilled promise.

I feel sad for the seniors.  I really do.  I feel like someone should apologize to them.  They are trying their best, and doing what they are told.  They should be better, and I don’t feel it is their fault.  I hope that someone in the NFL will look at them and see their potential and give them a change to prove themselves.

As for the rest of the team, I hope that who ever replaces Hoke will be just as good of a guy, but will prepare them better for games.  These players deserve it.

It's all become so repetative and exhausting.  Like Groundhog Day, it's just variations of the same game over and over.

UM football needs a full enema.

Truly frightening to me that if the Darboh catch was not screwed up by the refs vs Rutgers, and Norfleet punt return for TD was not called back (both bad calls), and UM won those 2 games we'd be 7-4 headed to OSU and a good portion of people would say that's good enough for another year.

This is not a coach or staff that will beat OSU and MSU repeatedly in the next 10 years if given that.  Wins and losses in a conference with 2-3 legit teams and so many frauds is not a good measure of this team.  So many timeouts had to be callled today just to get the right players on the field, we didnt have any at the end of the 2nd half.  So many of the little things are wrong with this team that some would have been willing to overlook by beating a bunch of Big 10 frauds (who get destroyed by Wiscy, OSU, and MSU) and App State and Miami OH.

Also questionnable call.  You're right it's that close to being 7-4 but what does that say about the talent on this team that wasn't fully developed. Really feeling like crap for these guys especially the seniors.

I have to go with, would have been better to get the correct calls and the wins, because it would not have erased the conclusions that everyone has today.   Brady Hoke is the most decent human being, who we respect...  but who wasn't able to take this team to the level they needed to be.

Someone tell me one reason why Brady shouldn't be fired on Monday Earle Bruce style? It's time. For pity's sake, can't everyone, including Hackett, see that it's just time.
